'Brill's Content' Got A Little Carried Away

When the promotional material for "Content" magazine came across my desk, I was thrilled. A new magazine devoted to a becoming a watchdog of the media, a consumer guide for people who watch and read the news.Pointing out the foibles of the press.Exposing the biased, the unethical, the slipshod and the inaccurate. I signed up for a subscription.I couldn't wait. I got the first copy this week, but I already knew what was in it because it was in the news since last week when the first copies were available. The editor and publisher is Steven Brill. Brill, at age 28, founded the monthly magazine "American Lawyer."Later he started "Court TV."He recently sold his interest in that venture to Time Warner for $20 million, according to Associated Press reports. The magazine arrived with the title "Brill's Content" on the front. That was different than the original "Content" title in the promotional material.

Rhodes To Coach McDonald's All-Americans

His career already full of accomplishments and accolades, come March, former Warsaw Community High School varsity boys basketball coach Al Rhodes will get to do something even he has never done. Rhodes, who spent 22 years as Warsaw's head coach, turning it into one of the elite high school boys programs in the state, has been selected to coach the West Team in the 28th annual McDonald's All-American Boys High School Basketball game. "It's a wonderful opportunity," said Rhodes, now in his second season at Logansport High School, during a phone conversation Thursday afternoon."Pretty much for me it's the only thing I haven't done as a high school coach. It's the biggest high school all-star game there is and I'm very excited." The game will be played March 30 at the Joyce Center at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend. The fourth annual girls game will start at 5:30 p.m.and will be televised the next day on ESPN2 at 5 p.m.

It's Tough To Migrate To The U.S.

I suppose I should weigh in the issue of immigration since that seems to be the hot issue of the day. I wonder who gets to decide what the hot issue is. I mean, is immigration a bigger problem now than it was in 2005? 2000? 1990? 1980? I seem to remember immigration being a big issue during Reagan's presidency. But why all the attention on it now? Sometimes I think our government officials try to divert our attention from other issues. I think they'd rather have the media doing stories on immigration instead of the Iraq war, gas prices, the deficit, nukes in Iran, Hamas vs.Israel or a whole list of other issues. But since immigration is the hot issue, here's my two cents. Seems to me part of the problem is the degree of difficulty involved in becoming a U.S.citizen. Looks to me like immigration laws were written to discourage people from coming here.

Pitt Runs Activity Tent 'For The Last Year'

Ami Pitt of Warsaw has coordinated pageants, entertainment, contests and competitions in the activity tent during fair week for nine years. She says this year is her last, but she's been saying that for a couple of years. "Replacements have been found," Pitt said Thursday."My daughter, Sarah, activity tent coordinator-in-training, will be a big help this year." Pitt and her daughters basically camp out all week in the activity tent, yet manage to stay behind the scenes seeing that all events run smooth. She said her children are involved in 4-H this year and already forsees complications running from one side of the fairgrounds to the other all week. This year's fair is July 17 through 23. Events begin Sunday, July 17 with a gospel sing at 6 p.m. There are two pageants Monday, July 18, followed by the senior talent contest.

Manchester Students To Build Habitat House Over Spring Break

NORTH MANCHESTER - Though to many it means sunny skies and sandy beaches, a group of Manchester College students will build their spring break memories with hammers and nails. Under the guidance of 25-year professor Brad Yoder, nearly 20 Manchester College students, including Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate Sara Kerkhoff, will leave Saturday and spend a week in Mississippi working for Habitat For Humanity. While in Meridian, a town of 40,000 located an hour east of state capital Jackson, the group will do everything in building the house except pour the foundation and work with the electrical and plumbing. "The first morning we'll put up the exterior walls and work on the roof structure," Yoder said."After the first day, basically, the structure of the house will be there." According to Yoder, Habitat For Humanity houses are generally 1,000-square-foot houses with two or three bedrooms.

The Penalty Box: Disrespect Card Is Overplayed

There are a few basic facts we know about successful people. They are driven to success.

Irish Title Hopes Dashed

SOUTH BEND - It was an emotional roller coaster ride for Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz. And it only took a matter of seconds. When Autry Denson ran a punt back 80 yards Saturday against Ohio State and cut the Buckeye lead from 29-16 to 29-22 with 3:35 left in the game, the Irish mentor was as excited as he has been in his 11-year tenure with the team. But when the play was called back because of a holding call on Ty Goode at the beginning of the amazing run, he was probably as low as he has ever been. "When Autry Denson ran the punt back, I don't know when I have been more excited," Holtz said."When it was called back, all chances of winning the game were over. The better football team won this game, make no mistake about it." When Denson was celebrating in the end zone with his teammates, Holtz took a look down the field for penalty flags; he saw none.He took a second look a few seconds later and saw the yellow hanky lying on the 20-yard line.

Wawasee Dethroned As Regional Champs

BREMEN - A lot has changed in a year's time for Alysha Aalbregtse and the Wawasee girls track team. Aalbregtse, who led Wawasee to a regional team title last year by winning the 100 and 300 hurdles, has been slowed by an injury this season and really has been back for only a month. While still getting back into shape, Aalbregtse finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles. Both performances were good enough to advance Aalbregtse to the state meet on June 7. "I am happy I qualified, and that is my main goal," Aalbregtse said."It was kind of upsetting that I didn't repeat, but that is expected because this is my sixth or seventh meet (back).I am on my way back.

No. 3 Tippecanoe Valley Falls To No. 1 Chatard In Sectional Opener

After weeks of speculation, opinions and everything in between, all that was left on Friday night was for the No. 3 ranked Tippecanoe Valley Vikings to take on the No. 1 ranked Indianapolis Bishop Chatard Trojans in the opening round of 3A Sectional 28 in Indy. While Valley was able to start off hot on the defensive side, early turnovers doomed the Vikings in a 40-7 loss.

Tiger Golfers Roll On To Regional

Bob Turner was a worried man yesterday, especially from noon to one. For starters, golf scores were rolling in, and he was about to learn his team had shot a 205 on the front nine at Rozella Ford. They hadn't been above 200 since mid-August on their home course, and here in Monday's sectional, they were picking the worst time to regress. If Turner wanted to worry even more, all he had to do was look at the scores of two East Noble players.East Noble's top two golfers, Sarah Henney and Natalie Cook, shot a combined 81 after nine holes.Warsaw's top two, Tricia Suchecki and Amy Landis, shot a combined 105. But after 3 p.m., Turner was a relaxed man who finally breathed a sigh of relief. The goal is to be in the top three teams, and his team easily made it.

Manchester Beats Whitko 36-6 To Advance To Sectional Semis

Planners Consider Ind. 15 Rezoning

The Warsaw Plan Commission considered three items Monday, including a rezoning of 134 acres north of Petro Drive to and bordered on the east by Ind.15N and the Tippecanoe River. Currently, three parcels are zoned I-2 or light industrial.Commercial use to the south indicates the best use of the property may be C-3, arterial commercial, said city planner Jeff Noffsinger, who initiated the proposal. Noffsinger said he wanted to be proactive regarding the rezoning, rather than reactive. The three properties are owned by Petro Family LLC, the John R.Nye Trust, with Alfred and Marilyn Brandt as trustees and Unitechind Inc. It was noted by commission president Joe Thallemer that a large, long-established blue heron rookery is near the parcels, along the Tippecanoe River. He noted the change to a C-3 zoning would be a little less obtrusive to the birds. In other business, the board approved two vacation-of-public-way requests.
