- Defends President Bush Defends President Bush Editor, Times-Union: In response to Mr.Bryan A.Ciula's letter regarding President Bush (yes, he is President not just George Bush), one certainly has to give him credit, since he does not: 1.Advocate spiking trees and endangering the lives of hard-working loggers. 2.Pay homage to environmentalist extremists who torch car dealerships and apartment complexes, putting our brave firemen and -women's lives in danger, along with innocent people who might be passing by. 3.Try to bed down girls who work at the White House as interns. 4.When caught with his pants down, doesn't lie to a grand jury and have his law license revoked (as Slick Willie did). 5.Try to smear and destroy the lives and reputations of those who oppose him.

Ruth (Durik) Fox gave birth to three boys and a girl between 8:35 and 8:36 p.m.June 23. 25 Years Ago June 29 1980 An ambulance crew was rushing an expectant mother to Kosciusko Community Hospital but the delivery couldn't wait. Multi-Township emergency medical technician Sue Bechtold delivered a baby in the ambulance only one block form the local hospital.Mrs.David (Karen K.) Saint, 29, of Winona Lake, gave birth to a girl, Kay Ann, at 1:39 p.m.in the ambulance at Parker and Dubois streets in Warsaw.

First Lady Delivers 2000 Tool Box

Warsaw residents were encouraged Tuesday to learn about their past to make their future the best it can be. Indiana first lady Judy O'Bannon made that push, presenting local Hoosier Millennium coordinator Trish Brown with a "Millennium Toolbox" in the old courtroom of the Kosciusko County Courthouse. "We're here for the millennium and talking about the experiences that bring communities together.Often that means restoring a beautiful old building like this courthouse, or a one-room school house," O'Bannon said."We're talking about taking advantage of the once-in-a-lifetime moment like the millennium to make people feel a sense of community and that they belong. "People want to feel that they are a part of something that will have an impact when they aren't here anymore," she said.

Residents seek answers about town marshal resignation

NORTH WEBSTER - Town council members let attorney Mike Armey speak for them when they were questioned about the demotion of former town marshal Jerry Craig and his subsequent resignation. Dave Anderson started the questions when he asked when a new marshal would be named.Board president Kay Andrews said applications will be taken. "I am making an appeal to the board that they pull from the existing police force when making a selection," J.D.Hoy said.Andrews said the comment was appreciated and the board would keep that in mind. Jay Clutter asked the board specifically about Craig, who tendered his resignation Sept.6 after the council passed a resolution demoting him and giving him notice of termination effective Sept.11.No specific reasons were given for the council's action. "Did he do something wrong?" Clutter asked, referring to Craig.

Fair Board Honors De Good, Elects New Members, Studies '02 Fair

Caylyne De Good was honored by the county fair board members Monday for winning the Indiana State Festivals Association Scholarship Pageant.She is this year's Kosciusko County Community Fair Queen. Thanking the board for its sponsorship, she said, "I look forward to attending fairs and festivals around the state and representing the county.It will be a great experience." She was presented with a cut glass candleholder in recognition of her state-level title, won Nov.9 in French Lick. The Kosciusko County 4-H & Community Fair Inc.'s annual meeting was held in the fairground's Home and Family Arts Building.Three board members were elected by associate members: Roy Bradbury, who retained his seat, Randy Shepherd and Trishell Marshall.They will serve five-year terms.Other candidates on the ballot were Paula Kaiser and Nathan Rhoades.Tom Groninger was nominated from the floor.

Red Cross, Salvation Army Offer Help To Storm Victims

American Red Cross is still assessing the damage today caused by Wednesday's tornadoes. According to Becky Notestine, Kosciusko County American Red Cross director, once the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department told the Red Cross where the storm caused damage Wednesday, disaster workers went out and assessed the damage.They determined whether the damage was minor or major and came up with an estimated cost.The figures, once complete, will be submitted to the state. The information submitted to the state will allow Kosciusko County to receive some funding from the state to help pay for damages.

City Council Reviews Transfer Requests, Salary Changes

In a whirlwind of transfer requests, the Warsaw city council approved seven ordinances Monday to allow funds to be relocated in various city departments. Due to recent increases in fuel costs, two of the ordinances passed involved enlarging operating supply budgets. The Fire Department transferred $8,000 from fire salaries to operating supplies, and $20,000 was moved inside the police department from police utilities to operating supplies. Other transfers were approved to cover Public Employees Retirement Funds, machinery and equipment budgets in various departments. The board approved an aviation department request for $200,000 in appropriations to accommodate changes to the Hangar Taxiway project and an expansion of an airport hanger at the Warsaw Municipal Airport that Zimmer leases from the city.

SYRACUSE - Parents, taxpayers or just anyone interested in how local schools are doing on the academic standards can find out online at doe.state.in.us Wawasee School Corp.Superintendent Dr.Mark Stock gave a presentation to the school board Tuesday on the Indiana Department of Education Web site and the comparative information on it. Any person with access to the Internet can type any school name in on the site and get the academic information on that school.A viewer also can look at how various subgroups do compared to other subgroups, such as males versus females or non-English speaking students versus English-speaking students.However, any subgroup with fewer than 10 students does not have their information posted because of privacy issues, Stock said.

Morgan Named To N. Webster Town Council

NORTH WEBSTER - Certified public accountant Jeff Morgan was selected Thursday night to fill the town council seat left vacant by the death of Myron Clark. Morgan, 33, was selected over four other candidates: Travis Marsh, Robert Curry, Tony Strombeck and Donald Meyer.Precinct committeemen Mark Grady and Kay Andrews, who is also a town board member, selected Morgan during a Republican caucus. Kosciusko County Republican chairman Mike Miner officiated the meeting, explaining he would vote only to break a tie.Republican central committee secretary Charlene Knispel also attended the meeting. Each candidate was given an opportunity to speak, introducing themselves and telling why they wished to be on the council. Three of the five men had law enforcement experience.Marsh currently serves as a deputy marshal; Meyer was a former police chief in Ohio and Strombeck was town deputy for four years and town marshal for 16 years, serving under four councils.

Scouts Attend Warsaw City Council Meeting

It was like a jamboree in Warsaw council chambers Monday night as every public seat was filled with Boy Scouts, leaders and parents from Winona Lake Troop 715, headed by Dick McCleary. The Scouts earned their citizenship badges last night by attending the council meeting, McCleary explained. In the first order of business Mayor Ernie Wiggins named his appointments to various city boards.Councilmen Charlie Smith and Jerry Patterson accepted seats on the Warsaw Board of Works; councilmen Jeff Grose and Joe Thallemer will serve on the plan commission; Tom Heuer to the board of zoning appeals; Jay Rigdon to the aviation board; Bill Baldwin to the Parks Department Board; Bob Sandy to the cemetery board; and Dan Robinson to the Traffic Commission; and Axa Troncoso and Tom Lemon to the Warsaw Housing Authority.Mayoral appointments to the redevelopment commissioners remain the same: Neal Carlson, Jerry Kralis and Tammy Rockey.
