New Detective Training Program Under Way

What if you accept a new job but decide you don't like it? What if you give someone a job but he can't quite get the hang of it? With a new program being undertaken at the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, both sides get a taste of what's available through the detective division. Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine implemented the program in February, with Deputy Travis Marsh being the first officer to complete it.Marsh worked with Detective Sgts.Tom Brindle and Sam Whitaker, helping to solve some of the minor crimes being investigated by the department. The program, for which any road officers could sign up, brings the deputy off the road and into office and community as a plainclothes detective. The department and other detectives benefit by having more contact with victims and getting a chance to have lesser cases investigated more quickly; the deputy benefits by gaining experience and learning whether detective work is something he may want to pursue in the future.

Deputies Get Pension Hike

Kosciusko County Council passed a 1998 budget Monday night, but not before hearing an earful about the need to improve benefits for sheriff's deputies who are among the lowest paid officers in the area. Police Merit Board spokesman Stan Pequignot, underscoring the need to boost the police pension plan, said the current pay level was "embarrassing," and that a sense of dedication was a prime reason many deputies remain with the department. Deputies are among the poorest paid in the area, and improving the pension plan would be the "cheapest and best long-term solution," Pequignot said. "If we can't compete at the pay level ...then we've got to compete someplace else. We've got to give something to keep our people here and keep them interested," he said. The pension proposal was pitched after county council chose to provide officers and most others roughly a 3 percent salary hike for 1998.

Wawasee Approves Students' Request To Visit Williamsburg

NORTH WEBSTER - Williamsburg, Va., is "the world's largest living museum," according to Wawasee High School student Jason Fisher. Tuesday, Fisher and three of his fellow advanced placement U.S.history class students and their teacher, Kathy Myers, presented a request before the Wawasee School Board to allow the class to take a short trip to Williamsburg from May 15-18. The board unanimously approved the trip. According to Fisher, the trip was decided upon as a class project and as a way for the students to have an outside-the-classroom educational experience. Once they get off the bus at Williamsburg, Fisher said, the students will become engaged in colonial times. They have a very detailed plan for the trip and it will bring the history they learned about in the classroom alive.
