County Program Teaches Kids About Justice System

Some students in Warsaw Community Schools may get a deeper look at the law enforcement and justice systems in Kosciusko County as a result of a new program this fall. Starting with fifth-graders at Madison Elementary, the "Courtrooms to Classrooms" program will help youngsters understand how the justice system works, said county prosecutor David Kolbe Tuesday. "This program has the potential of a very significant blend of the justice system and the educational system," he said. Funded by a grant from a corporate trust fund, the nine-week program was developed after Kolbe and an assistant prosecutor, Rob Reneker, attended a conference in Seattle on juvenile justice policy.Reneker will be in charge of coordinating the speakers and developing the curriculum.

Milford Seen As Likely Ethanol Plant Site

MILFORD - Local officials have talked with representatives of a company considering a site for what could be another biofuels plant in Kosciusko County. American Milling Co., of Cahokia, Ill., apparently is interested in several properties just outside Milford, including more than 200 acres owned by Harlan Beer, who said his property was under consideration. Beer's land is east of Old 15 between CRs 1300N and 1350N.There is access to north-south and east-west railway lines. Property owned by Weisser LLC also is involved. It is west of Old 15 beside the north-south railroad. American Milling has not announced plans for an ethanol plant in Indiana.Officials at American Milling did not return calls at press time today. Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission Assistant Planner Matt Sandy said American Milling officials first called, then visited the county planning office about a week and a half ago, asking about zoning requirements.

Cervantes Sentenced

BY GREG BROWN, Times-Union Staff Writer The man who supplied the gun in last year's Leesburg shooting will serve the same term as the man who pulled the trigger. Adan Cervantes, 34, of 3699 N.CR 175E, Warsaw, was sentenced to 10 years, with two years suspended, for his part in the shooting of Ortie Manns, Leesburg.Cervantes was charged with assisting a criminal. Authorities feel his sentencing sends a message to the community about being present when a crime is committed, or even helping in the commission of crime. "It was a very important philosophical debate - to what extent is assistor of the crime culpable for the crime," Kosciusko County Prosecutor David Kolbe said. The court indicated that the culpability is as serious as committing the crime with their sentence of Cervantes, Kolbe said.

Task Force Battles Domestic Violence

Making an organized effort to combat what was called "a blight on our community" was the purpose of the Kosciusko County Domestic Violence Task Force, which met for the first time this morning. Organized as a result of a Kosciusko Leadership Academy white paper by Andrea Halpin and Becky Moreno, the task force's purpose is to provide a way for all areas of the community to coordinate their efforts. For example, law enforcement officers can work with school officials and members of the medical community to help set up screening programs for possible domestic abuse victims. Kosciusko Superior Court James Jarrette told the task force that domestic violence may not be a visible problem in the community, but he believes it is widespread.
