Roemer, Buyer Vote Yea On Impeachment

Kosciusko County's two representatives in Congress both voted last week to proceed with an impeachment inquiry of President William J.Clinton. The House approved the resolution 258-176, which authorized the House Judiciary Committee's investigation into allegations the president lied under oath in a deposition given in the Paula Jones sexual harassment lawsuit and then again before a federal grand jury. Rep.Tim Roemer (D-Dist.3) said that while he voted for the inquiry of possible impeachable offenses, he doesn't believe the matter justifies impeachment. "While I support proceeding with this inquiry, I do not think the allegation contained in the (Starr) report rise to the level of impeachable offenses," he said. Rep.Steve Buyer (R-Dist.5), who serves on the House Judiciary Committee, said he is saddened by the events of last week.The allegations need to be investigated and, if determined to be true, they need to be sanctioned, he said.

Billy Sunday Museum Funding A Step Closer

WINONA LAKE - Funding to establish a Billy Sunday Museum in Winona Lake passed the Indiana House Tuesday and now has only the Senate hurdle left to clear. State representative Dave Wolkins (R-Winona Lake) said today the total state budget included $500,000 as a one-time grant to turn Sunday's Winona Lake home into a state museum. "The budget will change drastically in the Senate," he said, but the Sunday museum funding "has a real good chance of passing." Wolkins said if the funding is approved, Grace College, which owns the Sunday home, will donate the home to the state and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources will oversee the museum.

Atwood Woman Stable After Beating

Charges are pending against a Warsaw man accused of beating his estranged girlfriend with a post from a canopy bed, resulting in multiple injuries to her. Tohnya L.Miner, 27, of West Main Street, Atwood, suffered several broken ribs, one broken and two fractured vertebrae and a partially collapsed lung in the Saturday evening attack.Miner ran to a neighbor's house and was taken from there to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.She was listed in stable condition this morning. Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine said a warrant will be issued for the arrest of Robert H.Moser, 23, of Warsaw. According to a KCSD report, Miner was in the shower at her residence when Moser came into the home and told her to come out.The two reportedly have a child together but have not been seeing each other for four to five months.

Petitions Submitted Against Triton Project

BOURBON - Marshall County Auditor Jan Quivey reported Monday a stack of petitions was submitted to his office Friday by Bourbon resident John Glingle. The petitions contain signatures of those opposed to a $13.85 million building renovation project for Triton Junior/Senior High School.Quivey said his office Monday was beginning the work of verifying that the signatures are valid.Since Triton School District lies partly in Kosciusko County, any signatures the Marshall County office cannot identify as belonging to a Triton school district property owner must be sent to Kosciusko County Auditor Sue Ann Mitchell.

Silver Lake Cable TV Service To Improve

SILVER LAKE - Residents will soon have more channels on their cable television service. A representative of Marcus Cable told the Silver Lake Town Council Tuesday that a new local channel, on which the town can announce meetings and events, is being added, as is the Prevue Channel, which lists programming on all channels. Also, the following channels will be added to the broadcast basic: ESPN2, Nickelodeon, Lifetime, The Learning Channel, TNT and American Movie Classics.New premium channels now available are HBO2 and HBO Family. In other business, the council signed a contract with Stafford's Solid Waste Inc.of Warsaw for trash collection for 1997. The change in servers takes effect March 1 and collection will now be on Thursdays.There will be a six-bag limit per household per week.

County Tagged For Major Moves Projects

Road construction for Kosciusko County is now officially planned. On May 18 State Reps.Bill Friend and Bill Ruppel announced the final list of Major Moves highway projects, a fully-funded program also planned for Marshall County. Included in the project is the long-awaited construction on Ind.13, Ind.15 and U.S.30.Cost for Kosciusko County construction and resurfacing alone totals to more than $22.3 million. However, along with both Friend and Ruppel, the Indiana General Assembly approved the Major Moves legislation, doubling the amount of new highway projects in the state over the next 10 years - all without raising taxes. "The projects once promised are now guaranteed to be built."said Friend. This legislation resolves huge highway funding problems that no one else, until now, has solved.
