Tippe Releases Enrollment Data

MENTONE - Preliminary enrollment figures were released Monday at the Tippecanoe Valley school board meeting. The figures show a decrease of 28 students for the 1998-99 school year. Akron had a 33-student decrease, Burket showed a decrease of six students and the middle school had a decrease of 27 students. The only increases were at Mentone, up 32 students, and the high school, with an increase of 13.The total enrollment was 2,242 students. The board formally adopted the 1999 budget, including the capital projects plan and the transportation plan.

Lakeland Christian Names Top Students

Lakeland Christian Academy announced John Wildman as its 2005 valedictorian. David Singleton and Jonathan Steele are co-salutatorian. Lakeland Christian also awards a Timothian award to the graduating senior who best exemplifies the spiritual exhortation found in the book of Timothy, 4:12 - "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity."The award this year was given to Andrew Hollis and Abbey Herendeen. Wildman is graduating with a grade point average of 98.15 on a 100-point scale.Wildman is the son of Ron and Sharon, Warsaw.He has been a member of student senate, executive student senate and served as class treasurer.He is a member of National Honor Society, and served as its treasurer.He plans to attend Cedarville University in the fall to major in biology, where he received the presidential and leadership scholarships.

Manchester Names Top Students

Heidi Wieland and Erin Groombridge have been named valedictorian and salutatorian respectively for the class of 1997 at Manchester High School. Weiland ranks first in her class with a grade point average of 10.977 on an 11.0 scale.She is the daughter of Dr.Rex Wieland and Peg Wieland. Weiland is a member of National Honor Society and the Academic Super Bowl team and received the Academic Excellence Award and the Squire Award.She was named Academic All-State in golf and first team Academic All-TRC in golf and basketball. She served as class president four years and participated in softball, yearbook and newspaper staff, Student Council and LIFE and was a Junior Achievement consultant. She is a member of the Church of the Brethren youth group, church worship leader and disaster relief worker, as well as a biddy basketball and junior league softball coach. Weiland plans to major in political science at college before entering law school.

New Book Encourages 5th-Graders To 'Be The Best You Can Be'

Encouraging the youth of Kosciusko County to be their best is the purpose of a book distribution under way by the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine plans to give a copy of "Be The Best You Can Be" to every fifth-grader in the county within the next two years.Rovenstine said he plans to personally present each of the students with a copy of the book and, possibly, read an excerpt from it. The hard cover book is emblazoned with a gold sheriff's star and includes letters of support from influential celebrities, such as Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Jim Davis, creator of "Garfield." Readers are presented with stories about situations that they could face in their formative years.The stories tell how the characters take the high road and choose to do the right thing in the face of adversity and challenge the readers to do the same.

Tippecanoe Valley Names Top Students

AKRON - Tippecanoe Valley High School recently announced Sara Lynn Zehr as its Class of 2003 valedictorian and Jenna Gross, salutatorian. Zehr is the daughter of Cliff and Cindy Zehr, Silver Lake.She plans to attend Indiana Wesleyan University. Zehr was a four-year member of the cross country and track teams and a three-year member of the basketball team.A four-year member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, she also was a three-year member of student government, serving as secretary her senior year, and served as president of National Honor Society, of which she was a member for two years.In addition, she was a member of the Spanish Club (three years), Sunshine Society (one year), Varsity Club (three years), weightlifting club (one year) and Peers Educating Peers (one year).She was active in the Olive Branch Church of God youth group. Gross is the daughter of Jerry and Jill Gross and plans to attend Butler University where she will study chemistry/pre-med.

Tippy Valley Announces Top Three Graduates

MENTONE - Kristin Shoemaker was named valedictorian of Tippecanoe Valley High School's class of 2000, and Lynette Feldman and Wendi Norton are co-salutatorians. Shoemaker, the daughterry and Diana Shoemaker, Akron, graduated with a grade point average of 11.52 out of a possible 12.She is a member of National Honor Society, SADD, Sunshine Society, 4-H and Spanish Club.She was co-editor in chief of the school newspaper and worked on the yearbook staff. A volunteer at Woodlawn Hospital, she also received their auxiliary scholarship and was a Hoosier Scholar and a recipient of the Indiana State University presidential scholarship, Marine's Scholastic Achievement Award, Science Department Award and Prudential Spirit of the Community Award. She plans to participate in the Rural Health Program at Indiana State University, where she will be a pre-med major.

Deerfield Subdivision Final Plat Approved

Phase one of the Paths of Deerfield subdivision was granted final plat during Warsaw's plan commission meeting Monday, ending a year-long petition by developer Biggs Inc. The subdivision, a 40.5-acre tract on the southwest corner of CRs 75N and 175E, will now consist of 109 residential lots.Phase one will begin developing 46 lots inside the property, mainly in the central to southern area of the subdivision. Both adjacent county roads currently are being realigned to create a standard intersection just northeast of the subdivision, a requirement set by the commission before granting Biggs preliminary plat approval.Surrounding utilities are being relocated, and the centerline of the new intersection is marked. Preliminary plat approval for Paths of Deerfield was granted in September 2005, following numerous postponements of the matter and lengthy debates regarding city expectations of Biggs' planned unit development.

Historic Home Tour On Tap

Kosciusko County Historical Society is planning a Historical Home Tour this year, although the term "home" is used loosely. Most of the seven buildings on the tour have housed families.The Wilson-Deaton one-room school house outside of Claypool is an exception, as is The White Hill Manor in Warsaw. Committee members met with Dan and Eileen Ransbottom recently, owners of the old Claypool District School - No.8. The brick structure stands at the corner of County Farm Road and CR 700S. Built in 1881, the building served as a one-room school house until 1914. The property was owned by Clay Township until 1962, when Robert and Eleanor Scott purchased it.Dan Ransbottom acquired the grounds during an estate sale. To date, an overhead door has been removed and the Ransbottoms have a craftsman recreating the original door; the old flooring has been removed with plans to replace the hardwood surface.

HAMS Gather For Radio Field Day

Tents, antennas, HAMS and chili will all be found at the Hoosier Lakes Radio Club Field Day this weekend. The event is open to the public and will take place at Jack Worth's residence, 4180 N.CR 20E. Worth, club organizer, treasurer and host of the event, plans to broadcast various signals for 24 continuous hours starting 1 p.m.Saturday.An estimated 30 broadcasters are planned to attend.

BOW Approves Routine Contracts, Hears From Pension Plan Members

Resource Development Group, Warsaw, will provide city employees with "human relating skills" in a series of two hour courses over five workshop sessions. The $4,100 contract, approved by the Warsaw Board of Works Friday, is designed to improve customer service skills; improve taxpayer's perceptions of services, and improve communication among employees. The board tabled a request by the police and firefighter's pension plan members regarding the award of benefits to an individual which exceed the policy's parameters.Legal council for the members did not appear and another date will be set to answer the group's questions. In other business the board: • Released a mortgage as requested by Pam Kennedy of Housing Opportunities of Warsaw because the clients changed their minds about participating in the program.A second mortgage also was released because the property owner sold her home.

The brick and steel building was put up for sale in 1944 by the State Armory Board.
