Small Steps Lead To Whitko Win
SOUTH WHITLEY - Baby steps.Baby steps. Baby steps, though small, can take you a long way and help you improve over time. "At the beginning of the season," said Whitko coach Rachelle McCammon, "we started taking baby steps and learning how to win." In a battle of area schools, Whitko kept taking its baby steps to defeat Wawasee 15-3, 15-8 in volleyball action Tuesday night. Whitko scored the first point of game one but then found itself behind 2-1 for several possessions.After several changes in possession, Whitko quickly took a 6-2 lead after nailing four straight points. However, Wawasee did not go down easily.The Warriors did not allow Whitko to score more than three points in a row for the rest of the game. Although the Warriors kept Whitko from scoring easily, Wawasee failed to score points and eventually fell 15-3. "Our girls showed poise and continued to play hard no matter what the score," said Wawasee coach Jason Fleming.

County Courts Soy Processing Plant
The Louis Dreyfus Corp.is one of the world's oldest and largest merchandizers of grains and oilseeds. Monday the company held an informational meeting about its proposal to build a $100 million soybean processing plant southwest of Claypool. The plant is just phase one of a three-step process that could eventually develop into an agro-industrial park, including a biodiesel plant and ethanol plant. "You only see something like this happen once in your lifetime," said Don Zolman of Zolman Farms about the facility."The improvement in markets is going to be dramatic for all area producers.It's a great thing for the community, too. "I dont' think we can really quantify what's going to happen to that community over the next 10 to 15 years." Once the facility, if it's built in Kosciusko County, is operational, 60 to 100 high-quality jobs will be available.The employees are going to want to live near where they work.

Hickory Creek Residents Moved To Prairie View
It's both a happy ending and a new beginning for residents of Hickory Creek and the financially strapped Prairie View Nursing Home. Thursday the remaining 19 Hickory Creek residents moved into their own wing of the Prairie Street facility. In February, Hickory Creek administrator Katherine Pearson received word that Omega Health Care was closing the facility because of structural concerns about the building. The Omega folks are geared toward investment and own the property.Extendacare ran the business. When Extendacare dissolved more than a year ago, Atrium Living Centers, Indianapolis, took over management. Enter Jeff Carroll, Grace Village Retirement Community administrator, who learned of the dilemma while driving down Center Street where poster-waving Hickory Creek staffers and relatives of residents stood for days in the cold. "I thought about it and prayed about it," Carroll said when he learned about the residents' plight.

Funds For College Available Locally
Every year, thousands of high school seniors across the country compete for financial assistance to attend the college of their choice. Every year, thousands of dollars are never claimed. Kosciusko County alone has approximately $250,000 a year to offer its local students. "I'm just amazed at the level of support that our local community gives.We're just a very blessed community," Warsaw Community High School Guidance Counselor Rick Swaim said. The resources to find and claim that money are bountiful, if the student makes an effort.Those students who do make an effort do not always make it as early as they should, however. Swaim said students should begin looking for scholarships the second semester of their junior year at the earliest.Preferably, seniors need to start their search at the beginning of their senior year, he said. Information on scholarships, colleges and admissions is available through the WCHS guidance office or library.
