Response To Letter

Editor, Times-Union: In Tony Fleckenstein’s April 8 letter, he defends the current administration’s service-cutting policies as mere attacks on waste, fraud and abuse, while making use of biblical references (“oh, ye of little faith,” “doubting thomas”) to chastise those who place little trust in this White House (and even less in the unelected Elon Musk).

Train Derails At Burket

BURKET -ÊTrain traffic is reduced and moving slowly through Burket after a derailment caused significant damage to railroad tracks Tuesday evening. Around 8:16 p.m.Tuesday, a bulk train car lost its rear wheel assembly, including the four back wheels and axles, on the railroad tracks at Burket. The back of the train car, which sustained significant damage, dragged, causing damage to the rails and ties of the track for at least a half mile. The car, which previously carried calcium powder, was empty at the time of the derailment. "I don't know why it derailed, it is a rare failure," said Burket Fire Chief Kevin McSherry."We are very lucky it was the rear set of wheels that came off." When the wheels came off the car, the train came apart, but the car did not turn over. The wheels flew off to the side, barely missing Powell's Tire Co.on Walnut Street next to the tracks. "It very well could have gone through the wall of the business," said McSherry.

Beavers reportedly entered The Cutting Edge around 9 a.m.with a sawed-off rifle and knife Monday, tied up four female employees, sexually assaulted one and cut another before reportedly committing suicide.

Hepler was pinned in the corner by the animal and it "kept going at him," said Kosciusko County Sheriff Al Rovenstine.A 911 call regarding the incident came into the sheriff's department at 3:58 p.m.Saturday.

Fairlane Sewer Project Under Way

For the next two months workers will replace sanitary sewer lines in the area, as well as repair force mains and add new back-up pumps for the sewer system. "Over the years there has been settling on the ground because (this neighborhood) is so close to the lake, and it's not all settling uniformly," Wastewater Treatment Utility Department Head Dave Henderson said."We get in there and clean it up." The $116,375 project is being completed by Everest Excavating LLC of Warsaw. Until completion, Henderson said there will be restricted one-lane traffic in the area, which is close to Lakeview Middle School. "When it comes to traffic, we'll try and keep it moving during the day, and we'll open (the roads) back up at night to the best of our ability.
