- Chapman Lake Success - Wonderful Concert - Government Efficiency Chapman Lake Success Editor, Times-Union: Volunteer organizations have many members who participate only because it is their desire that the group succeed and continue on the right track toward whatever goal they have set together. Most seek and want no recognition for what they do.Their only desire is to contribute to a successful venture. This year, at Chapman Lake, there were an abundance of volunteers who stepped forward to assist us when the going got tough July 4th prior to the annual fireworks display, and, again, afterward when we needed to do some things we had not planned to do and for which we were not prepared.

Triton Looks To Rebuild After Recent Success

BOURBON - Triton boys head basketball coach Mike McBride isn't afraid of the word "rebuilding."Most high school programs go through it.Especially 1A schools like Triton. "I think we're doing some rebuilding right now.You can't say we're reloading," said McBride."But we do have some good kids to try and rebuild with." Of the 10 players listed on the 2004-2005 Trojan roster, only two are seniors. "We're very young right now.Last year we graduated five seniors from a team that won 13 games. The year before we graduated five seniors from a team that won 14 games," Gone from last year's squad are departed seniors Todd Blackford, Josh Moore, Braxton Barton and Kyle Bell. That group comprised Triton's four leading scorers with Blackford leading the team at 16.3 points per game. Blackford and Co.led the Trojans to last year's sectional final before falling 64-61 to Argos.

Tiger Spikers Take Title

COLUMBIA CITY - For the first time in several seasons, Warsaw appeared to have some challenge in the championship match of the Columbia City Volleyball Sectional Saturday. Or so it seemed. The host Eagles entered the title game with an impressive 25-7 record this year, and had been playing their best volleyball of the season since a close loss to Warsaw in the regular season. Columbia City also had an impressive win over Tippecanoe Valley in the semifinals, and the championship was in the Eagles' home gym.Everything pointed to a highly contested match. Or so it seemed. Warsaw came out hitting on all cylinders and won the first game 15-2 behind 11 consecutive points on the serve of senior Sarah Calhoun. The second game was more of what everybody had expected, but the Tigers still came out on top 15-8 and won their eighth straight sectional title.

Warriors Cruise Past Elkhart Memorial 83-64

SYRACUSE -ÊMany people think the Wawasee girls basketball is made up of one player -ÊShanna Zolman. The Warriors gave those people something more to think about Friday when two other players scored in double figures and Wawasee handed Elkhart Memorial its first loss of the season, 83-64. Although Zolman led the team by scoring 29 points with 10 assists, six rebounds and five steals, Jessica Leach and Meagan Wallen added 15 points each for the Wawasee squad. "We've been looking for others to step up and score," said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman."There's a lot of hype around Shanna because she scores a lot of points. We are starting to come along and show that others can score as well. "It's good to have other players in double figures. That helps take some of the pressure off Shanna and helps our offense." Wawasee jumped out to an early lead after Zolman netted five straight points in the first quarter.

Warsaw Girls Use Size Advantage Inside

NORTH MANCHESTER - It was a game both Manchester and Warsaw needed. The Tigers, having not played much in the past couple of weeks because of postponed games, wanted to just get a game under their belts before finishing up the season with a tough stretch that includes three key Northern Lakes Conference teams. The Squires, having enjoyed a resurgence this season with a 10-4 mark, wanted to see how they would stack up facing probably their toughest team so far this year. Both teams got pretty much what they wanted. Warsaw shook off the rust as well as Manchester, 59-43, but the Squires showed that they are better than in past years and stayed right with the Tigers for three quarters.

Warsaw Wears Wawasee Down

SYRACUSE - It wasn't that Warsaw got hot at the right time.It was more like lukewarm. Both teams went through stretches in this game where things weren't falling, but in the fourth, Warsaw put enough together to produce a big Northern Lakes Conference win over Wawasee, 47-43, Saturday. The win puts the Tigers (11-5) at 4-0 in the NLC and sets up a big showdown Tuesday with No.12 NorthWood for the conference title. After trailing by six at halftime, the Warriors stepped it up on defense and eventually tied the score at 31 entering the fourth quarter.Baskets by Tiffany Ross and Sam Wideman gave the Tigers the lead 35-31 to begin the quarter, but Warsaw spent the rest of the frame struggling to put the Warriors away, hitting on only 4 of 10 free throws. But the Warriors spent the fourth just struggling.Wawasee made only 2 of 15 shots, including 0 of 6 from inside the three-point arc.

Triton Hangs On For Win Over Whitko

Bourbon - Early it looked as though Friday's boys basketball game between the Whitko Wildcats and the Triton Trojans would be less than riveting. That quickly changed as both teams battled tooth and nail for four quarters. Triton held the lead for most of the game but lost it late in the fourth quarter. The Trojans were able to charge back and recapture the lead for good as they held on for a 46-45 win. The game started off slowly as both teams traded early baskets with Whitko's Jeff Martin and Triton's Brandon Zeider scoring for their respective teams. Both teams then went on a scoring drought for the next three minutes until the Wildcats' Ben Ryan broke the tie with a jumper. After Ryan's basket, the Trojans quickly stormed back with a 14-2 run that lasted until the opening moments of the second quarter.Triton was led early by senior Matt Savill, who had nine first-half points, giving his team 24-16 lead at the half.

Valley Vikings Win Third Straight Sectional Title

FORT WAYNE -Ê"These girls have a goal in mind," said Tippecanoe Valley coach Gary Teel."They want to finish the season playing in Indianapolis. We're on our way." The Vikings moved one step closer to Indianapolis Saturday by winning the Fort Wayne Elmhurst Sectional championship game over Wayne 75-42.It was Valley's third sectional championship in a row. "It never gets old," said Teel."One of our goals was to win the sectional, and the girls have worked very hard to get here." The Vikings took control of the game early and never looked back. Rebekah Parker scored the first two baskets of the game, and Caty Patterson followed with a score of her own to go up 6-0 with 6:21 left in the first frame. Two straight baskets by Wayne's Kelsey Helmuth cut Valley's lead to two, 6-4, but that was as close as the Generals were all game. Patterson, Kara Kramer, Parker, Abby Shafer and Heather Rathbun orchestrated a 10-0 Viking run to put Valley up 16-4.

Manchester Baseball Team Belts Wawasee 12-2

NORTH MANCHESTER -ÊManchester baseball coach Jack Rupley thought his team started the season on the right foot. The Squires won their home opener over Wawasee Thursday night in five innings, 12-2. "I think we did OK," said Rupley."We made a few mistakes, first-game jitters. But I thought we put the bat on the ball pretty well." After holding Wawasee scoreless the in the top of the first, Manchester's offense went to work. Wawasee walked Manchester's first three batters, Anthony Sorg, Drew Walters and Klint Rupley, to load the bases. Then an error on a ball hit by Jon Gratz sent all three home. Manchester held the Warriors scoreless again in the top of the second inning and continued the offensive assault in the bottom of the inning.

Jason Jarrett Finishes 12th At Michigan

BROOKLYN, MI - After five races and a lengthy rain delay Saturday, 25-year-old ML Motorsports driver Jason Jarrett and his Warsaw-based stock car team got rid of the monkey on their back. Having not finished a race since his first national-level win on June 2, Jarrett qualified fourth for Saturday's ARCA RE/MAX Series Michigan 200 and finished 12th, stuffing a 4-foot purple gorilla in the car for good luck prior to the race. It wasn't a win, but for the third-generation driver and his team it was a step in the right direction.

Panthers Run Roughshod Over Wawasee

NAPPANEE -ÊA struggling Wawasee defense allowed a strong NorthWood offense to score 53 points, giving the Panthers a homecoming victory and their second Northern Lakes Conference win of the season Friday night. After Wawasee's football team went three and out on the first drive of the game, NorthWood wasted no time in scoring its first touchdown of the evening. The Panthers moved the ball 42 yards in 53 seconds to score the first points of the game with 8:57 left in the first quarter.Jason Brennaman ran the ball one yard for the score. The Warriors then moved the ball from their own 21-yard line to the NorthWood 24, but the Panthers refused to allow Wawasee to step into the red zone.A penalty sent the Wawasee squad back five yards, and then Tony Garl sacked Brent Doty for a 4-yard loss. After two incomplete passes, the Warriors turned the ball over to the Panthers on downs.

Hunting Preserve Causing A Stir

I have been reading with interest all the letters to the editor regarding the hunting preserve near Pierceton. First of all, let me say that I can understand a certain level of angst among neighbors of a hunting preserve. But I keep seeing things written that appear to be misleading at best and just plain wrong at worst. First of all, the neighbors keep talking about 40 acres of fenced land. That is a bold mischaracterization. Ken McIntosh, operator of Midwest Woodlots, owns 47 acres within the fenced area.He has long-term leases on another 114 acres, so the total fenced area is roughly 161 acres. McIntosh also leases an additional 3,000 acres for free range hunting. It is important to note that before McIntosh began his operation, much of that land was hunted by a number of private individuals. Opponents of the operation also say that you can use any caliber of gun at any time to hunt elk on the preserve because elk is a non-native species.

Warsaw Girls Down Concord
