Atlantis Village Plat Approved

Since the preliminary plat approval for Atlantis Villas subdivision had expired, engineer Larry Long appeared before the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Wednesday. Long, representing owner Mathew Heiman, said the developers were prepared for phase 2 of the subdivision - another 36 lots off Hartzler Street, north of Old Road 30W. Commission director Dan Richard said the only change necessary is a Rule 5 review to govern erosion control procedures. The plat was originally approved in 2000 for phase 1, consisting of 14 lots. The plat "expires" at one year intervals so the plan commissioners have an opportunity to review plans in view of any rules change. The petition was approved on the condition that the Rule 5 information is added. Don Kinney, 1729 Hartzler Drive, said he moved to property adjoining Atlantis Villas in October 2003 and he wasn't aware another subdivision would back up to his property. He said there was a nice wooded area beyond his property.

Syracuse Zoners Approve Two Petitions With Conditions Attached

SYRACUSE - Both petitions for variances before the Syracuse Board of Zoning Appeals Thursday were approved - with conditions. Peter Barrett's petition sought a variance to allow a 3-foot-tall fence to remain as placed 11 inches from the north road right of way.The property is on the east side of Front Street and 160 feet southeast of Carroll Street at 502 N.Front St., Syracuse. Plan commission assistant planner Matt Sandy said under the county ordinances, fences are required to be set back at least 2 feet from all rights of way.The fence, however, is on private property and the right of way is undeveloped. A letter of support for Barrett's petition was sent by Harold and Donna Shrock to the plan commission. There were no remonstrators against the petition.

Mason Resident Closes In On A Century In 2000

Walter Wolever has seen and done a lot over his life. Ninety-nine years offer ample opportunity to experience a wide range of pursuits, and Wolever has made the most of his time. "Mary was from the Lake Wawasee area and she kind of wanted to come back here. That was enough to get me moving," he said. They purchased three acres in the Bel Rohr park subdivision on Lake Tippecanoe and soon moved into the home that Walter himself built.

Warsaw OKs Fiscal Plan For Annexation Of Orchard Ridge

The Orchard Ridge Apartments annexation fiscal plan was approved during Monday's Warsaw city council meeting. During the public hearing, no one remonstrated against the proposed annexation. The fiscal plan shows that the city will spend $850 per year for electricity to the present lift station there and will spend $100 per year for maintenance. As a result of the annexation of the property, an additional $27,838 in annual tax revenue can be assumed. Also approved was a resolution adopting the fiscal plan and a policy for the services to the property. Councilman Jeff Grose said the water at his home on Clark Street was tested for iron and came back at .9 parts per million - acceptable standards are .3 ppm.He said other homes in the area have even higher results. At the June 3 council meeting, residents complained about the yellow-to-brown water coming into their homes.

Shopping Season Takes Off; Local Retailers Optimistic

Hoping to get consumers back in the buying mood, the nation's top merchants opened the holiday shopping season Friday with expanded hours and some of the most aggressive discounts and early bird specials in recent years. Shoppers, after pulling back on spending over the past year, responded by waking up before dawn to head to stores and malls to take advantage of the deals. Warsaw-area businesses report today's sales have been very steady and either equal to or greater than what was expected. The parking lot at The Marketplace was packed before the stores opened. Aundrea McCadams, store manager at Elder-Beerman, reported that Wednesday's sales were brisk and today's sales remain at a solid pace since they opened at 7 a.m.
