Herendeen, Silver Lake, (if hens could read), would post a sign to the effect that the hood of his automobile is not a brooder, or a hen house. The reason:Herendeen made a professional call in the morning to the Roy Montel farm. About noon L.O. Henry heard a peculiar noise under the hood of the physician's automobile where it was parked near his office. He found the hen sitting on the engine. It was returned to the Montel farm. A few days later the physician made another call to the farm and the hen found its way to the hood of the car again. The hen finally ended up being given to the physician.

ELKHART COUNTY - A 20-year-old North Webster man is dead after a three-vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon in Elkhart County.

Gun Sale Leads To Arrest

A 23-year-old North Webster man was arrested Thursday for allegedly selling a stolen gun to an undercover officer. Shaun Steven Brooks, 23, of North Webster, allegedly sold a stolen .223 rifle to an undercover officer.Out on bond in both Kosciusko and Noble counties on drug charges, Brooks was booked into the Noble County Jail on charges of felon in possession of a gun and the illegal sale of a firearm by a felon. He also faces burglary and theft charges in connection with the stolen gun, as well as potential federal charges.He is being held without bond. The rifle was stolen in a burglary in the North Webster area. Brooks allegedly offered to trade the undercover officer the rifle along with 160 rounds of its ammunition for methamphetamine. The Kosciusko County Drug Task Force was assisted by Noble County's IMAGE Drug Task Force, the Noble County Sheriff's Department, Noble County Prosecutor's Office and Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department.

Suspect Leaves Name

SYRACUSE - In what may be one of the county's easiest investigations, police arrested the man accused of stealing from Syracuse Animal Hospital, after he left his full name and contact information laying near the cash drawer he allegedly robbed. James Barr, 19, Albion, reportedly entered the animal hospital Wednesday evening to fill out a job application.After completing the application, and when the receptionist was in another room, he allegedly emptied a cash drawer that was kept behind the counter. Yet while he managed to get away with the cash, until he was arrested Friday, he forgot his completed application, laying just inches from the drawer he robbed. Police investigating the crime simply had to track down the applicant, who they found at a relative's residence Thursday afternoon.Barr readily cooperated with police and was later booked into Kosciusko County Jail on a preliminary charge of theft and on a $2,000 bond.

Woodburn Man Sentenced To Attend College

A Woodburn man who admitted taking a personal watercraft and trailer from Main Channel Marina in May 1998 must attend college or go to prison. Craig Rasawehr, 23, was sentenced March 3 in Kosciusko Superior Court I on a charge of theft, a Class D felony. Judge Duane Huffer deferred Rasawehr's sentence until 6 p.m.May 26.At that time, Rasawehr must report to serve his prison term - unless he has enrolled in and is attending a minimum of three credit hours at Indiana-Purdue University, Fort Wayne, or an equivalent institution of higher education.He then must maintain a minimum of three credit hours per session during the 1-1/2-year term of his sentence or he must report to serve his prison term. Rasawehr also was ordered to make restitution of $1,000 to Main Channel Marina and $4,549 to Monroe Guaranty.Also, he must pay a $100 fine, court costs and a $10 initial and $10 monthly probation user's fee.

Teen Charged In Two Burglaries

An alleged burglar was caught red-handed in a Warsaw business and the suspect also reportedly confessed to another break-in. Joseph H.Bradshaw Jr., 17, of 920 E.Market St., Warsaw, was preliminarily charged with two counts of burglary and one count of theft after being apprehended at Fletcher's Grocery on North Park Avenue in Warsaw. Bradshaw was caught in the store by Warsaw police after the owner of the business, who lives next door, called police about 10:40 p.m.Tuesday and said someone was in the store. Police reportedly removed cash and cigarettes from Bradshaw's pockets.He told police he got in by breaking a basement window.Because the hole Bradshaw squeezed through to get in was small, they also questioned him about a Saturday break-in to Video Plus on East Winona Avenue, where a small hole was knocked in a wall to gain entry there.He allegedly admitted to breaking in, but said he didn't take anything from that business.
