The Junior Leaders of Kosciusko County are preparing the 4-H Memorial Garden at the fairgrounds in preparation for the re-dedication ceremony in honor of the 20th anniversary of the garden.

Harrison Teachers Nominated For Disney Awards

At 2 a.m.Thursday, Harrison Elementary School teacher Ethel Ringle was buying hot dogs at Wal-Mart. Twelve hours later, she told her third-grade students they would be taste-testing condiments on "worms."The students' reactions were "Ewwwwww!" and "Gross!" The "worms," of course, were the hot dogs Ringle boiled an hour earlier. Ringle's class is reading "How To Eat Fried Worms" and the condiment testing on the "worms" was a way for Ringle to interest her students in the book. Ringle and fellow Harrison Elementary School third-grade teacher Katie Beehler both have been nominated for the Disney Teacher Award for their creativity and success in the classroom.As the next step in the award process, both teachers must submit an application to be considered for the 2006 Disney Teacher of the Year Award.A third Harrison teacher was nominated but chose not to pursue the award further.

WCHS Defines Block Scheduling Options

Monday's work session on block scheduling in Warsaw Community High School garnered lots of input from teachers, parents and students. WCHS is looking at block scheduling as a way to keep up with changes in the world of education.After attending a "re-learning" conference in Nashville a few years ago, a staff team began meeting with faculty to talk about change: "What the school is like, what we want it to become," said Ann Halpin of the school improvement committee. Combining these meetings with faculty visits to schools and administrative attendance at conferences, the group concluded "the best design for a school is a plan everybody feels can work - teachers, administrators, board members and parents," Halpin said.

Warsaw School Board Hears Reports On Architectural Firms

LEESBURG - Reports on architectural firms the Warsaw School Board is considering for a possible building project were given Thursday. No decisions were made.The project has no scope.And only a handful of people were in attendance at Thursday's meeting, most of which were school officials or employees. Superintendent Dr.Robert Haworth reminded the board that according to their strategic plan, they are supposed to have an architectural firm chosen by September. At the end of the 2003-04 school year, Atwood, Silver Lake and Claypool elementary schools were closed.Since then, students at those schools have been transported to other schools, causing overcrowding.The school board has since said Claypool will be reopened, but also are considering renovating and expanding Claypool and building at least one new elementary school.But no decision has been voted on.

County Formulating 2000 Budget

The Kosciusko County Council got down to the serious business of formulating the county's 2000 budget this week. But before they could get down to that item of business, they first had to address some additional budget requests for 1999. County Administrator Ron Robinson requested $991,000 in additional appropriations related to the Justice Building expansion project. Robinson said $400,000, to be taken from the jail fund, is for contractual services on the project for the remainder of 1999; $150,000 from the 911 fund for the purchase of radio equipment; $90,000 for unbudgeted Social Security expenses; $1,000 for paying the members of the prevailing wage committee $75 per meeting; and $350,000 from the Cumulative Jail Fund for renovations on the 911 dispatch system. Council vice president Jim Tranter said he is concerned about the effect the additional appropriations will have on the marketing of the bonds the county is seeking to fund the expansion.

Whitko Cuts Staff To Ease Budget Woes

PIERCETON - What South Whitley Elementary School physical education teacher Tanya Gill wanted to do Thursday was speak to the school board at its public hearing before the board accepted the recommended personnel cuts. But the Whitko Community School Corp.Board of Trustees stayed with its agenda and kept public questions and comments until after the motion to accept the recommendations was unanimously approved. The recommendations by Superintendent Dr.Jeff Hendrix approved by the board included the cancellation of teaching contracts for the 2004-05 school year for: • Ray Davis, high school physical education. • Jennifer Carr, high school physical education. • Bill McIntire, high school social studies. • Steve Miller, middle school industrial technology. • Rhonda Graney, elementary school counselor. The reduction/elimination of extended contract days for the 2004-05 school year include: • Roger Carr, reduced from 60 days to 45 days.

Criteria For Tax Abatements Questioned

Does Kosciusko County need to establish criteria for granting tax abatements? That's the question county councilman Jim Tranter asked at Thursday's council meeting.The concern arose after attorney Steve Snyder asked the council to approve a resolution establishing a public hearing for a tax abatement for his client, Chuck Simons. An abatement is a tax deduction for a specified amount of time, according to the auditor's office.There are several different kinds of abatements with the usual request being for an economic revitalization area abatement. Simons plans to begin a new business at 27 E.CR 250N, south of the Warsaw airport.The new business is a steel process fabrication plant that would supply parts to the trucking industry.The building has been vacant for several years.The requested abatement would be for $400,000 of equipment for steel rolling.
