State Honors Area Educator

Ralph J.Bailey has been honored as the Lorin A.Burt Award recipient for 1997. The award, one of the top education awards in the state, was presented to Bailey at the School Board and School Superintendent's Convention Sept.29 in Indianapolis. Nominees for the award must have made a significant contribution to Indiana public education, either during the course of a school year or over the course of their career.Bailey, 70, was chosen from 11 Indiana educators to receive the honor. Bailey has been named a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest award bestowed by the governor of Indiana.The award exemplifies "humanity in living, loyality in friendship, wisdom in council and inspiration in leadership." He is vice president of Whitley County Retired Teachers Association and the John & Hester Adams Trust Board.He is co-founder of Somebody Cares Inc., a counseling program in Whitley County serving needy students and adults.

Manchester Schools OKs '07 Budget

NORTH MANCHESTER - Permission to advertise the 2007 budget for Manchester Community Schools was granted by the school board Tuesday at its regular meeting. Business Manager Steve Shumaker presented budget numbers totaling $14,585,000. Of that amount, $9,894,200 is the general fund, and $1,948,889 makes up the debt service fund. The capital projects fund totals $1,636,500, while $668,000 comes from the transportation operating fund. The bus replacement fund takes up $158,500, and the special education/preschool fund totals $56,000. The retirement/severance bond debt service fund equals $223,002. Shumaker will advertise the budget and request a tax rate of $1.9953, less than last year's request of $2.0020.

Principals Named At S. Lake, S. Whitley Schools

David L.McComb will be the new principal of Silver Lake Elementary School, Dr.Lee Harman, superintendent of Warsaw Community Schools, recently announced. McComb will replace Eugene England, who retired this year after more than 20 years as Silver Lake Elementary principal. A Fort Wayne native, McComb was formerly an elementary principal with East Allen County Schools in New Haven.He also has been with Smith-Green Community Schools and Northwest Allen County Schools.

Whitko Hears Public Input On Choosing New Superintendent

PIERCETON -ÊFor a second time, the Whitko Community School Corp.held a public meeting for input on the corporation's next superintendent. And for the second time, the turnout was small - approximately nine patrons attended Monday. Current superintendent Dr.William Worl is retiring after this school year.Completed applications for the superintendent position are due by March 1, with the school board meeting with a university screening committee March 4.Interviews will be conducted by the board beginning March 10, and the new superintendent will be selected no later than April 28.The superintendent will assume duties July 1.

County honors Hobbs for valor

MILFORD - For his actions in the line of duty, Milford Town Marshal Dave Hobbs will be presented with a plaque and a medal of valor. Bob Morrison, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department and member of the American Legion, told the Milford Town Council Monday that Hobbs needed to be recognized.On June 26 at 7 p.m.in the commissioners' room in the Kosciusko County courthouse, Warsaw, Hobbs will be presented with a plaque.The KCSD also will present Hobbs with a medal for valor. Since Hobbs was a former marine, Morrison said, there will be Marines represented there as well as residents from Peabody Retirement Home, who will sing patriotic songs.

10 Years Ago April 28 1987 Betty Ellison of Warsaw has been chosen to represent the United States as an attache for the country of Belize (formerly British Honduras) in the Pan Am Games this August.Ellison retired in 1981 with 20 years as a Spanish teacher at Warsaw High School behind her. 25 Years Ago April 28 1972 Joe Brown, son of Lt.and Mrs.Eugene Brown of the Warsaw Police Department, has been selected by the Warsaw Kiwanis Club to attend the third annual State Police Career Camp.The youth is a sophomore at Warsaw Community High School.

10 Years Ago May 21 1987 The new pool for Warsaw Community Schools will soon be completed, and by next month will be in full usage with a variety of programs for the community that will cover all ages and all ability levels of swimming.Dedication is scheduled for May 30. 25 Years Ago May 21 1972 Mrs.Helen Schade, who retires this year after teaching for 48 years, was put in the spotlight at the recent PTO meeting at Washington School.Mrs.Schade has set a record for having taught the fourth grade for 48 years, and 40 of those years were in the same classroom at Center Ward, now the junior high school.

10 Years Ago Dec.30 1986 Wawasee High School Marching Band provided some class entertainment for viewers of the Gator Bowl last week in Jacksonville, Fla.About 140 band members and chaperones arrived in Florida Dec.26 and retired Dec.30.The band is led by director David Blackwell. 25 Years Ago Dec.30 1971 Developing the educational use of a wooded area west of Wawasee High School was approved at the Lakeland Community School Board meeting.The first trail in the woods will have 38 markers identifying points of interest including trees and shrubs.Two other trails will be established.

NORTH WEBSTER – Rex E. Lewis, 77, of Pierceton, died at 10:54 p.m.  July 29, 2011, in St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was born May 27, 1934, in Lafayette, to Alfred E. and Vera E. Purdy Lewis. On March 29, 1958, he married Margene L. Dykhuizen, who died June 8, 1998. On Jan. 1, 2002, in Lafayette, he married L. Delores “Dee” Stone Grubbs, who survives.
