Webster Beer Tent Issue Coming To A Head

Just when you thought the tap was dry, the Mermaid Festival's Beer Tent has surged back to life. Denise Beno, former Warsaw parks activities director who is organizing the tent, said that since she was unable to obtain assistance from the local area police force, she was forced to ask the federal marshals to provide security for the beer tent. The beer tent was proposed by "Nightshift Inc.," doing business as "Top Drawer Events and Catering" and signed by Beno.Permission for the tent was denied at the local level by Jerry Craig, North Webster town marshal, for "security reasons." Now Beno said she "has all her ducks in a row" and is ready for a state hearing in Indianapolis at the excise office Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Craig is planning a trip to Indianapolis to fight the beer tent. "I need this like I need a hole in the head, " said Craig. He is mainly concerned with the safety issues that arise with the location of the tent being close to a busy intersection.

Local Officials Share Hopes For New Year

A new year brings opportunity for fresh ideas, change, growth and new beginnings. This week, randomly chosen local officials were asked what they hoped the new year would bring to their departments, the county or their towns. "I know what it's bringing - a lot of changes," said Sharon Christner, clerk of the Circuit Court. Those changes will include a statewide voter registration system, new voting machines and a "new court package."She said much work will be required but in the long run, it will be worth it. The county has been really tight financially, said Avis Gunter, southern district county commissioner. For 2005, she said, she hopes the county's revenue goes up so the county doesn't have to scrimp and save and watch every penny. The county has been very conservative with its finances over the past few years to avoid the money problems other counties in the state have had.

School Board Decides Change Order Policy

After weeks of wrangling over how to approve change orders for the high school project, the Warsaw School Board voted unanimously Monday to just have the entire board approve them. As of May 30, the total amount of change orders for the project is approximately $130,000, including some of the change orders the board approved last night, according to Warsaw Chief Financial Officer Kevin Scott. Some of the change orders were add-ons, while others were subtractions from the total amount. At the May 16 school board meeting, the board voted to allow board member Dan Robinson and Warsaw Schools maintenance director Greg Schroeder to approve change orders up to $15,000.Any change orders over that amount must be brought before the full school board. But board member Deb Wiggins disagreed with the motion and investigated whether that was legal.
