Grace Makes Statement With Big Rally

FORT WAYNE - For the second straight year, Grace's game with Manchester College might have helped define the character of a Lancers' team searching for an identity.Although this year, it might just have been what Grace was looking for. After dropping an 80-49 decision to the Spartans a year ago, the Lancers spiraled downward en route to a 12-20 campaign. This time around, the Lancers showed what they were made of, rallying from a 17-point halftime deficit to nip the Spartans 74-72 Saturday at the Allen County Memorial Coliseum. Although playing better this season with a 10-3 mark entering the game, Grace already had a lifeless 60-48 loss to IPFW on Thursday heading into its annual game with Manchester.

Zolman Makes Hoop History

SYRACUSE - There aren't many things Wawasee junior Shanna Zolman hasn't done on a basketball court.Tuesday night in a 77-55 home win over Kosciusko County opponent Tippecanoe Valley, she did something no girl in Indiana high school basketball history ever has. With 6:51 remaining in the third quarter, Zolman chased down a rebound and let fly with a three-pointer from the left corner. The ball went through without so much as touching the rim, giving the Warriors a 46-23 lead. What it gave Zolman was 2,000 career points. The 5-foot-9 guard became the first girl in state history to eclipse the 2000-point mark prior to their senior season. "I had no idea I was the only junior to do it," Zolman said."It's a great accomplishment, but I'd rather win a state championship." On a night the Class 3A No.2 Warriors upped their record to 18-0, Zolman was the star of the center stage.

Defense, Denny, Drudge Lead Valley Boys

AKRON - A game in which it leaped out to a 16-point lead in the first quarter, Tippecanoe Valley's varsity boys basketball team also took steps toward a team goal and a coaching milestone Saturday. Behind the scoring of senior Shane Denny and junior Shane Drudge and some sticky team defense, the host Vikings raced to a 19-3 lead after one quarter and blasted Three Rivers Conference foe Northfield 56-38 Saturday. Denny and Drudge combined for 35 points on 16-of-21 shooting, but it was the Vikings' first-half defense that seemed to set the tone. The visiting Norsemen scored just three points in the first quarter, all from the free throw line. In the second quarter, they managed to score eight points, but hit just two shots from the floor.

Tiger Girls End Carroll's Home Winning Streak

FORT WAYNE - An atmosphere as electric as Carroll High School's gymnasium Wednesday evening, it was only fitting there be a lightning bolt painted at mid-court. A battle of Class 4A heavyweights No.3 Warsaw and No.9 Carroll was quite possibly everything a fan could have hoped for, a nip-and-tuck, back-and-forth battle that went down to the wire. And like so many times before, Warsaw Miss Basketball candidate Jaclyn Leininger came through when her team needed her, scoring eight of her team's 12 fourth-quarter points and leading the Tigers to a 62-53 win over the previously unbeaten Chargers.

Lady Vikings Too Much For Northfield

AKRON – It could be said Tippecanoe Valley’s Lady Vikings turned Northfield inside out Tuesday night. Junior Meredith Brouyette and sophomore Addy Miller combined to hit 10 three-point shots and scored 32 points between them, then junior Anne Secrest added 28 points on 11-of-11 shooting to down the Lady Norsemen 66-38.At the 3:01 mark of the second quarter, Secrest eclipsed the 1,000-point threshold for her career, scoring off a rebound and stickback and getting fouled on the play.
