Syracuse Postpones Drainage Meeting With DNR

SYRACUSE - A meeting with Department of Natural Resources officials to discuss drainage issues around the Syracuse Community Center has been postponed. The drainage plan, drawn up for the Syracuse Town Council by Indanapolis engineering firm Greeley and Hansen, was slated to be presented before the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Sept.5. But the council nixed that idea Tuesday at their regular meeting. Council members said they didn't have ample time to review the drainage plans and were opposed to portions of them. The council brought up their opposition to the plan when Town Manager Brian Redshaw presented the council with the bids for the engineering of the project. The goal of the project, Redshaw said, is to design a storm water drainage system the new community center can drain into.

Tigers Break Through Vs. Raiders

A little home cooking was just what Warsaw needed. With the homecoming crowd at Fisher Field cheering them on, the Tigers broke several uncomfortable streaks Friday with their first win of the season, 24-22, over Northridge. • Derrick Duncan's first-quarter touchdown broke a 13-quarter scoreless streak. • The win was the first in seven games for the Tigers, dating back to last season. • The win was the first at home in 10 games for the Tigers, dating back two seasons. • Warsaw quarterback P.J.Wiley ran for 154 yards, the first Tiger back over 100 yards since Tony Sanson in 1993. "Every reason from the middle of July until this point, they could have bagged it," Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said."They were hearing it from everybody, from people in the school to people in the community.

Kari Wortinger Works Magic On Norwood Course

HUNTINGTON - The first time Kari Wortinger played Norwood Golf Course in Huntington, she shot a 90. So no one would blame her if she wasn't too happy when the switch was made this year to move the Huntington Girls Golf Regional from LaFontaine to Norwood. But the way Wortinger is playing, it didn't matter. Wortinger rode a scoring front nine to a final score of 80 (3-over par) and ultimately a trip to the state finals Saturday and Oct.11 at Prestwick Country Club in Avon. Rebecca Rogers of Homestead was medalist with a 79, just one stroke ahead of Wortinger.Warsaw's team finished in seventh place out of eight schools. With her round, Wortinger beat her career-best of 81 shot at Black Squirrel in Goshen.Wortinger shot a 1-under 38 on the front nine and battled through a stretch of five straight bogeys on the back nine to finish with a 42 on the back side and shaved 10 strokes off her previous outing at Norwood.

There's No More Justice In Hate Crime Legislation

President Clinton is likely to veto a budget bill funding the Justice Department because Congress failed to include his hate crime legislation. Democrat Sen.Ted Kennedy says the Republicans in Congress are racially insensitive for not including the provision. I must be racially insensitive, too, because I think hate crime legislation is redundant. President Clinton wants to make it a federal crime to do harm to someone if it is racially motivated. The big question for me is why the victim is somehow more dead or injured if the attack is based on race, color or creed. If you kill someone, it's murder.Does it really matter what motivated you? Isn't all murder hateful? Any motive other than self-defense will land you in prison for a long time, so I guess I don't see what the point of hate crime legislation really is. More than anything, though, I think hate crime laws are driven by political correctness.
