Grace To Build 'Orthopedic Capital Center'

WINONA LAKE - Beginning in April, Grace College plans to begin construction of a $9.1 million complex on Wooster Road. An announcement of the Orthopedic Capital Center was made earlier this month, with school officials estimating a 12-month construction plan on the north side of its campus, ending in May 2007. The college hopes the first event inside the building will be the 2007 Spring graduation commencement. "It's wonderful for the campus," Grace College President Dr.Ronald Manahan said."And it's going to be a great asset to the community." The projected 60,000-square-foot center, with a 2,800 person capacity, will be used for Grace chapel and sporting events as well as local concerts, business seminars and trade shows. Six meeting rooms will be located inside the building, the largest seating 200 people.Catering services, wireless Internet capabilities and an adjustable stage inside the gymnasium/auditorium also will be available.

Perine settled on the town site in 1834, and after the town was surveyed was the first hotel keeper. The survey was made by James R.  McCord, William Felkner and a Mr. Stewart. Van Buren township was organized a short time later than Milford by William Felkner, who settled in that township in March 1833. Felkner erected the first log school house in 1835 and the first barn in 1836.

Syracuse Chamber Names New Board Members

SYRACUSE -ÊNew board members to the Syracuse-Wawasee Chamber of Commerce were announced Wednesday by chamber director Shelly Bickel. The new members are Bonnie Martin, Gene Hill, Randy Hollon and Brian Rensberger.Retiring board members include Joyce Selvey, Mark Stock, Steve Ehle, Don Tatman and Don Strouse. McIntosh Outlines Plan To Boost State's Economy

According to a recent Indianapolis news channel poll, Republican gubernatorial candidate David McIntosh leads by 30 points over his contenders. Part of that is due to name recognition. McIntosh served in Congress, representing the Sixth District, from 1994 to 2000, when the Republicans took over Congress.He previously worked with former Vice President Dan Quayle and under President Ronald Reagan in the Justice Department. Now, as the leading contender for Indiana's governorship, McIntosh is touring the state focusing on three messages - economic development, property tax concerns and making Indiana the premier state in implementing President George W.Bush's faith-based initiative.

Knox Endorses Whitaker During Televised Forum

Kosciusko County's first televised political forum took a quick twist Thursday night when one of the candidates stepped up and endorsed another. Of the three candidates participating in VSP-TV's sheriff candidate forum, Wally Knox announced minutes before the live show that he would endorse Detective Sgt.Sam Whitaker. Knox made the announcement during opening statements in the forum and then stepped aside, leaving Whitaker and Lt.Steve Knispel to discuss issues. After the endorsement, Whitaker and Knox shook hands, but neither Knispel nor Whitaker commented on the endorsement during the forum. Knox said afterward he began rethinking his campaign three weeks ago and made the decision after meeting with Whitaker several times. In exchange for the endorsement, Whitaker said he would employ Knox within the department if elected.Exactly what the position might be has not been determined, both candidates said.

Whitko HS Gets New Principal

PIERCETON - Jim Suding is Whitko High School's new principal, effective July 1. The Whitko Community School Corp.Board of School Trustees approved Suding's employment Tuesday at a special hearing and approved the teachers' contract agreement with Whitko Classroom Teachers' Association for the 2003-05 school years. After being approved as new principal, Suding said he was happy to be at Whitko and excited about getting started."I'm looking forward to it," he said. Suding received both his bachelor's and master's degrees at Ball State University.He taught social studies and coached football, wrestling and girls' track at Muncie Central High School for 11 years.He also served as assistant principal at Muncie Central for eight years.Before coming to Whitko, he was the principal at Yorktown for six years.

Milford Deputy Scores High At Law Academy

MILFORD - The small town of Milford recently received confirmation of what it already knew - small town or not, Barney Fife has no place on its police officer roster. Deputy Marshall James Marshall recently returned from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and to the Milford Police Department's pleasure, finished in the top 5 percent of his class academically. Marshall, a first-year officer and former reservist, attended the academy as all full-time police officers must during his first full year of service.During his time at the academy, he completed 16 different subject area tests and maintained a grade point average of 97.1 percent.The highest scoring officer at the academy and No.1 in the class had a GPA of 98 percent, less than 1 percent higher than Marshall's.

WCS Gathers Info On Reopening Claypool

As Warsaw Schools continues to look at the future of Claypool Elementary School, incoming Superintendent Dr.Robert Haworth presented the school board with a list of the related issues being studied for CES to open. Haworth said they are trying to gather as much information as possible for the school board to make a decision on the school.That information includes a survey sent out to find out how many parents want their students to attend Claypool.The surveys are not due until April 28, but only half of the surveys sent out have been returned.About 293 surveys were sent out. "We need parents, guardians to respond to those surveys if they haven't," Haworth said. Claypool, along with Silver Lake and Atwood schools, were closed at the end of the 2003-04 school year.The Atwood real estate is set to be auctioned off Saturday at noon, while the design charette for Silver Lake is Saturday from 8:15 a.m.to 5 p.m.at the school.
