Last-Second Shot Dooms Warsaw In Sectional Opener

After finishing first and second in the Northern Lakes Conference this season, it was only right for the Warsaw and Northridge girls basketball teams, arguably the two best in the sectional field, to meet in the first round of IHSAA 4A Sectional 4. In an incredibly exciting, back-and-forth game that came down to the final possession, it was the Lady Raiders that avenged a loss earlier this year with a 57-55 victory.

Thomas a Wagon Wheel Theatre Favorite

When people make a list of favorite Wagon Wheel Theatre performers, there is always one name that shows up time and time again. Rod Thomas. But ask Thomas what it feels like to be so well-liked, if he feels any pressure from all the admiration, and he plays it off modestly. "No pressure.I'll tell you that," he said during an interview Tuesday afternoon in the theater office."It's a huge compliment that I've just been able to connect with people in that way.If I'm connecting to people ...that's what we do as artists.Try to connect with people.Take them on a journey. It really is a huge compliment.I enjoy coming back here.It feels like home. It's nice because they always want me back here." His many fans may recall Thomas from roles in "Phantom of the Country Opera," "The Nerd," "The Glass Menagerie," "Grease," "Children of Eden," "Forever Plaid," "Oliver" or "The Music Man." But his love for the theater, for performing, goes back to the first grade.

K Of C Gets Variance Extension

The Knights of Columbus received a six-month extension for a use variance to operate a club/lodge in a R-1 zoned district by the Warsaw Board of Zoning Appeals Monday. The building is planned for the northeast corner of Fort Wayne and Lindberg streets. No activity has begun on the site.Board member Dan Hampton, a K of C member, abstained from the vote. The board also approved a variance from developmental standards as requested by Warsaw Health Foods.A 32-square foot flashing, illuminated wall sign has been installed at 1228 E.Center St., on the building's east side.Flashing, illuminated signs are not permitted in a R-2 district. Store owner Chuck Gunsolley said he purchased the building in 1987.He was unaware of any sign restrictions because there are several similar signs on Center Street. Hampton asked if the "flasher" portion of the sign could be switched off and Gunsolley said yes.The item was approved with board member Rick Keeven voting nay.

Barbee District Sewer Plan Moves Ahead

Barbee Lakes Conservancy District board members vowed to move forward with sewer plans despite a raucous crowd of opponents who showed up for a meeting Tuesday. Although the project has been in the works for nearly five years, the first sign of opposition arose last month and again Tuesday. Board members agreed to hear concerns even though the time for public input has passed. The proposed sewer project would affect about 1,400 property owners in the Barbee Lakes chain northeast of Warsaw. After nearly 40 minutes of input, which included questions about the need and cost of such a project, board vice chairman Lowell Gilmore cut off the debate, and the board agreed to move ahead. In doing so, Gilmore reminded the crowd it would be six to eight months before further steps are taken. Afterward opponents announced plans to meet at 6:30 p.m.Tuesday at the American Legion in North Webster.

Leesburg Church Plans Picnic To Say 'Thanks'

A thank-you picnic Saturday at Center Lake appears to be a first for area emergency personnel. Leesburg Grace Brethren Church has planned the picnic to show appreciation to those who helped fight the fire that destroyed the church July 22. Jeff Hoffard, pastor of LGBC, said he had the idea for a thank-you picnic the first Sunday after the fire."We thought it would be a nice gesture to let everyone know we appreciate their hard work," he said."It's just a way of getting everyone together to tell them thanks." The congregation has been working this week to prepare for the picnic. The menu will include hot dogs and hamburgers, baked beans, potato salad, cookies, chips and drinks - all either prepared or donated by people from the church. Youth from the church are doing their part by planning games for children who come. The event, which begins at 5 p.m., will include a short public thank-you from Hoffard.

Winona Town council members also decide not to take action

WINONA LAKE - Although there were no remonstrators, and attorney Rick Helm advised the town council there was no reason to deny the petition, town council members continued a vacation request submitted by Harry Langford, Elaine Langford and Jane Cook without comment or discussion. The item was scheduled for public hearing at Tuesday's meeting and no members of the public in attendance spoke about the item which would vacate a 28-foot strip of land between the Langford and Cook properties. The adjacent property owners have maintained the area for decades and it has never been used by the public as a beach or boat launch. At a plan commission meeting, which ended five minutes before the town council meeting began, the item was continued because the commissioners wanted more information. In other business the council: • Denied a request by Bill Crane, an organizer for the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society's "Light the Night" event planned for Sept.20.
