Tigers Claw Back To Beat No. 9 McCutcheon

HUNTINGTON - In an underdog role, Warsaw's varsity volleyball team used nine lives to come from behind and edge No.9 McCutcheon 15-13, 8-15, 17-15 in the semifinal round of the Huntington North Regional Saturday. "You couldn't ask for a better game," second-year Warsaw coach Tanya Coon said."The kids showed mental toughness. They were down the entire game, but they kept coming back and they all stepped up when they need to." The win improved Warsaw's overall season record to 26-8; McCutcheon finished its season at 30-7. McCutcheon jumped out to a 7-0 lead on the serving of senior Kathy Asay - the Mavericks' first server of the game. The Tigers came right back and got three points off the serving of sophomore Nicole DeFord, but McCutcheon then took leads of 11-4 and 13-6 and had the Tigers on the ropes. And that's when things got exiting.

Grace Women Win Hoops Tournament

WINONA LAKE - It's not often that a team can shoot 28 percent from the field and still pull out a win.But the Grace College women's basketball team did precisely that Saturday, defeating Concordia (MI) 58-42 to win the Grace Tournament Championship. Tournament MVP Amber Riffell finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for back-to-back double-doubles and the Lancer defense held Concordia to just 26 percent shooting. As well, Grace held a 52-38 rebound advantage, including 23 offensive boards that gave the Lancers opportunities to make up for its poor shooting. Grace never trailed in the game and had numerous chances to put Concordia away but the offensive struggles kept the Cardinals alive. At one point, Grace led 46-35 with just over six minutes to play, but the Lancers went cold and the Cardinals closed to within five points. However, Grace scored its final 10 points from the free-throw line as Concordia was forced to foul to try to get back into the game.

WHA Untangles Red Tape Around Remedies Grant

Tuesday, Kosciusko County thought it was going to have to pay $8,465 back to the Indiana Housing Finance Authority for the Home Remedies Grant. But today, they no longer have to give the money back. Pam Kennedy, Warsaw Housing Authority, told the commissioners Tuesday that the grant was closed out in May and audited in August. With money so tight in Indiana, the rules are starting to change rather quickly, she said, and the housing authority has had three audits since Kennedy took over in the summer. Part of the grant provides for home rehabilitation for couples if they make no more than $38,350 in income per year. An elderly couple in Claypool were given assistance through the program whose income was $39,350 per year. But the local housing authority thought they had qualified because after deducting medical expenses, the couple made $36,067.

'Dinner With Churchill' Gives Insights Into Leader's Life

Most people would agree that Winston Churchill was respected as one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. He was more beloved than most leaders, however, because of his "enduring sense of humor and nonstop wit." Dr.Elliot Engel explained this statement and more at Thursday's "Dinner with Churchill," a fund-raiser for Kosciusko Literacy Services at Tippecanoe Lake Country Club.Engel, an English professor, author and lecturer, spoke on Charles Dickens at last year's fund-raiser. Churchill was born in 1874 into an aristocratic family of wealth and power. He began his career in the military, and was in and out of power, and popularity, until World War II, when, Engel said, "he was more important in keeping western democracy alive than anyone else....England would have fallen without Churchill's leadership." Yet, 16 days after the end of World War II, the British people removed Churchill from office and retired him as the prime minister.
