Warsaw Closes Gap On Goshen

Could this be the year? Andy Lewis is asked. Could it be? Could Warsaw's tennis team finally overtake Goshen? Warsaw's head coach stayed low-key, didn't issue any verbal jabs."I think," Lewis said, "we have a chance." Goshen has knocked Warsaw out of the last three regionals.Warsaw placed second in the Northern Lakes Conference last season; that's because Goshen beat the Tigers out for first. Now Warsaw is loaded. And the Tigers have the Redskins lined up in their sights. Lewis is optimistic for three reasons: Craig Harman, Ryan Van Puffelen and Peter Anders. They are three singles players he will match up with anyone. Harman and Van Puffelen return to their first and second slots in Warsaw's singles lineup.Pete Hake and Dan Benyousky could vie for the third singles spot, but they will have competiton from Anders. Anders was a bonus Lewis received this summer.

Warsaw Tennis Players Fight For Positions

Warsaw boys tennis coach Andy Lewis expects to face a dilemma in September. He played in a 10-0 mixed doubles league this summer, the most competitive mixed doubles league in the state. His partner was Sally Smithley, and even though he never had been paired with her before, they went undefeated. The next step is Indianapolis, where Smithley and Lewis would compete against players from four other states -ÊWisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and West Virginia - in September for the right to go to the nationals. The dilemma? "I think (Warsaw) has a match then," Lewis said. Lewis will decide what to do when the time comes. Until then, he focuses on Warsaw tennis. The story for Warsaw tennis the last five years has been this: good regular season, finish first or second in the Northern Lakes Conference, win sectional, lose at regional to Goshen.

- Doctors - More To Life - War On Drugs - Community Heroes Doctors Editor, Times-Union: I think it is time to make the public fully aware of what is going on in the medical field. It may be news to some that physicians are no longer allowed to practice medicine but are simply told what to do by the state, insurance companies, corporations and even nursing homes and hospitals. With sickening regularity we are being told that the drugs that we prescribe are not acceptable. This is supposedly on "rational" grounds, but really it has more to do with large organizations buying bulk and often, as in the case of the drug discount game, getting actual kickbacks from drug companies.

Automakers Have Some Serious Woes

Delphi Corp.is the big automotive-related company that filed for bankruptcy this past week. Also this week, General Motors, the company that spun off Delphi in 1999, announced huge third-quarter losses. It's fascinating to me to read about these companies and how they deal with their financial woes. Take Delphi, for example. The Troy, Mich., based company employs 14,700 workers in Michigan. The Delphi plant in Kokomo employs 5,500 and one in Anderson employs 1,000. They are the nation's largest automotive parts supplier. They make everything from brakes to radios. And while the rumors were flying prior to Delphi's bankruptcy filing, the company sweetened the pot for its top executives. Prior to the filing, severance packages for Delphi's white-collar employees were capped at 12 months of pay.But voila, now Delphi's top executives are eligible for up to 18 months of pay and some of their regular bonus.

"I believe we can't go wrong if we make meeting the needs of our young people the number one priority," Hagg said.He also stressed the importance of fiscal responsibility and teaching children strong values. Hearn, who is the mother of three Warsaw graduates, said as a school psychologist she wants to improve communication between parents and the schools and get parents more involved in their children's education. Warsaw Community School Corporation Superintendent Dave McGuire was present at Monday night's school board meeting, but not for long. After hearing Warsaw School Board President Ron Yeiter announce that the investigation of McGuire's performance did not involve any criminal matters, McGuire stood up, quietly left the room and did not return. "The investigation is still pending," said Yeiter during the meeting."(McGuire's) contract is still pending." The meeting continued without McGuire and his absence was not discussed by the board or the public. "I think maybe (McGuire) felt uneasy sitting in on the meeting," said Yeiter after the meeting adjourned."The investigation is still pending and the negotiations are going on right now.We hope to get this resolved."
