SYRACUSE - In 2001, Warsaw's girls tennis team defeated the Wawasee Warriors 5-0 to claim sectional championship. Eight years later, the Tigers accomplished the same feat, winning their ninth-straight Wawasee Sectional title Saturday.

10 Years Ago October 24 1999 Recently Robert Gephart, longtime Kiwanis member, was honored with Kiwanis International Foundation's George F. Hixson Award for his long service to local and state Kiwanis, Kiwanis International's World Wide Iodine Deficiency Disorders program and for his service to this community. Making the presentation were Marilyn Plummer-Kline, Land of Lakes lieutenant governor and George Breisford, chairperson of the Warsaw Kiwanis Club Member Care Committee. 25 Years Ago October 24 1984 Winners of the candy sales fund-raising contests at Lincoln Elementary School were Randy Polston's fifth-grade class and the following individual grade winners. Polston's class sold some $1,152 worth of candy to earn a pizza party. Winning $20 apiece for leading their respective grades in sales were Eli Shepherd, Angie Winter, Noel Howett and Robert Howard. Also, Dustin Bradway, Tricia Gaff and Ashley Pennington. Angie Winter was the overall winner, selling some $480 worth of candy. 50 Years Ago October 24 1959 Carolyn Phillips, 21, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Freeland Phillips of Warsaw, was crowned "Old Gold Day Queen" at DePauw University in Greencastle between halves of DePauw's homecoming football game with Valparaiso. A 1956 graduate of Warsaw high school, Carolyn won the honor over 22 other girls chosen by 11 male organizations on the DePauw campus. Carolyn is a senior. 75 Years Ago October 24 1934 Five hundred persons packed the Eagles' hall Tuesday night to attend the first of a series of 10 lectures given by Dr. J. Raymond Schutz, of Manchester College, North Manchester. His subject was "Community Civics." He was introduced by Mayor C.C. DuBois through whom the series of free lectures was secured for Warsaw.
