Zercher Wins Mental Attitude Award

INDIANAPOLIS -ÊThe IHSAA Executive Committee selected NorthWood's Amy Zercher as the winner of the Mental Attitude Award for Class 3A Girls Basketball. Zercher, a four-year participant in basketball and an all-state volleyball player, finished the game with 17 points and seven rebounds in helping NorthWood to the Class 3A state championship.She was also a member of NorthWood's state finalist basketball team in 1997. Academically, Zercher ranks tied for first in her senior class of 158 students with teammate Natalie Will.She has been active as a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students Against Drunk Driving. Zercher plans to study criminal justice at Ball State University where she has signed an athletic scholarship.Farm Bureau Insurance, the corporate partner of the IHSAA, presented a $1,000 scholarship to NorthWoood High School in Zercher's name.

Ethanol Meeting

The Northern Lakes Concerned Citizens Association met at the Milford Community Center Thursday night.According to Bill Appenzeller, chairman of the organization, 'we are not anti-ethanol, we are not anti-farmer.We are just against the proposed site.We have a valid case against this ethanol plant just based on health issues.We're working as a community to have our voice heard.It's an uphill battle.' The group is concerned about the proximity of the plant to the town of Milford.Presentations were made on the amount of pollution put off by an ethanol plant, and a video was shown of a working plant in Aurora, S.D.The group has hired an attorney, Robert Eheren, Fort Wayne, who specializes in zoning issues.The group stated that all of the local attorneys who are zoning experts have been retained by VeraSun, the company that may propose the plant.If VeraSun does seek zoning variances for a plant in Milford, members of the group plan to attend the county zoning board meeting.

CVB's Linda Arnold Quits; Kittrell Named Interim Director

Long-time Kosciusko County Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Linda Arnold tendered her resignation recently, effective Dec.23. Sales manager Mary Kittrell will serve as interim director for the organization.Kittrell, a seven-year CVB employee, said winter is the time for group marketing meetings, trade shows and meetings with motor coach tour organizations, and she doesn't plan to miss scheduled conferences. "I'll keep my appointments and networking, but will probably stay two days instead of seven," she said."We will be doing the same thing and streamlining it a little. The next CVB board of directors meeting is Jan.18.At that time Kittrell expects the board to discuss the executive director position futher. Mike Stetzel, is the CVB board president and could not be reached prior to press time.

Syracuse Man Pleads Guilty In Pizza Hut Robbery

A second man involved in the New Year's Eve robbery of Syracuse Pizza Hut pleaded guilty in Kosciusko Superior Court 1 Tuesday. Robert Lafollette, 18, of Syracuse, pleaded guilty to charges of criminal confinement and armed robbery, both class B felonies, and faces up to 40 years in prison. Lafollette reportedly admitted to being the gunman during the incident, where he and two other men forced nine Pizza Hut employees into a walk-in cooler while they stole $3,400 from the cash registers. Nicholas Ashkins, 17, of South Whitley, one of the three involved, pleaded guilty to the same charges in late April.He is scheduled for sentencing Thursday. The last man allegedly involved, Ryan Kennelley, 17, Syracuse, plans to stand trial in November.He also was charged with criminal confinement and armed robbery.
