Over The Hill

Editor, Times-Union:Due to basic differences in political ideology, I doubt Ms. Hill has anymore intention of ever watching a Michael Moore documentary than I have of ever reading anything written by Ayn Rand.

WCHS Students' reactions mixed to ID card Issue

Wednesday, five Warsaw Community High School students, selected by the administration, were asked what they think about the student ID tags. Not all of them were happy about the lanyards. "I just don't like everyone knowing who I am," said junior Natasha Galloway."If they want to know, they can ask."She said it is an invasion of her privacy. "I'm not sure how long students will want to wear them and teachers will enforce (wearing them)," said senior Kyle Masur. However, he said, it will probably improve school security. "It has positive and negative effects," said senior Beth Denlinger. The positive is that it provides more security. The negative, she said, is that the administration is too strict about them. She would prefer it if the IDs were clip-ons or a card she could carry in her purse or wallet. "I think," said senior Kelsi Foreman, "that it may be a small inconvenience," but it's being blown out of proportion.

Goldberg - Security Lessons from 'Dune'

The backdrop for my favorite science-fiction novels, Frank Herbert’s “Dune” series, is something called the Butlerian Jihad. Some 10,000 years before the main events of the story take place, humanity rebelled against “thinking machines” – intelligent computers – controlling people’s lives. The revolution was sparked because a computer decided to kill, without the consent of any human authority, the baby of a woman named Jehanne Butler.

Letters to the Editor 01-06-2003

- Tight Squeeze - Courteous Drivers - Use Your Headlights - Angels Among Us - Well Wishers - Festival Of Trees - Adopt-A-Family - No Sledding Tight Squeeze Editor, Times-Union: One assumes certain risks when writing outside the box. Therefore I will submit this article as a hypothesis. Culling is an agricultural process whereby sick and diseased animals are exterminated in order to maintain a healthy herd, justifiable from an agricultural perspective.God forbid the necessity to implement such a program on the human herd. My hypothesis, however, is based on the assumption that such a necessity actually exists.

Greed Tops List Of Items Making News

It was quite a busy week in the news business. First, the WorldCom debacle. I don't consider myself naive, but I really don't understand the level of greed under which some people operate. Here we have a couple guys willing to risk global economic collapse just to line their pockets with a few extra million bucks. And they already had a few extra million bucks to begin with. Really, what were these guys thinking? You don't have to be an accounting genius to figure this one out. They were listing operating expenses as capital expenses.Capital expenses aren't reflected in earnings. About $3 billion worth of expenses in 2001 and another $797 million in the first quarter of this year were wrongly listed. Basically, this means that while the company was reporting profits, it probably was really losing millions of dollars. The financial guys in WorldCom were trying to dupe the board of directors and the markets.

CCAC Funds Cut

The City-County Athletic Complex won't receive a final grant payment from the Kosciusko County Convention Recreation and Visitor Commission until proper financial statements are presented. The commission approved a payment of $34,000 to the recreational facility earlier this year and have paid out $25,500.A condition of that agreement, as with all grants, is an accounting of expenditures. Deb Wiggins, who was re-elected commission president, said the CCAC board has approved suggestions such as reducing the number of board members and add someone from the commission and a Warsaw parks representative to the board. Another recommendation was to update the Web site with the 2006 schedule so people can register for leagues and plan events online.
