Letters to the Editor 05-02-2001

- Congress - KLS Says Thanks - Special Olympics - Hope For The Future Congress Editor, Times-Union: On Friday, April 27, you published a letter from Mr.Michael L.Stevens which lamented the fact that in our president's first 100 days he did a lot of yap, yap, and that he had not given him the tax break he promised in his campaign.Obviously Mr.Stevens must not understand how our federal government operates. The president is not a dictator, nor do I ever want him to be.Congress is the lawmaking body. The president can only recommend and push for changes, but the Congress must actually enact the laws.Get on the members of Congress to enact the changes you want which the president is asking for and trying to get for us.

County BZA Approves Zoning For Home-Based Business

Even neighbors of 15 years can find themselves in disagreements from time to time. Tuesday, Ernest Kuhns found his neighbor Rick Cox in a slight disagreement with him over his home-based business. Kuhns petitioned the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals for an exception for a home-based business to build storage barns and cabins in an agricultural district.Monday, plan commission hearing officer Vic Virgil had approved the petition with conditions, but his decision was appealed to the full zoning board Tuesday. The property is on the south side of CR 750N and 525 feet west of CR 800W in Etna Township. According to the zoning board's staff comments, Kuhns owns 12.24 acres in a fairly isolated agricultural area.Plans call for the construction of a building approximately 50 feet by 100 feet to accommodate the business.Staff recommended any materials be stored either inside buildings or in a screened area behind the buildings.

Zoners Turn Down Request To Open Lake Restaurant

The owners of Pie-Eyed Petey's Pelican Bay may not get their restaurant after all. Tuesday, the Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals denied Roy and Barb Hamer's petition for an exception to change a non-conforming use to put in restaurant facilities at the marina. The petitioners planned to operate the restaurant instead of selling new and used boats at the marina. The property is in a residential district on the north side of EMS T16 Lane in Tippecanoe Township. The property formerly was operated as Plaza Marina and Precision Marine. The board denied the petition by a vote of three to two. Attorney Richard Helm, representing the petitioners, said no decision on whether to appeal the decision has been made. Helm told the board boat sales would be eliminated entirely.Small parts for boats - such as spark plugs - would be sold and a mechanic would be on hand to help boaters install the small parts. But no more than three boats would be left outside.

Atwood Recyclers filed suit Sept.26 claiming Baker and another defendant, Robert Grindle, were attempting to move the by-products.A temporary injunction was filed in Kosciusko Circuit Court. On Thursday, Circuit Court Judge Rex Reed ordered the property turned over to Atwood recyclers, which placed an approximate value of $25,000 on the tires.
