Whitko Looks At Gym Roofing Bids

PIERCETON -ÊFour bids received for the Whitko High School gym reroofing project ranged from approximately $96,000 to a high of $129,000. The bid accepted by the Whitko School Corp.Board of School Trustees Monday was the lowest bid by C.L.Schust, Fort Wayne, for $96,834. According to Superintendent Dr.William Worl, C.L.Schust's bid was even lower than the quote they gave the school corporation several months ago. "The low bid is clearly the best of the four," said Worl. Approximately half of the cost will be paid by the school corporation's insurance because the damage to the roof was caused by wind. The roof, once repaired, should be good for another 15 to 20 years, school board member Michael Braddock said. Under the school corporation's maintenance plan, the high school roof - like all the schools' roofs - will be monitored, Worl said. The reroofing will begin soon and the project should be completed by Aug.19.

County Offices Get Emergency Plan

Ed Rock, Kosciusko County Emergency Management director, told the county commissioners Tuesday that the county needs to have an evacuation plan for the Justice Building and courthouse. Basic, simple instructions for county employees have been put together and posted around the two buildings in the various different departments. When an alarm goes off, the instructions indicate, everyone should evacuate the buildings and meet in designated areas. Each department head is responsible for conducting a head count and reporting anyone missing from their staff. The Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and Jail already had a plan in place and that was incorporated into the new plans, Rock said. Visitors in the buildings are to be escorted out by each department. Rock said he also is working on an evacuation plan for the county highway department.

Lake Access, Water Quality Spark Debate

Topics of lake front property and water quality sparked a debate during Wednesday's Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission meeting. Attendants argued both in support and in opposition of a proposed ordinance regarding back-lot development and erosion control of the county's lakes. In the ordinance, a back-lot development is any property that has less than one-eighth of its total perimeter bound by a county lake. These developments include a right of access to the adjacent lake through a grant of easement, license or other interest. Any residential subdivisions, condominium, cooperative and retirement community with an access point fall into this back-lot category. In efforts to minimize damage to shorelines and limit the burden to these back-lot developments, the ordinance proposes a funneling system for lakefront properties.
