Northfield Girls Edge Warsaw In Tiger Invitational; Marion Takes Boys Race

In their own Tiger Invitational Tuesday, the first five runners for Warsaw's girls cross country team did nearly everything they could do to win the team title. When all was said and done, all they could do was cheer on their teammates. Warsaw and Northfield tied for first with 47 points each, but based on the tiebreaker system the Norseman came out on top. Northfield's sixth runner crossed the line 20th in a time of 19:03, while Warsaw's sixth runner, Jayde Rice, crossed the line 26th in a time of 19:46. Marion finished the six-team invitational in third with 50 points, while Peru was a distant fourth with 105 points.Tippecanoe Valley finished fifth with 123 points, followed by Oak Hill with 174 points. Peru senior Jenal Darland won the girls race with a time of 16:46, followed by Warsaw's Jennifer Finch. Northfield's top five runners finished third, sixth, ninth, 14th and 15th.

Tiger Grapplers Compete In Super Dual

VALPARAISO - Warsaw's wrestlers traveled to Valparaiso for suprer dual competition, five dual meets in one day, Saturday. The Tigers came away with three wins and two losses, defeating Gary West, Boone Grove, and Michigan City, but falling to Valparaiso and South Bend Three Tiger individuals remained undefeated on the season, Justin Brooks (112 pounds), Matt Elvidge (140) and Andy Keener (152).In addition, Paul Thompson (130) had a perfect day at Valpo, while Adam Keener (145) and Steven Palladino (119) suffered just one loss. The Tigers are giving up three forfeits in each match, with nobody to wrestle in the 160-pound and 171-pound matches and with Brandon Klosowski (103) recovering from an injury.

Tigers Face Tough Regional Field

Expect low scores at Saturday's Huntington Golf Regional. Not only will some of the best golfers in the state be there, but because of conditions at the LaFontaine Golf Club in Huntington, the scores should be low. "You are probably going to see some pretty good golf over there," Warsaw coach Bob Turner said."Some of these girls who can light it up from these other schools can shoot some low numbers." The likes of No.8 Fort Wayne Snider, No.10 Carroll, No.16 Fort Wayne Dwenger and hosts Huntington North will attack a course that was hit hard by summer flooding in Huntington and now plays a little different than usual.

Warsaw Girls Win Third Straight Sectional Title

GOSHEN -ÊWhen Warsaw played in the sectional final game against Bethany Christian last year, the Tigers picked up a 2-0 win after scoring goals in the second half of the game "It was destiny," said Warsaw coach Mike Getz."We were in the exact same position last year, playing Bethany Christian at Bethany Christian, and we were shooting at the same goal." Those watching the game may have had flashbacks from last season as the Tigers picked up a 1-0 win over Bethany Christian in the sectional final Saturday afternoon. After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half of Saturday evening's Bethany Christian Sectional final, Getz made an observation that turned out to be crucial.

'Gift Of Warmth' Nets $9,000 In Donations

By literally collecting a dollar at a time, the Ministerial Association's efforts to help the "Gift of Warmth" program resulted in an estimated $9,000 in donations to help keep people's homes heated this winter. The "Gift of Warmth" is a matching-funds operation organized by the Northern Indiana Public Service Co.that helps individuals cover residential heating costs.The program lasts through May, but matching funds can only be used once during a winter year. John Lowe, president of the Ministerial Association and pastor of New Life Christian Church and World Outreach, said donations have been collected recently from church members who donated $1 every week towards the program.

Red headgear trimmed with white "fur" awaited Kosciusko Development Inc.board members Wednesday.Few took the opportunity to try on the new hats - a la Kris Kringle - except KDI chairman Roger Moynahan, Syracuse Town Manager Jeff Noffsinger and, wearing "Santa's little helper" hats, KDI President Joy McCarthy Sessing and economic development director Kim Nance. McCarthy-Sessing presented information gathered during a recent Indiana Commerce Region 2 conference.Two representatives from each of the region's nine counties (McCarthy-Sessing and Brad Bishop attended for Kosciusko County) met recently to discuss the area's strengths and weaknesses, workforce, education, government and infrastructure strategies. The board also: • Heard Nance plans to apply for another Community Development Action Grant.The next round of awards announced will be at the end of October 2005.The program year is Jan.1, 2006, to April 30, 2007.

Warsaw may be stop on new high-speed passenger rail

Eventually, a high-speed rail passenger route will cut across Northern Indiana from Chicago to Fort Wayne. Warsaw may be one of the stops along the way. Mayor Ernie Wiggins told the city council Monday the Indiana Department of Transportation was trying to decide if the route would run northerly or southerly for the past year. In a press release from IDOT, the Transportation Economic and Management Systems recommended in their study the passenger rail service to Fort Wayne be restored while improving existing passenger rail service to the South Bend area. "We're very pleased that may happen," he said of the route possibly going through and making stops in Warsaw.

Bow Hunters Selected For Deer Reduction Effort

Bow hunters who will assist in deer reduction efforts in Warsaw for the next three weeks have been selected. Four of the hunters who were selected began hunting in declared nuisance zones Monday and one deer was taken, according to Deer Task Force chair Jeff Grose. There were 27 hunters who attended a training session Dec.2 at the Warsaw Police Department to qualify to hunt in declared deer nuisance zones in Warsaw. The potential hunters were required to fill out an application form and have an approved background check conducted by the WPD. The hunters also were required to attend the training session at the department to learn about bow hunting safety, reduction zones, and bow hunting guidelines and rules and regulations for the reduction effort. There were 20 of the 27 hunters who were notified by phone Dec.15-16 by the task force management committee informing them they were selected, Grose said.

Zolman Invited To National Tryouts

SYRACUSE -ÊAlthough the high school basketball season is officially over, the accolades keep rolling in for Wawasee sophomore Shanna Zolman.Zolman was recently invited to try out for the Junior National Women's team in Colorado Springs June 9-12. Forty-five girls from around the U.S.have been invited to the June tryouts, and 12 will be selected to compete for the UAS Basketball Junior National team in Argentina July 26-30. "A committee chooses the 45 girls who are invited to the tryouts in Colorado," said Kem Zolman, Shanna's father and Wawasee head coach."Shanna was recommended by several college coaches who have watched her play this year.That is a major accomplishment for her." Shanna is one of just three sophomores invited to the camp. "She's quite excited," said Kem."Even if she doesn't make the team, this is quite an opportunity for her.

Grace Men Drop MCC Opener To Marian

WINONA LAKE - The start and the end were good for Grace.The middle was a completely different story Tuesday in the Lancers' Mid Central Conference opener. An 11-point Lancer lead in the first few minutes of the game became a 30-30 tie at halftime and eventually moved to a 64-47 second-half deficit.A Grace rally closed the gap at the end, but the Lancers fell short 87-81 to the Knights (9-2, 1-0) at Lancer Gym. From the 10-minute mark of the first half to the 10-minute mark of the second half, Marian outscored Grace 51-30 to turn around double-digit leads.

Lancers Squander Chances, Squander Win

WINONA LAKE, IN - The Grace College volleyball team can't say it didn't have its chances against Cornerstone University Tuesday at Lancer Gymnasium in the season opener. Grace controlled the lead in both the second and third games but floundered down the stretch and got swept by a strong Golden Eagles squad 15-6, 15-10, 15-10.The win moved Cornerstone to 5-1 on the season. "They are a very good team," Grace coach Candace Moats said."Their setter was just everywhere." After sophomore Jamie Gill served five consecutive points in the second set, Grace led 7-1.Cornerstone began to chip away at the lead and eventually tied the game at 9-9.Still tied at 10-10, the Golden Eagles scored the final five points to win 15-10. In the third set, Grace led 8-4, but a seven-point run from Cornerstone proved to be difficult to overcome as the Golden Eagles closed out the match in impressive fashion.
