Can Connor Cover? Saying Goodbye To Football Is As Hard As Ever

Well my friends, we have finally made it. After 18 weeks and enough words and bad opinions to fill a book, we have finally reached the final week of the NFL season. I’ll be by shortly to hand out tissues to wipe away the tears.

Letters to the Editor 06-12-2003

- Shame! Shame! - School Closings - Tax Impact Shame! Shame! Editor, Times-Union: Like Gomer Pyle used to say, "Shame! Shame! Shame!" And to you who dumped a six foot metal ring at the Silver Lake Recycling Center, shame shame, shame. It was standing up before where we put our recyclables and had fresh, wet manure from the barn yard. I am a resident of Silver Lake and appreciate that service.Perhaps it would be a good gesture to come some night after dark and take it back to the farm - like after dark when you left it. It's incidents like that causes disgrace to all. I just hope you reconsider your decision and show some respect to all and remove it.

- Disagrees With Column - Accident Thanks - Responds To Miner - Agrees With Gerard Disagrees With Column Editor, Times-Union: I have had great difficulty appreciating the columns written by David Slone in the past because I often differ with his outlook on things. His column on April 16, "I Won't Vote For Souder" was, in my opinion, his worst effort yet.

- Grave Desecration - Pierceton Fire - Penal System Grave Desecration Editor, Times-Union: As someone who has a few loved ones interred myself, I can understand and sympathize with your outrage and anguish at the desecration of the grave of a loved one that has been lost to you.I was told second-hand about some ne'er-do-well, drooling, envious little scumbag who supposedly urinated on the grave of my younger brother because he was jealous of how popular my brother had been among his circle of acquaintances and friends.I was tempted to look him up and put him in traction, but I didn't because I couldn't prove that it was true.

- Miracles - Roving Chef - Alcohol Isn't The Problem - Samaritan - Witness To Fall Miracles Editor, Times-Union: In regards to Mr.Stichter's letter concerning "Miracles" I felt a need to respond.First of all, miracles (in the sense that Mr.Kaiser was referring to them) are not ever preformed by a human person. They are done through a believer by Christ Jesus, as the Bible is referring to it. How I come up with this you may ask, is if you read on in the Bible, God states that he knows no one until they are saved by the blood of Christ, and repent. This doesn't mean you'll never sin again, we are all sinners saved or not until we reach the kingdom.Knowing you've sinned and repent it is the difference.

New Prairie Misfires In 51-33 Loss At Triton

BOURBON - So lopsided was Wednesday's girls basketball game between Triton and New Prairie that New Prairie finished the game with 12 field goals, one more than Triton junior center Betsy Salyer. Triton and New Prairie entered the Northern State Conference game with 3-1 records, but the Cougars shot themselves out of the game by halftime. Triton won 51-33, thanks to New Prairie's 12-of-54 (22 percent) shooting.Salyer hit 11 of 15 (73 percent). "New Prairie scored 60-something against LaPorte in their first game," Triton coach Mark Heeter said, "so I know they can score." Salyer turned in a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds.Forward Rachel Speicher added 12.Jessie Bunton and Jessica Vaundry led New Prairie with seven points each. Heeter mumbled "Sloppy, sloppy," as he walked off the court after the game, and here's why: The Trojans were up 20-6 with 3:08 left in the first half despite 10 turnovers.

Plymouth Too Much For Valley Girls

AKRON - Thursday night Plymouth's Stacey Wendel celebrated her birthday against Valley. It was Wendel giving the gifts as she poured in 23 points on 10-of -6 shooting to lead the Pilgrims to a 50-33 win. Wendel, who missed a practice this week for the birth of a niece, didn't start Thursday and watched as Plymouth jumped out to a 5-0 lead. She entered the game at the 5:17 of the first quarter with the Vikings trailing 5-2. That's as close as Valley would get. Early shooting woes combined with Plymouth's domination of the offensive and defensive rebound categories put the Vikings in a hole early. Plymouth led 10-2 after one quarter and the Vikings didn't hit their first field until the 7:30 mark of the second quarter when Danielle Howard hit a lay-up to make the score 10-4.Valley's first points of the game came off two Heather Rathbun free throws. The Pilgrims capped an 11-2 run in the second quarter on a spectacular play by point guard Austen Black.

Double Barreled

Tiger spikers' offense is loaded with one-two punch of seniors Sarah Calhoun and Lisa Estep The left side of the Warsaw offense has been the right combination for Warsaw's volleyball team this year. That combination features senior outside hitters Lisa Estep and Sarah Calhoun taking turns at bombing opposing defenses with booming spike after booming spike. "They are so dominant on our side of the floor that I am very glad they are on our team," Warsaw coach Jamie Byron said."To face someone like their talent could be very frightening. Although vastly different in their styles, the results have been the same every time the rotation changes and one of them is at the left outside hitter position.

Warsaw Grapplers Edge Wawasee In NLC Match

The sign above Warsaw's wrestling room reads, "The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing." If it were a dance, Warsaw's 31-22 Northern Lakes Conference victory over rival Wawasee would have the same magnitude of a senior prom. The win by Warsaw over Wawasee was the first since 1995. It had all the trimmings.1997 Wawasee graduate Darrell Carr, who sat with the Warriors rather than in the stands, would have played the part of the king, returning to crown a new one. Of course, there was also the joy of finding a parking spot for the latecomers. Not to mention as the 'dance' went on, the teams were sreaming at the top of their lungs and standing to witness what was going on at center stage.

Ground Game Lifts Wildcats To Next Level

SOUTH WHITLEY - A mainstay on Whitko's sidelines for nearly a quarter-century, Wildcat football coach Bryan Sprunger describes himself as a litte old school. On a cold November Wednesday afternoon, two days before a sectional championship game at Ryan Huff Memorial Stadium with visiting Norwell, Sprunger's team only practices for an hour-and-a-half because he believes if you can't do something by this time of the season you won't. His command to his team is simple, "do the simple things, and do them well." And so for 22 years now Sprunger's teams have done the simple things - run the ball, block and tackle - and it's produced 129 wins for the South Adams High School and Indiana State University grad. The Wildcats (7-4) host Norwell (5-6) Friday at 7 p.m.in the championship game of Class 3A Sectional 20.The winner advances to next week's regional title game to play the winner of 3A Sectional 19, which pits NorthWood (8-3) against South Bend St.Joe (8-3).

A Classic Battle

Tippecanoe Valley couldn't quite close the door on its upset bid, and the little crack that the Vikings left was all Warsaw needed to sneak back into the game in the Tigers' 63-62 thrilling overtime win over the Vikings Wednesday at the Tiger Den. "We are just fortunate enough to win," Warsaw coach Al Rhodes said."It was just a hard-played game, and it could have gone either way." It was Rhodes' 300th career win as the coach of the Tigers. It was Jason Alspaugh's jumper with 25 seconds left in overtime that provided the Tigers with a 63-62 lead, but it was a charging foul called on Valley ace Jeff Brown that sealed the game for Warsaw with :13 left. The charge not only returned the ball to the Tigers, but it was also Brown's fifth personal, sending him to the bench. It became big a second later when Warsaw turned the ball back over to Valley, but the Vikings' play had been drawn up with Brown and an isolation play in mind.

Valley Boys Win Big

AKRON - Whitko traveled to Tippecanoe Valley with an upset in mind in its Three Rivers Conference boys basketball opener. The upset didn't happen, as Valley used two 8-0 runs in the first half to defeat the Wildcats 60-36. Kevin Kindig grabbed 17 boards and scored 10 points to lead a strong Viking effort. Kindig pulled down seven rebounds in the first quarter. "Both teams played very aggresive basketball tonight," said Valley coach Bill Patrick, who improved his career record to 628-216 and his record at Valley to 151-36."Our defense threw the Whitko offense off and allowed some of our offense to score." Whitko scored the first points of the game with a slow down style of basketball, with Andrew Warner scoring on a jump shot with 6:32 to play in the first quarter. Shane Salyer then hit a three-point shot to put Valley up 3-2.Kaleb Swender of Whitko scored on a layup to put the Wildcats up 4-3.That was the last lead the Wildcats held.

Tigers Take Sting Out Of Hornets

Coming into Friday night's football game against 0-2 Gary Wallace, Warsaw Tiger football coach Phil Jensen looked to use all of his players against an inexperienced Gary Lew Wallace team. The Tigers defeated the Hornets 54-0 last year and figured to be in another situation to make it another route. After Gary Lew Wallace arrived to Fisher Field 30 minutes late, it didn't seem to faze the host. After using the mercy rule in the second quarter and cutting the third and fourth quarters to only six minutes, the Tigers went on to crush the Hornets 48-0 to move to 3-1 on the season. The Tigers have outscored the Hornets 102-0 the past two years.
