A Topeka man is facing exploitation and theft charges after fraudulently making charges on his father-in-law’s bank account over five months.

South Bend Man Faces Charges In Alleged Walmart Theft Scheme

An alleged coordinated effort to steal items from Walmart so the merchandise could be returned to another Walmart for more merchandise and/or shopping cards landed a South Bend man in the Kosciusko County Jail.

Construction Company Reports $356,000 In Missing Funds

Approximately $356,102 was reported stolen by C.R.I.Construction Tuesday. An employee, Marvin Christopher Whitehead, 39, was arrested in connection with the missing funds. Whitehead was preliminarily charged with forgery by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, and booked on a $100,000 bond Thursday. According to police reports, on Sept.20, 2002, Whitehead opened an allegedly fraudulent C.R.I.Construction business account at Farmers State Bank, Mentone.He allegedly collected checks from customers and deposited them directly into the account without authorization from business owner Mavis Whitehead.He then had bank workers make out cashier's checks directly to him, police said. Christopher Whitehead reportedly had misappropriated business funds once before and was removed from financial authority in 1999. Police said Christopher Whitehead admitted the theft to his family, but said if prosecuted he would flee to Mexico.

Meth Tips Lead To Arrest Of Claypool Man

CLAYPOOL - Tips to the Marshall County and Kosciusko County drug task forces about the possible production of methamphetamine led to the arrest of a Claypool man Wednesday afternoon. Steve Alan Sroufe, 43, of 6403 W.CR 800S, Claypool, was arrested at 2:38 p.m.Wednesday and booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on charges of operating an illegal drug lab and possession of precursors.He is being held on $150,000 bond. Wednesday afternoon, officers went to the residence at 6403 W.CR 800S, Claypool, to investigate a tip that methamphetamine was being manufactured there.When the officers arrived at the residence, Sroufe allegedly ran from the scene, but he later was arrested and a meth lab was discovered on the property. In 2003, Sroufe was arrested by the Kosciusko County Drug Task Force for the theft of anhydrous ammonia, which is used to make methamphetamine.

Leesburg Man Arrested After Fleeing Police

Police have arrested a Leesburg man who allegedly fled from officers in a borrowed car and then stole a motorbike in a failed attempt to escape. Booked into Kosciusko County Jail at 2 a.m.today was Randall Warren Baker, 24, of 4615 Ind.13N, Leesburg.Baker was preliminarily charged with driving while intoxicated, criminal recklessness and theft. At 12:05 a.m., a KCSD deputy reportedly spotted the car Baker had borrowed from an acquaintance, Eva L.Radcliff, Leesburg, speeding through North Webster.The car disappeared before it could be stopped. Police received a call at 12:17 a.m.reporting a car matching the description of the Radcliff vehicle abandoned on Syracuse-Webster Road. Officers apprehended Baker nearby reportedly trying to make off with a motorcycle allegedly taken from the Scott Ousley residence, Ind.13N, Pierceton.Police reported Baker gained entry into the house by kicking in a door.

Cops Seize Records Of Lending Firm

LEESBURG - Police seized records of a financial lending company Thursday while serving a search warrant at a Tippecanoe Lake home. Computers and financial records were among the items removed from the home-based Fedfinancial Group Inc.at 42 EMS T6 Lane.No charges have been filed in connection with the investigation that started last April 18. Officials with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department were alerted to a possible loan scam after $75,000 was sent to the local company by a Bloomington company for the closing costs on a $3 million loan.The loan was never finalized, police said, and attempts to have the $75,000 returned have been unsuccessful.Police said the contact between the two companies has been via the Internet. The case is being investigated as theft at this time, with a total of $192,500 considered stolen.
