Foundation Hits $20 Million Milestone

Reaching a long-time goal was a highlight of the past year for the Kosciusko County Community Foundation. At the Foundation's annual meeting Tuesday, president Don Allen said the Foundation's assets reached $20 million this year - up from $400,000 10 years ago. "We know that with growth comes responsibility - responsibility to remember that it's not how much we have but what we do with it that matters," he said. And what the Foundation did with what they have also was listed by Allen. Some of those other accomplishments include awarding more than $233,000 in scholarships to 138 people; grant-making of more than $884,000; hosting adviser workshops for estate planners, financial advisers and attorneys; helping people experiencing financial hardship because of a medical condition through the Good Samaritan Fund, with more than $124,000; establishing 19 new funds; and changing the Foundation's name to include "community," along with a new logo and slogan.

WCDC Looks At Upcoming Events

More than 15 members of the Warsaw Community Development Corp.met Tuesday to discuss upcoming events and the current financial status of the organization. Jay Baumgartner, WCDC representative from the Bowen Center, analyzed net income for each organizational branch, and reported a large increase in funds collected from the Biblical Gardens in 2005 compared to previous years. Baumgartner called 2005 a "good year" financially but urged the organization to find ways of increasing revenues for WCDC operations. Heeding Baumgartner's advice, Director Carmen Lock said she was currently collecting dues from all businesses involved in WCDC, which would generate income for its operating account. Though membership was currently up, Lock said the finalized list of participants had yet to be determined for the year.

Fair Finances

Mild weather during the Kosciusko County fair was a boon to attendance, which helped the financially strapped fair board, members said this week. The last three nights of the fair, including the Demolition Derby and the Semi-Truck Pull, broke all attendance records, said Becky Thomas, fair board secretary. "The fair did very well this year.It didn't get us completely out of debt" but it did help out, Thomas said. "It was good enough for us to put several thousand on our line of credit," Thomas said. She also said the board raised enough money from the fair to work toward fairgrounds improvements. Besides the weather, which Thomas called this year's biggest advantage, corporate sponsorship at the fair also was beneficial. "It really helped out," Thomas said. For anywhere from $100 to $1,000, a company could sponsor a day or an event at the fair.In return, the company's name was featured prominently around the fairgrounds and on the program.

WCDC Still Deciding Fate Of Comstock House

Members of the Warsaw Community Development Corporation continued discussions Tuesday regarding ownership of the Comstock House. President Clint Pletcher addressed the organization's financial liabilities in operating the facility, a 130-year old building which currently houses low-income residents in the downtown area. "We might be painting ourselves into a corner with certain issues," Pletcher said."It's been a successful program so far but (it's) becoming a source of financial burden." Bruce Woodward, who represented the property Tuesday, said he contacted state officials from the Indiana Housing Community Development Corporation.Because of past grant monies received for the project, a new owner of the Comstock House would be required to follow state regulations, including renting the property at a fair market value. "If the property is put on the market at a bargain price there would be investors willing to take on the compliance," Woodward said.

Warsaw Transportation Director Offers Tips For Safe Bus Riding

Warsaw Community Schools' Director of Transportation Della Swain would like to remind parents of a few safety tips around school buses as the school year begins. The most dangerous part of the school bus ride is getting on and off the bus.The "Danger Zone" is the area on all sides of he bus where children are in the most danger of not being seen by the driver - 10 feet in front of the bus and 10 feet on either side of the bus and the area behind the bus. To keep students safe Swain suggests parents remind children of these safety tips: • Arrive at the bus stop no more than five minutes early. • Stand at least 10 feet away from the edge of the road. • Wait until the bus stops, the door opens and the driver says it is ok to enter before stepping on the bus. • Check both ways for cars before stepping off the bus. • Walk at least 10 feet in front of the bus; never behind the bus.Be sure the driver can see you.
