Editor's note: This is part of a series of interviews with World War II veterans. The articles will continue in each day's edition through Saturday's World War II Memorial Dedication and Recognition Day. As they had for 140 years, Indiana National Guardsmen prepared to go to war in 1941, mustering in response to a Presidential Executive Order, Jan.29.The 152nd Infantry gathered at the Warsaw Armory. Two members of that regiment, Wallace Huffman of Leesburg and Howard Haab of Milford, and the widow of another member, Mrs.Katie Kirkendall (wife of Fred) of Warsaw, talked about the days with the 38th (Cyclone) Division and Company L of the 152nd. They were led by two World War I veterans, Capt.Milo Snyder and Sgt.Ralph Litchenwalter; both were prepared to go another round. Huffman and Haab, both 86 now, left the processing in Fort Wayne in 1941 and headed for Camp Shelby, Miss., in April.

Analysis: Obama’s ’We’re leaving’ message trumps pledge US won’t abandon AfghanistanWASHINGTON (AP) — In President Barack Obama’s twin narratives, the United States is both leaving Afghanistan and staying there. The different messages are meant for different audiences, one at home and one away. As Obama’s brief, symbolic visit to Afghanistan on Wednesday made clear, the more important audience is American voters fed up with a war that will be in its 12th year on Election Day this fall.

Local residents take footin' to the extreme

What, exactly, would tempt someone to arise at 5:30 a.m., (that's when the water is flat) grab onto a 75-foot length of kevlar-reinforced rope, (kevlar doesn't stretch) jump into the lake wearing nothing but a wet suit and yell, "Hit it!?" The answer? Barefoot water skiing. On any given calm morning on Tippecanoe Lake one might find Bob Ragland, a captain with American Airlines, exhibiting his idea of recreation. He has become quite adept at deepwater front and back starts, one-foot fronts and backs and other advanced footin' techniques. He has attended barefoot school in Florida with the legendary world champion, Ron Scarpa. But really, why do this - at around 40 mph? Ragland offers, "It's unique. Not everbody does it. I remember when I was a kid and saw somebody footin' and thought, 'That's cool!'" Photo by Gary Nieter, Times-Union

Physical Minutemen Outlast Warriors

DUNLAP - Jerry Davis is a quick learner. Two-thirds of the way into his first season Davis understands his new conference pretty well.He knows that you have to play physical in the Northern Lakes Conference. Last night his Wawasee Warriors couldn't withstand the physical pressure of the Concord Minutemen, losing 65-56. "The difference in the ball game was their physicalness under the boards and inside," he said."It made it very difficult for us to post up inside, and once we did, to do anything positive. "They did an excellent job of working the boards and going to the boards hard.We didn't block out the way that I would have liked. As physical as the NLC is, you have to be physical back or you're gonna be in trouble." The Warriors were down by 14 entering the fourth quarter, then finally started to make a run.
