Lady Tiger XC Coach Steps Down

Warsaw girls cross country coach Matt Campbell informed the Warsaw Community High School athletic department Tuesday that he is resigning as girls cross country coach. Campbell, a former Tiger cross country runner, served as coach for three full seasons. He stepped in as interim coach in 2014 while coach Scott Erba took a leave of absence, and he led the Lady Tigers to a share of the Northern Lakes Conference championship, plus sectional and regional titles and a state finals qualification, where they finished 16th.

E. Green Seeks Phone Upgrade

ETNA GREEN - Hoping to eliminate long-distance calling to Warsaw and Bourbon, a committee of residents is circulating a petition in Etna Green. Gerald and Maxine Kuhn addressed the Etna Green Town Council Tuesday regarding the matter.Mr.Kuhn explained that the committee has been in touch with both GTE and the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission in an attempt to improve service to customers in the 858 exchange. Kuhn said that the lines haven't been improved since 1914 and "we think a lot of things have happened since then." The petition is the first step in a six-step process which will take at least nine months to complete.A minimum of 127 signatures is needed on the petition for the group to proceed to step two; 250 signatures have been collected and the petitions will be out until Thursday at various locations.

Thieves Hit Tarkio Bike Shop

An estimated $800 worth of merchandise was taken during a Wednesday evening break-in to a Warsaw bicycle shop. Police were called to Tarkio Road, South Washington Street, at 8:47 p.m.The manager of the store told police that the building was secure when he left at 6 p.m.and the break-in was discovered when he returned to pick up an item. Entry to the store was apparently made by breaking the front door glass. Items stolen include clothing, backpacks, bicycle parts and accessories, a videotape, two skateboards without wheels and a money tray. The value of the missing items is estimated at $744 and damage to the door at $150.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating Biomet for potentially violating an anti-corruption statute in sales abroad.

Warsawan Shoots Self

A Warsaw man was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital after he shot himself early Sunday morning. Valentino Vargos was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital around 12:15 a.m.Sunday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach. Vargas said he was celebrating the New Year and accidentally shot himself in the stomach. He was transferred to Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne by Lutheran Air.Information about Vargos' condition was not released this morning. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the shooting. Police later found the the gun used in the shooting and secured it at the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.
