KDI Begins Small Business Loan Program

In order to better serve the increasing number of small businesses in the Warsaw area, Kosciusko Development Inc.discussed a new policy Wednesday that would establish a revolving loan program for the county. KDI members voted unanimously to approve the loan program giving the local banks the ability to contigently commit to applications.Once desired funds are secured for the program, lenders will then have the ability to approve suitable applicants for loans. KDI plans to be the coordinator between banks and applicants.Lake City Bank will act as the program's trustee, and will be the administrator of the funds. The policy hopes to encourage job creation and retention in the community, as well as small business expansion. "We've focused on the very small businesses without the means to apply for a larger means," Lake City Bank vice president Clint Pletcher said. Jim Tinkey, KDI treasurer, presented budget totals for the first six months of 2005.

Warsaw Council Considers Whimet Tax Abatement

A Polish edition of National Geographic was passed between city council members Monday, the volume showcasing Warsaws of the United States. Fortunately a translation of the article of sister cities to the Polish capital accompanied the publication. The Kosciusko County Warsaw was featured in a paragraph and two photos. Attorney Steve Snyder appeared before the board requesting a 10-year tax abatement on personal and real property for Whimet Inc. Owners Murvil, Mary Lou and Chad Whitehead attended the meeting, too. Whimet has purchased property formerly owned by Sun Metal Products on Ind.15. Whimet is in the business of metal polishing in support of local orthopedic industries. Whimet has retained 35 former Sun Metal employees and plans to add eight new jobs over the next two years. The Whiteheads plan to renovate the facility and invest $300,000 in real property and $500,000 in personal property.

South Town Sewer Plans Discussed

WINONA LAKE - The plan commission received preliminary plans for the extension of sewer service into South Town Tuesday. Town engineer Larry Long told the commission the project would have an estimated total cost between $170,000 and $200,000, and recommended it be done in three stages. The first phase would be a gravity feed line to extend south from Boys City Drive 1,600 feet, culminating at a manhole.Phase 1 would cost approximately $37,000, Long said. The second phase, with an estimated cost of $ 98,000, would be the construction of a pump station and force main between the Phase 1 endpoint and Roy Street. The third stage would be the construction of a gravity feed line running parallel to the forced main.It carries an estimated cost of $35,000.

YMCA Outlines Plans To Buy Racquet Club

The Kosciusko Community YMCA board of directors announced Tuesday they have signed an agreement to purchase the Warsaw Racquet Club. The YMCA plans to reopen the facility for tennis in late summer.The club was closed March 31. The purchase of the Warsaw Racquet Club fits into the YMCA's long-term strategic plan.According to board president Bob Durgin, "The YMCA's strategic vision calls for acquiring additional property for the construction of a new primary facility which is suitable for future expansion to support new programs.The current opportunity to acquire the Warsaw Racquet Club and the adjoining 10 acres meets this strategic vision." The YMCA intends to operate the current Warsaw site as a branch facility, along with the branch in North Webster, after the future construction of the new facility.
