10 Years AgoThe Elks #802 hoop shoot winners competed in Ligonier Jan. 20. Tippecanoe Valley Middle School's Heidie Bruner will represent the 2nd District in Anderson Feb. 24. Bruner won the girls division for ages 12-13. Heidie's parents are Ron and Wanda Bruner. Other local competitors included Mentone's Hannah Boggs (8-9 girls), Mentone's Brittany Cross (10-11 girls), Akron's Deon Shaefer (8-9 boys) and Akron's Steve Tillman (10-11 boys). Tillman won the local competition.25 Years AgoFrances Noble, who has worked for the past 24 years in the file room of the Justice Building, retired this week. When friends ask what she is going to do with all her spare time, she jokes, "I'm going to sit at home by the window and watch the cars go by with my husband." Actually, she and her husband, Wayne, also retired, are planning to travel, starting with a trip to Florida and then a vacation along the Northwest Coast.50 Years AgoWhen Tom Phillips, 23, returns to Argentina, Newfoundland, for the third time next week, he'll be taking his wife, Suzanne, and two little sons, Tommy and Kelly, along. Argentina, where the Phillips family will live for the next 14 months, is a tiny town, entirely surrounded by a military base, beautiful forests and rocky hills. It's 90 miles by dirt road to St. Johns, a city approximately the size of Lafayette. An alumnus of Akron High School and veteran of five years service in the Navy, Phillips will complete his tour of duty in April 1962.75 Years AgoKosciusko County's first annual table tennis tourney, sponsored by the Essig Sporting Goods Store, under direction of Raymond Essig, will get under full swing here when 49 contestants begin participation. Thirty-one participants represent the adult division. Fourteen players compose the high school division and four youngsters make up the grade school division. Silver and bronze medals, compliments of the Ward Jewelry Store, will go to the winners and runners-up in each division. The Essig Sporting Goods Store also will give prizes in the form of table tennis equipment.
