Zolman Signs Letter Of Intent For University Of Tennessee

SYRACUSE -ÊIt was just a few days ago that Wawasee coach Kem Zolman talked about how tough it was going to be to turn over daughter Shanna to another coach, but he said there was no one he would feel better about "giving" her to than University of Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. The reality of that came one step closer Wednesday afternoon when Shanna signed her national letter-of-intent to play for Tennessee at the Wawasee gym in front of family, friends, fans, and media. During the public letter signing, Shanna talked about growing up wanting to be a Volunteer. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid (to play for Tennessee)," Shanna said."I'm thankful for the opportunity to fulfill a dream." She called the Warrior fans the "best in the state" and noted, "I'm still a Lady Warrior for another year...I'm really looking forward to my senior year." Shanna seemed at ease with the crush of media and the stands full of onlookers.

Moore started the second quarter on the right foot for the Tigers, scoring the first basket at the 7:29 mark. Bremen Repeats As Sectional Champ, Wawasee And Warsaw Follow Closely

Warsaw hosted the girls swim sectional on Saturday afternoon with 11 teams competing. One thing is for sure, it didn't disappoint for drama as the lead switched hands all afternoon, and the championship came down to the last event with the Bremen Lions repeating as sectional champs. Wawasee, which led part of the afternoon finished second while Warsaw came in third. "Overall we swam incredibly well today," said Warsaw coach Terry Aukeman."We had two new school records. Our 400 relay team broke a record that had been up there for 11 years and we also set a record in the 200 (relay). They set a school record twice this year and then a third time today.

Tiger Offense Continues To Pound Opponents

While many students spent spring break basking in the sun, the Warsaw baseball team took advantage of the mild Indiana weather and hit the field for some early season action. The Tigers played their fourth game of the week against Wabash and added another mark in the win column with a 15-4 five-inning victory. Wabash struck first in the battle of the black and orange, and the Apaches scored three runs on a Brandon Nordman home run and took that 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first. However, the Tigers were prepared to attack offensively as well. After Jason Barrett reached first base on an error, Steve Siebenmorgen helped the cause with a single to put Warsaw runners on second and third.Don Kennedy stepped to the plate next and hit a double that brought both Barrett and Siebenmorgen across the plate to reduce the Wabash lead to one. Then John Leininger laced a double to bring Kennedy home and tie the score at three.

Newspapers Are A Bit Wimpy These Days

Not long ago I wrote about a general lack of civility in society these days. Everybody seems more testy. Movies are more violent and sexually graphic. We have driveby shootings, shock jocks and random acts of violence. These things were unheard of 20 years ago. But recently it dawned on me that there is one thing in society that has become more civil over the years. That is your daily newspaper. I am not sure why - maybe it's because of the litigious nature of today's America - but the newspaper is a shell of its former self when it comes to being nasty. We just don't do it anymore. In the old days, like the '30s, '40s and '50s, a newspaper could be pretty harsh in its editorial stance on an issue. Now newspapers try to be polite while making a point.I am guilty of it. I try not to step too hard on too many toes. There have been lots of times when I really wanted to let loose and rip into someone or some issue, but I didn't.

"I've been working extremely hard for this," Jason said."I told myself I would win, no matter what.I not only wanted to win, but I wanted to dominate my weight class.I kept that in my mind the whole way through. Kevin, a junior, has gotten a step closer to winning a state title each year in school. He placed fifth his freshman year, fourth his sophomore year and second this year.

Vikings' Brown hits free throw in OT for win

COLUMBIA CITY - At the time, it just seemed like a normal comment from a normal Tippecanoe Valley fan.Who would have known that this guy could see the future? As warm-ups were taking place, this fortune teller yelled out to Valley star Jeff Brown, "Free throws win ball games!" Who knew that Brown would step to the line with :00.8 left in overtime in the Columbia City sectional championship to win the game? Who knew that Brown would miss the front end of a one-and-one with 39 seconds left in regulation that could have sealed the game? Who knew Justin Waterson of Columbia City would miss a free throw with :08 seconds left in regulation that would have given the Golden Eagles a one-point lead? Finally, who knew Columbia City would get to the free throw line just six times after shooting 43 free throws the previous night, 24 in the fourth quarter, in a victory over Manchester? This man was nothing more than a prophet disguised as a Valley Viking.

Viking Baseball Team Blasts Whitko

SOUTH WHITLEY -ÊAt this point in the year, baseball coaches like to see their teams show improvement from the beginning of the season. Monday night in South Whitley, Whitko and Valley squared off and showed their coaches how far they have come. One coach was pleased, but the other was not quite as lucky. The Tippecanoe Valley Vikings showed coach Pat O'Connell the improvements they have made by defeating the Wildcats 12-4. After one inning, the Wildcats and the Vikings remained scoreless, but Valley changed that in the top of the second.Aaron Cox was on first after being hit by a pitch, and Valley had two outs when the Vikings started their rally. Matt Shilling stepped to the plate and hit a single to drive Cox home, and B.J.Cunningham laced a triple to left field to send Shilling home.Derek Eby hit a single to drive Cunningham in and give Valley a 3-0 lead over Whitko.

Warsaw Spikers Bury 'Busco, Northfield

CHURUBUSCO - Any reports of the demise of the Warsaw volleyball team were certainly premature. After returning only one starter from last year's semistate team, the Tigers came into this season with little idea of how they might fare in the upcoming campaign. But the program is alive and kicking, thank you. The new-look Tigers opened the 1997 campaign looking like the Warsaw teams of old with two convincing wins over Northfield (15-7, 15-7) and Churubusco (15-4, 15-12) Tuesday in the traditional three-way opener. Northfield beat Churbuscuo 15-8, 15-8 in the first match. Unleashing a deep, talented squad, second-year Warsaw coach Jamie Byron wasn't surprised by the early success of a relatively inexperienced team. "In the stats, it looks like we lost everything," Byron said."But we had all these girls playing JV or varsity last year, and they were playing the whole season. They didn't have to sit the bench. That experience has really paid off.

Silver Lake Patrons Send SOS To WCS

SILVER LAKE - One by one they stepped up to the microphone, pleading their case to save their elementary school. They were orderly. They were courteous. And they were passionate in their hope that Warsaw's school board would let them keep the school that has, in their words, become "the center of their community." Warsaw School Board met Monday in the gym at Silver Lake Elementary, with more than 275 patrons, Silver Lake residents and other interested citizens packing the gym. Many of the people attending wore sweat shirts that read, "Silver Lake Elementary - where the learning is fun." The board's routine business took only about 20 minutes, and part of that time superintendent Dr.Lee Harman read a prepared statement about the Community Based Planning Project. It was the recommendation in the CBPP's executive summary that students might be best served by relocating them from Silver Lake Elementary that got Silver Lake parents and patrons organized in opposition.

Harrison Teachers Nominated For Disney Awards

At 2 a.m.Thursday, Harrison Elementary School teacher Ethel Ringle was buying hot dogs at Wal-Mart. Twelve hours later, she told her third-grade students they would be taste-testing condiments on "worms."The students' reactions were "Ewwwwww!" and "Gross!" The "worms," of course, were the hot dogs Ringle boiled an hour earlier. Ringle's class is reading "How To Eat Fried Worms" and the condiment testing on the "worms" was a way for Ringle to interest her students in the book. Ringle and fellow Harrison Elementary School third-grade teacher Katie Beehler both have been nominated for the Disney Teacher Award for their creativity and success in the classroom. As the next step in the award process, both teachers must submit an application to be considered for the 2006 Disney Teacher of the Year Award.A third Harrison teacher was nominated but chose not to pursue the award further.
