Warsaw Kickers Down Rockies

It took Warsaw's varsity boys soccer team less than seven minutes to score Tuesday evening. It turned out to be the game-winner. Hosting Northern Lakes Conference and U.S.30 rival Plymouth at the City-County Athletic Complex in the regular season finale, Warsaw put itself on the scoreboard 6:29 into the first 40-minute half when senior Jake Rogers found the back of the Rockies' net. And by keeping the ball on Plymouth's half of the field the majority of the game and not allowing the Rockies many scoring opportunities, it was the only goal Warsaw needed. "We tried a little different look, and I thought we put together some decent soccer," said Tiger head coach Scott Bauer."We dropped Jake (Rogers) back to midfield. That gave us a little more composure in that part of the field." Warsaw played the game without senior Nate Salsgiver, who was given a red card in Saturday's game at rival Wawasee and sat out Tuesday's contest.

Lancers Win As Moore Returns

WINONA LAKE - After missing three games with a back injury, Grace College junior point guard Matt Moore connected on a career-high six three-pointers, three in the first five minutes of action, as the Lancers hosted and defeated Purdue-Calumet 79-67 Tuesday. The Lancers went 1-2 in the three games Moore missed and also lost the game he was injured in.Grace is 3-0 with Moore healthy. Grace jumped out to a 28-8 lead eight minutes into the action, but Purdue-Calumet cut the deficit to four by halftime, 41-37.Moore and Brian O'Dell hit back-to-back three-pointers to open the second half, and the Lancers weren't challenged the rest of the way. Freshman Matt Abernethy led the Lancers with 23 points and seven rebounds, while Dan Scharlach had a team-high 10 rebounds despite playing just 22 minutes because of foul trouble.Grace outrebounded Purdue-Calumet 44-21 and held the Lakers to two offensive rebounds.

Vikings Get Back On The Winning Track

MENTONE - Put No.2 without Jeff Brown and Nick Stutzman in the book as a success.Despite being without two of their top starters and Andy Young, a reliable back-up shooting guard, the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings defeated the Wabash Apaches Friday night 73-48. Wabash has only two wins on the season. After Valley lost to Manchester a week ago, 75-41, the Vikings had to be scratching their heads and wondering what they would do over the next three games without Brown and Stutzman. What they did was play as a team and win as a team.Five players scored in double-digits, and one of them, Darren Parker, had nine assists.Another one, Brian Lenfestey, grabbed seven rebounds to complement his 13 points.Lenfestey and Eric Love each had three steals and Scott Cooksey and JayDee Parker shot a combined 11 of 18 inside to dominate the paint.

Becky Tusing, 41, Aarron's sister, also of Dewart Lake, was listed in fair condition at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, after her surgery.Tusing donated 60 percent of her liver to her brother, who was in serious need of a transplant. Tusing was released from the hospital July 24. Busch's and Tusing's operations took place at two different hospitals to allow the specialists to do the procedures in the hospital where they felt most comfortable.Doctors thought it was important for both patients to stay in the hospital where they could receive the best care.

Remember When 8.22.2011

10 Years Ago What exactly would tempt someone to arise at 5:30 am., grab onto a 75-foot length of kevlar-reinforced rope, jump into the lake wearing nothing but a wet suit and yell, "Hit it!?" The answer? Barefoot water skiing. On any given calm morning on Tippecanoe Lake one might find Bob Ragland, a captain with American Airlines; Patrick Pfefferkorn, a real estate agent for Century 21; and Jon Mark; an optometrist at Grossnickle Eye Center; exhibiting their idea of recreation. The three have become quite adept at deepwater front and back starts, one-foot fronts and backs and other advanced footinÕ techniques. 25 Years Ago At least six Warsaw Community Softball League teams will be going on to national or world series tournaments in various divisions for the National Softball Association. Video World, Warsaw Moose, JR's Polishing and Pinky's 76 will be in the NSA Class D Nationals at Lexington, Ky., Aug. 30-Sept. 1. On the same Labor Day weekend, Lee Hartle Electric will be in Indianapolis, while Champs will be the local representative in the Class B World Series in St. Louis. 50 Years Ago Miss Donna Mantle, 20, who recently completed her first year of nurse's training at a hospital in Bismarck, N.D., has been visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roswell Robbins, Sidney. They'll take her back to Bismarck where she resumes her training. A graduate of Sidney High School, Donna worked two years at the Murphy Medical Center.
