Rating System Made Television More Adult

Several years ago the television industry, under pressure, decided the best way to deal with the concerns certain groups had with television programming was to implement a ratings system. The U.S.government was going to implement their own ratings system if the television industry didn't, but the television industry stepped in and said they would do it themselves to avoid the interference. Now, depending on which network or Cable Channel one watches, television shows have ratings like Y7, Y14, M, PG, A, etc.And which television show gets which rating depends mostly on what an individual at the network thinks it deserves.A show that gets a Y14 (not intended for anyone under 14) on one network might get an M (for mature) on another. Certain networks add additional letters to clarify their ratings. There's V for violence, S for sexual situations, L for language and a couple others I haven't been able to decipher yet.

Wawasee Girls Outlast Lakeland

SYRACUSE -ÊDespite 12 first-quarter turnovers and 30 percent shooting from the field, Wawasee was able to lock visiting Lakeland down defensively en route to a 40-33 win in girls basketball Tuesday night. The Warriors got off to a slow start as they telegraphed passes and Lakeland's Abby Neff stepped in to the passing lanes four times to score six first-quarter points as the Lakers jumped out to a 12-5 lead after one period. Wawasee ratcheted up its defensive pressure to outscore Lakeland 11-3 in the second quarter. The Lakers didn't make a field goal until 1:53 left in the half when Sammy Jo Simon nailed a jumper to tie the game at 15-15. The Warriors entered the half with a one-point lead at 16-15 after junior Jessie Wolf hit one of two free throws. Both teams played fairly even in the third quarter as both teams struggled with their touch from the floor. Wawasee showed how potentially deep it could be with five different players scoring in the third quarter.

Juniors Ready To Lead Triton Trojans

BOURBON - In middle school, they had a lot of success together. Once high school started, some of this year's juniors on the Triton boys basketball team played freshmen ball while a couple of otherS played junior varsity and a select few made the varsity squad. Now they're reunited and ready to earn some wins for the Trojans. Triton will be led by the one-two punch of Troy McIntyre and Jake Everett. Both have been contributing for the Trojans since they were freshmen and both are being looked upon to step up. "(Jake Everett) has grown a little bit and filled out," said Triton coach Jason Groves."He's a smart player and worked hard over the summer. He was second on our team in rebounding last year.(Troy) McIntyre did a little bit of everything for us last year." Sluggish Vikings Win Home Opener

AKRON - It seems as if the holiday season comes sooner every year. It's not even Thanksgiving yet, but the Valley girls basketball team nearly handed Wabash an early Christmas present. The Vikings struggled from the field and with turnovers but prevailed in their home opener, 57-48. With 1:35 left in the game, Wabash drew to within 51-41 after trailing by as many as 17 points in the second half. Two consecutive steals by Kandi Brandt yielded just one free throw for the Apaches to make the score 51-42. After Brandt's second steal, she dished to forward Amy Dawes, who appeared to have an open jumper before Valley's Heather Rathbun came up and blocked the shot. Two Chelsy Rhoades free throws pushed the Vikings' lead to 53-42.

Hungry Warriors One Game Away

SYRACUSE - Every Thursday during the football season, Wawasee's Gridiron Club, a group of parents and supporters, attempt the impossible - to feed the Warriors' entire 90-plus man roster including coaches and their families. The goal is to build greater team unity off the field. On the field, Wawasee has had little trouble with the concept of team unity.Whether it is the ground game of Jordan Swain, the air attack of Kory Lantz or the defense stepping up, this team has found a way to win. Tonight's contest against Logansport (11-2) will decide the northern representative in the 4A state final at the RCA Dome. The last time the Warriors were in Indianapolis was in week five for the NLC's Day at the Dome. Since that game, where Wawasee beat NorthWood 38-34, the Warriors have been on the warpath. Wawasee's margin of victory since that game has been an average of 21 points per contest.

Injuries Pile Up On Valley Football Team

NORTH MANCHESTER - The Manchester Squires capitalized on an injured Tippecanoe Valley football team's mistakes to win their first Three Rivers Conference game of the season 27-9. With quarter back Brandon Eaton and several other players out with injuries, the Vikings had obstacles to overcome internally before they even stepped on the field against Manchester. The Valley squad then increased its lead to 9-0 after recovering a Manchester fumble in the endzone with 2:19 remaining in the first quarter.

One Hill Of A Play For Warsaw

It wasn't the typical guys Friday night that gave Warsaw a 19-7 victory over Northridge in a Northern Lakes Conference matchup. It wasn't Jose Esquivel, Warsaw's leading rusher on the year. It wasn't Ross Kesler, the team's top receiver. It wasn't even Greg Seiss, the Tigers' quarterback. What it was was Jon Hill, a senior wide receiver playing just his second year of football that turned the game around for the Tigers on a running play. What it also was was a stifling defensive line that turned the dangerous Northridge option attack into nothing more than an 11-man punching bag after allowing 31 points to South Bend St.Joe last weekend.

Warsaw Wins Fourth Straight

MIDDLEBURY - Northridge should have seen the writing on the wall. Starting quarterback Joe Sickels was on the bench after an injury in practice this week.On homecoming night, the Raiders were left with a P.A.system on the rocks until the second quarter. The senior float was driven by someone with a lead foot who almost dropped all the float riders off the back, and the Northridge radio station had a short in one of its wires causing it to go dead about once every two minutes. And then there was the rain. If only Northridge had called it quits and decided that it just wasn't meant to be on Friday night. But the Raiders stepped on the field and were overmatched from the beginning in a 27-0 rout for Warsaw's second shutout of the season.
