Letters to the Editor 12-19-2005

- Money Talks - Gift Of Sight - Bush & Rove - Time, Politicians & Lies Money Talks Editor, Times-Union: Am I missing something? According to what I read in the Times-Union, the new Center Street "jog" is more than 20 feet less than it was supposed to be.Must be the new math.Good thing they didn't want it through the courthouse lawn. Then we would have to tear down half of the courthouse. Maybe they could hold a truck rodeo and the fastest one who backs through wins an overnight stay in downtown Warsaw.Second prize is two nights in downtown Warsaw. Or it might have taken a loop around Donnelley's, who knows? Guess money talks.

Area Plan Commission Denies Rezone Request

In several cases before the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission, local attorney Richard Helm has represented people who were petitioning for a rezoning of land from an Agricultural District to an Agricultural II District. Wednesday, Helm represented a group of people remonstrating against such a rezoning. Dewey Calhoun petitioned the commission Wednesday for a rezoning from Ag to Ag II on property on the south side of CR 200N and 1,040 feet east of CR 650E in Washington Township.Calhoun's attorney, Amber Blackford, represented him. Helm said, "Ag II is in the ordinance for a purpose." He said Calhoun was proposing a subdivision in disguise.Helm said there would be drainage problems if the APC approved the recommendation. "There are no plans to subdivide the land," Blackford said."There is not much purpose for the land." The APC voted not to approve the rezoning with a vote of 5 to 0 and one abstaining.

Silver Lake's Town Park Closer To Reality

SILVER LAKE - The town of Silver Lake is a few steps closer to finalizing plans for a town park to occupy the old Marathon Station site. Town council president Brenda Wadkins said last month the town plans to put a gazebo in the old parking lot, adding benches and a brick sidewalk to make the area a "sitting park." "Things are proceeding. We had hoped for Silver Lake Days.I don't think that's going to happen," Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter said Tuesday."We are open for ideas. These are preliminary plans so we really want input. This is the town park." Hollopeter said the town will be selling 4- by 8-inch and 8- by 8-inch bricks to the public to raise money for construction of the new park. The bricks will be engraved with whatever the buyer chooses and placed in the park. Council members discussed reasonable prices with audience members before deciding to sell the smaller bricks for $75 each and the larger bricks for $125 each.
