TV Seniors Answer The Call

SOUTH WHITLEY - Tippecanoe Valley head coach Gregg Sciarra talked this week about how his seniors were going to have to step up their performances if the Vikings were to finally get a win. The Valley seniors may have done more than Sciarra could have hoped for as the Vikings knocked off Three Rivers Conference foe Whitko 62-59 Friday. It was the first time Valley had beaten the Wildcats on their home floor. Senior Eric Love, the lone returning starter for Valley, finally got some open looks. After scoring just five points in back-to-back games, Love scored 23 points and canned four three-pointers for the Vikings. Another senior, JayDee Parker, played a pivotal role inside, scoring 11 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. Yet another senior, Maurice Looman, came off the bench to provide a spark with nine points, six rebounds, and two blocked shots.

NorthWood Crushes Concord

DUNLAP - As the clock ran down to the end of the first half, the Minutemen wished for more than a miracle. Some coaches say each half is a game in itself, and for the Panthers they dominated the first game. With a 28-0 NorthWood lead after the first 24 minutes of power-packed passing and solid rushing, Concord went into the lockerroom dazed and confused. Led by sophomore Charlie Roeder, the offense ate up the yards early on.Beginning with their first drive, the Panthers pushed the Minutemen back into an unfortunate position. With four consecutive possessions came four consecutive touchdowns. The first touchdown threw the visiting fans into an uproar. This intensity picked up even more as the Panthers defense held the Minutemen to three and out.Roeder scored big as the sight of the goaline inspired him to plow through Concord.

Fawcett, Barrett Keep Squires Rolling

DENVER - If it's possible to upstage David Barrett, the third leading rusher in the state, Steve Fawcett did it Friday. Fawcett was all over the field on defense, racking up an amazing 25 tackles as Manchester won a battle of undefeated conference teams with a 35-14 win over North Miami. Fawcett's defensive effort downplayed Barrett's third consecutive 200-yard rushing game. His 259 yards were actually his worst single game total in three weeks. North Miami held an 8-6 lead in the second quarter, but Barrett and Groombridge had back-to-back touchdowns as the Squires went ahead 21-8 at the half. Barrett scored his third touchdown of the game in the third quarter to nail down the win for Manchester. Barrett, who also happens to have the third-most carries in the state along with being the third leading rusher in the state, had 33 more carries Friday to give him 161 on the year to go along with 1,159 yards rushing.

Harding Trips NorthWood

FORT WAYNE - After the type of seasons that NorthWood and Fort Wayne Harding have had on the offensive side of the football, the general thought was that their matchup on Friday night could very easily become a shootout affair. After all, Harding had scored more than 60 points twice in the postseason and NorthWood had one of the most talented offenses in the area. However, that offensive firepower didn't kick in for the Panthers until the fourth quarter and Harding didn't show the explosive offense that has made the Hawks an offensive juggernaut, but they did have enough to finish NorthWood's season 28-21 in the Class 3A, No.19 regional championship. NorthWood's lone first half touchdown came from junior running back Aaron Huber on a short run in the second quarter.

Squires Prevail Over Saints

NORTH MANCHESTER - If it was possible to go back a few years ago, many people would look at two teams like Manchester and Bishop Dwenger and would have thought Dwenger would bring home the win.But in 1998, it's a different story. The Squires haven't had a year like this since the 1994-95 regular season when they went undefeated. Now, with a record of 11-2, the Squires had no problem defeating the Bishop Dwenger Saints 67-59 Saturday. "We played like we should play and that is winning the conference title," Manchester coach Gary Goshert said. The Squires started off on the right foot in the first quarter when Rex Reimer hit two three-pointers to contribute to their 9-2 run.Still early in the quarter, Saints coach Chris Johnson received a technical foul, and Dwenger went on an 11-7 run. "Manchester took advantage of offensive rebounds throughout the game.We weren't very successful on stopping Chris Enyeart either," Johnson said.

Goshen Nips Wawasee

SYRACUSE - It is not quite there for Wawasee, but it is definitely moving in the right direction. Despite their 2-10 record, the Warriors have shown signs of life the past three games, albeit losing outings. The latest better, but still frustrating outcome for the Warriors was a 41-40 loss to Goshen Friday. The Redskins (10-2) are in the midst of their best season since 1991-92 when they finished 21-4.Goshen also had an earlier win over Wawasee at the Goshen Holiday Tournament.
