Triton Advances To Finals

CULVER - Heading into the Culver Holiday Tourney, the Triton Trojans boys basketball team was looking to focus on winning its second consecutive Tourney championship. Step one would be a tough task: They would have to beat the 3-1 Caston Comets, a team they defeated in the championship game last year 44-38. The first quarter proved to be what people came to see, a tight back-and-forth game.In the quarter, there were several lead changes. After Triton tied the game at 5-5, Caston went on a quick 4-0 run to take a 9-5 lead.Caston ended up leading 11-9 after getting nice jump shots from Eric Walsh and Bo Hines. After a tight start, the Trojans began to heat up.Triton went on a 7-0 run to start the second quarter, and they took a 16-11 lead with 4:10 to play. After nearly shutting the Comets out for the first five minutes of play, the Comets finally scored on a Tim Bowyer lay-up that closed the lead to 16-13.

Letters to the Editor 05-31-2000

- Gun Issue - Accident - Leesburg Parade Gun Issue Editor, Times-Union: Clearly the nation is polarized over the inane issues of handgun registration and a 72-hour waiting period for gun show purchases.I am writing to present a reality check to the misguided sycophants who are advocating the "common sense gun legislation."Both of these initiatives constitute aggressive steps toward the "disarming of America" that Bill Clinton undoubtedly desires to leave as his legacy.

Wawasee Spikers Rally Past Triton

SYRACUSE - When Wawasee fell behind Triton 12-4 in the first game Monday, the Warrior spikers had two choices - pack it in or turn it up.Wawasee chose the latter of the two. And although the Trojans eventually won game one, 15-13, the emotion and enthusiasm that the Warriors created by making it close turned the momentum around and helped Wawasee win the next two games, 15-10, 15-12. "There were times that I thought they would just run on us.I was afraid if we went ahead and lost at that score (only 4 points), that emotionally the team wouldn't be able to rebound," Wawasee coach Jason Fleming said."We started putting things together at the end of that first game which even though we lost it showed that the momentum had changed tides." Really, it wasn't any magic formula or a change in the game plan for the Warriors; they just began to execute better, while the Trojans struggled with the rejuvenated play of Wawasee.

Zolman Signs Letter Of Intent For University Of Tennessee

SYRACUSE -ÊIt was just a few days ago that Wawasee coach Kem Zolman talked about how tough it was going to be to turn over daughter Shanna to another coach, but he said there was no one he would feel better about "giving" her to than University of Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. The reality of that came one step closer Wednesday afternoon when Shanna signed her national letter-of-intent to play for Tennessee at the Wawasee gym in front of family, friends, fans, and media. During the public letter signing, Shanna talked about growing up wanting to be a Volunteer. "It's been a dream of mine since I was a kid (to play for Tennessee)," Shanna said."I'm thankful for the opportunity to fulfill a dream." She called the Warrior fans the "best in the state" and noted, "I'm still a Lady Warrior for another year...I'm really looking forward to my senior year." Shanna seemed at ease with the crush of media and the stands full of onlookers.
