Fact: There are approximately 250 animals at the Animal Welfare League Pet Rescue and Adoption Center. Fact: Good, healthy animals and pregnant animals are being euthanized at the Center because of overcrowding. Fact: On July 1, for example, 16 dogs were brought to the Center.

Squires Pull Away From Lowly Wabash

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Manchester Squires came into Saturday's game against Wabash playing good early-season basketball, opening their season with a win over (2A No.9) Maconaquah. Against Wabash, however, the Squires struggled, outlasting the Apaches 51-38. Manchester jumped out to an early 5-0 lead to start the game.Wabash then forced the Squires into a slow halfcourt offense for the rest of the game.At the end of the first quarter Manchester led 11-7. Not much offense was shown in the second quarter either as both teams combined for only 20 points.Manchester went into halftime with a 23-15 lead even though they were outrebounded 12-6. This kept Manchester from getting any second chance baskets.The Squires made up for that by shooting 9 of 17 from the field and holding Wabash to 7 of 16.

Plymouth Tramples Triton

BOURBON - Plymouth guard Brian Wray had 32 points.The entire Triton team had 35.The rest of the Pilgrims added 34 to trample Triton 66-35 Friday. The Trojans came out and played tough early.At the end of the first quarter Triton was down only one 13-12, but then in the second quarter Wray took control.He scored 19 points in the quarter, and Plymouth held the Trojans to nine. From then on it was just a downward slide.Triton could only manage 14 points in the second half and let Plymouth get easy baskets.

Grace College's Moats Makes Hall Of Fame

Crown College in St.Bonifacius, Minn., announced that Grace College volleyball coach Candace Moats is one of the first inductees into the Crown College Hall of Fame. Moats, who played volleyball and basketball for the Crusaders, graduated in 1984.From 1985 through 1995, she served as a coach and was a member of the physical education department.She was athletic director from 1991 through 1995. As a basketball player, Moats led the team to four straight Northern Intercollegiate Christian Conference championships, one NICC Tournament championship and three straight national championships in the National Bible College Athletic Association.She was named to the All-Conference team four times and to the All-American team three times. The volleyball teams she played for earned two conference championships and two first-place tournament finishes.She was also named to the All-Conference volleyball team three times.

Bibler Steps Down At Valley

AKRON - Scott Bibler resigned as Tippecanoe Valley's head football coach today, citing his family as the reason. Bibler, a 1982 Valley grad and a 1986 graduate of Taylor University where he played baseball for two years and football for four, was 98-68 in 16 years as the Vikings' head coach.He led Valley to a sectional championship in 1992. "It was a tough decision," said Bibler."But I had to put my family first and they're getting older and involved in more things that I want to be around for. Bibler and his wife Stephanie, have two daughters, Chelsea and Megan, who are involved in numerous extracurricular activates. "Maybe in the future I can come back and get involved in coaching again but you can't go back and be a dad again," said Bibler.

Glenn Knocks Off Triton

Editor's note: Because of a computer problem, this story did not run Saturday. WALKERTON - As Triton fans looked down at the tipoff, they had one thing on their mind: this game was a much-needed game to win.But the Triton fans didn't get their wish as the Trojans fell to Northern State Conference rival Glenn 55-53 in overtime Friday. "We weren't off to a promissing start at the beginning of the game," Triton coach Kevin O'Rourke said."Our team had a big opportunity going into this game, but we let it slip by." Midway into the first quarter, Glenn pulled out ahead leading 11-2 with nine points made by Mike Alexander and Corey Rough.The Trojans came back with Austin Unterbrink scoring six out of his total 18 points in the first quarter. "Austin did his job and that is to score points," O'Rourke said.

Squires' Shewman Stepping Down

NORTH MANCHESTER - As girls basketball coach at Manchester High School, Jody Shewman was building a dynasty. Now that dynasty will have to go on without Shewman. Shewman, who led the Squires to their first regional title and first semistate appearance in 1998, resigned at Tuesday's school board meeting.Shewman will no longer teach phys ed or coach girls basketball or girls golf at Manchester. The board voted 6-0 to accept the resignation. Shewman coached Manchester's varsity team the last two years, guiding them to a 35-10 record.They went 14-6 two years ago and followed that with a 21-4 record last season.The Squires won their first sectional title since 1984 this past season.They then beat Lewis Cass in the regional to advance to the semistate, where they beat Bishop Luers in the first game.They lost to Bluffton 55-49 in the championship game of the Logansport 2A Semistate.

Libertarians Encouraged By Tuesday's Results

It's been said that perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds is a mark of character. If that is true, the Libertarian candidates in the county, in the state - in the nation - have a lot of character. In Tuesday's elections, Libertarian candidates generally found themselves finishing a distant third to the candidates of the Democratic and Republican parties.With only a few notable exceptions, most Libertarian candidates garnered less than 5 percent of the vote. Locally, some of those exceptions included Michael Houze, of Syracuse, who received 14 percent of the vote in the county council District 1 race.Daniel Stevens, of Warsaw received 12 percent in the county council District 3 race.

Federal, State Officials Probe Sewage Plant

Federal and state investigators converged upon the Warsaw wastewater treatment facility Thursday, arriving soon after the work day began, presenting an all-encompassing search warrant. Officials from the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency went through "various" records, according to public works superintendent Lacy Francis Jr. Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation officers guarded the entrance of the building. "It's kind of a mystery," Francis said Thursday as to what the officials were seeking."The warrant says they have a right to come in and look.They'll give us a list of what they take and send us a report in 30 days." The investigation could be tied to this summer's fish kill in Walnut Creek, caused by toxins discharged into the waterway from the treatment facility.

BOURBON - Vere H. Stiver, 86, of Sunset Drive, Bourbon, died at 2:08 a.m. April 30, 2008, in Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne. He was in failing health.
