Last week Rachelle McCammon, Whitko's coach, said their team was taking baby steps to learn to win.Learn they did.In the end, Whitko came out on top 15-10, 15-13. Valley, however, did not go down easily.In game one, Valley struck early and scored the first point. After three possession changes, the score was tied 1-1 as Valley's Amy Nellans stepped up to serve.She served up three straight points to put the Vikings in the lead 4-1. Behind 4-1, Whitko started taking baby steps.The Wildcats scored one point on three of their next five possessions to tie the score at 4. Valley and Whitko each scored one point on each of their possessions, making the score 5-5.

WHA Works To Correct Financial Reporting

Corrections to financial reports of the Warsaw Housing Authority delayed approval of the reports at Monday's board of directors meeting.A special meeting is set for next Monday to accept those reports. According to Angie Shirk, executive director of the WHA, the board's treasurer, Sherri Ruggier-Milton, wants the agency's accountant to do the reports differently because the allocations are not as they should be.However, the accountant is not sure what changes are needed and Ruggier-Milton did not attend Monday's meeting due to illness. Shirk said the changes are simple enough to take care of over the telephone, but would need to be handled by Ruggier-Milton. The WHA board will meet at 5:15 p.m.Monday in the law offices of Lemon, Armey, Hearn & Leininger to approve the corrected financials.

Warsaw Schools Hires WPD Chief As Safety, Security Director

Warsaw's police chief now has a second job - as safety and security director for Warsaw Community Schools. Steve Foster, recently appointed as chief of the Warsaw Police Department, will begin his duties immediately.The Warsaw school board approved the position Monday. Dr.Lee Harman, school superintendent, said Monday that the school corporation has been proactive for several years on the issue of school safety. "It's going to continue to grow in importance and complexity.We need outside expertise and experience," he said. The part-time position will require the equivalent of one day a week, he said, and will pay $10,000 per year.The board said it anticipates state grant funds to help cover the salary. Foster has advised the schools in the past on safety and security issues.

WCS May Re-Open Claypool School

Claypool Elementary School likely will be reopened - the question, though, is when. Warsaw Community Schools board of trustees held a special meeting Monday to discuss the Claypool situation. Board member Chuck Sauders opened the meeting Monday with a motion that would have opened Claypool this fall with contingencies.His motion failed by a vote of 1 to 6. School board members had concerns and questions about Sauders' motion.His motion was made in consultation with Eisenhower principal Chris Gensinger and Washington principal Tom Ray.

Strong Finish Gives Raiders Title

NAPPANEE -ÊThere wasn't a sectional in the state that featured a bigger boys basketball game than the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional.The game pitted No.5 Northridge and No.10 NorthWood at the Panther Pit Saturday night for the sectional championship. At 6:30 p.m., there was a line about a mile long waiting to get into the highly touted rivalry between two familiar Northern Lakes Conference foes.This was the third matchup this season for the two squads.Northridge defeated NorthWood in the Goshen Holiday Tournament, and NorthWood got revenge on its home floor during the NLC game, which helped the Panthers secure the NLC crown. Something had to give.By the end of the night, one of these two ranked teams would be getting ready for a spring sport. In the last meeting between these schools, a NorthWood win, Northridge couldn't control its composure.That was the key, according to Raider coach Steve Austin.

Police Seek Help From Residents In Tracking Down Drug Dealers

Enough is enough. Police have long been tired of having to deal with drug dealers, but the general public may not think enough is being done to combat the drug problem. Well, the public is being enlisted to help the police in drawing the line and putting an end to drug dealing in their neighborhoods. In an attempt to reinvigorate the Kosciusko County Special Operations Team, Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine is promoting a program in which names, addresses and vehicle descriptions of people suspected of drug activity can be turned over to police.The information can be given anonymously, but those who do reveal their identity to authorities can have the security of confidentiality. "The public knows we've had some problems the last couple years," Rovenstine said of the drug task force.The unit was temporarily disbanded a couple years ago and is now back at full force, although Rovenstine would like to see additional manpower in the future.

Despite New Signs Advocate Still Seeks Red Light Cameras

Ann Sweet's dedication to safety is as strong as ever, and the eight years following her daughter's death only encourages her towards the goal of nationwide traffic security. On Oct.27, 1997, Shawnee Ulrey, Sweet's daughter, was struck and killed by a semi tractor/trailer at a U.S.30 intersection.According to witness reports, the driver of the semi disregarded a red light at the intersection before the fatal collision took place.One witness said that no brake lights flashed as the semi approached the traffic light. "I'll do whatever it takes to stop red light running in the county and everywhere else," Sweet said."There's no way, as long as I live, that I'll let what happened to my daughter rest." The seven miles of U.S.30 highway inside Warsaw city limits is ranked the second-highest thorough-fare in Indiana in regards to accident reports and traffic violations.
