COLUMBIA CITY - Columbia City senior Chasidy Myers did all she could to help her girls basketball team win Tuesday night.In the end, the second quarter and a Warsaw sophomore named Jaclyn Leininger were too much to overcome. With a career-high 27 points from the 5-foot-11 Leininger, and by outscoring the host Eagles 27-13 in the second stanza, No.6 (4A) Warsaw came away with a 62-56 win. "Jaclyn played great basketball tonight," veteran Tiger coach Will Wienhorst said."This was the best game she's played all year." In a rivalry comparable to that of the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League, the six-point win improves Warsaw's overall record to 8-0, while Columbia City falls to 6-3. Warsaw leads the overall series 19-17.Tuesday's win broke a four-game win streak by the home team in the series, as well as giving the Tigers their first win at Columbia City since 1993.

SOUTH WHITLEY - With 5:58 to go in Wednesday's basketball game with Oak Hill, Whitko coach Ray Davis clenched his fist. Six-foot forward Erin Rhodes, Oak Hill's biggest, baddest and best player, had fouled out.The game was tied 46-46. "We had them exactly where we wanted them," Davis said afterward. Make that Oak Hill had the Whitko Wildcats where they wanted them.The Golden Eagles, one of the preseason favorites to win the Three Rivers Conference, beat Whitko 64-62. It was the second time in a week Whitko hosted and nearly beat a TRC favorite, only to fall short.Last week Manchester - the other team favored to win the TRC - beat Whitko 56-52. The loss dropped Whitko to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the TRC.

A champion heavyweight cross-breed shown by Betty Leedy of Warsaw was named the Grand Champion Barrow, and Karen Latimer of Beaver Dam showed the Fat Lamb Champion for the second consecutive year. 75 Years Ago August 13 1932 Don Irvin, 22, Warsaw young man who specializes in the spectacular sport of parachute jumping from balloons and airplanes, signed a contract to appear at the Missouri State Fair at Sedalia, Aug. 22 to 29, inclusive, making several jumps daily. Irvin contracted to jump twice daily, both jumps to be a double parachute leap from a balloon. Irvin used to make leaps from planes at the Zimmer airport west of Warsaw.
