The hearts of two people were highlighted at the Warsaw School Board meeting Monday night – one for her generosity to the school district, one for his dedication to students.

Whitko Students 'Stand Up' Together

One month to the date after students from Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., suffered the loss of 17 classmates and staff members, students in schools across the nation began planning a way to honor those who were slain during the school shooting and found a path to begin conversations to affect change locally. Whitko High School allowed students to participate free of consequences such as truancy, unexcused absences or any other form of punishment, according to a news release from the school. Principal John Snyder said, “I saw this as an opportunity for a teachable moment where we could allow the students to lead.”

William M. ‘Bill’ Cochran

William M. “Bill” Cochran, 83, Mentone, died at 5:40 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2018, at his residence. He was born Dec. 19, 1934, in Marshall County, to John A. and Edna M. Marsh Cochran. On May 20, 1961, in Mentone, he was married to Linda L. Besson. She survives. Bill retired in 1993 from NIPSCO, Warsaw, working on the gas crew. He graduated from Mentone High School in 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. He was member of Mentone Church of Christ for over 58 years.

Mallorie Stiver, Warsaw, and William Petro, West Lafayette, have announced their engagement.

Donald E. Frantz

Donald E. Frantz died March 15, 2018, at Grace Village, Winona Lake. He was 92. He co-owned and operated Frantz Lumber Co., North Manchester, for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1987. Since then, he divided his time between Tippecanoe Lake and Deltona. He only recently moved to Grace Village. He was born Nov. 16, 1925, to Oakley Paul and Marie Aileen Pottenger in North Manchester. He graduated from Chester High School and Purdue University and served as a radar operator in the Army Air Corps during World War II.

James Leon Frieden

James Leon Frieden, 92, Silver Lake, died at 1:50 p.m. March 1, 2018, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born Sept. 18, 1925, in Wabash County, to Henry W. and Anna Pearl Reed Frieden. He married Margaret Shenefield on Dec. 15, 1946. She survives. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Dec. 23, 1943, to May 23, 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater as radioman 2nd class petty officer. He was awarded two battle stars for the invasion of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He managed Strauss Elevator, Silver Lake, for 32 years.

Dona Jean Hatfield

Dona Jean Hatfield, 94, “stepped on shore finding it heaven” on March 15, 2018, at Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw. She was born Aug. 20, 1923, to Paul and Ocie Parker Newcomb. On Oct. 22, 1946, she married George Davis Hatfield, who died Dec. 25, 2009. Surviving are a son, Chip (Paula) Gast, Warsaw; a daughter, Kim (Kent) Ring, Claypool; four grandchildren: Doug Yarian, Warsaw; Chad (Fayth) Silveus, Phoenix, Ariz.; Samira (Daniel) Myers, Lake Placid, Fla.; and Charissa (Matthew) Borden, Jupiter, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren: Nilsson, Violet and Aiden.
