Power Surge Destroys Sewage Billing Computers

Sewage customers in Warsaw won't receive February billings at the regular time, according to sewage collection manager Jane Edmond. A NIPSCO transformer on the property "blew" Friday afternoon, cutting power to the Sewage Collection Office, the planning and building office, the wastewater treatment plant and the street department building. There are three power transformers on the city property.Three new transformers were installed by NIPSCO crews Friday night. The surge destroyed information on the sewage collection's 10 billing computers.While backup records are continuously kept, February billings will be delayed.Late payments will not be assessed a penalty. Edmond, who is retiring after 24 years of employment, said it just figures everything would crash during her last week.

10 Years Ago October 23 1999 John Montgomery, Warsaw, has taken a personal interest in Miller's Merry Manor's plans to add two aviaries to their facilities. The employees at Miller's took care of Montgomery's wife for four years when he no long could. In August, Hilda Montgomery died from Alzheimer's disease. He said he wants to give back to Miller's and to the patients who may be in a situation similar to his wife's and help with getting an aviary. 25 Years Ago October 23 1984 Kosciusko County Retired Teacher's association held their October meeting at the Shrine Building with 105 members and guests attending the luncheon. Program chairman Arlene Miner introduced Richard Rooker from the English department of the Warsaw Middle School who presented an interesting narrated slide production of his cross country bicycle trip in 1981 from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic. President Virginia Ditmer of Syracuse had charge of the business meeting. The secretary's report was given by Betty Kaye-Smith, Winona Lake. 50 Years Ago October 23 1959 The Spring Creek Church o f the Brethren will start its annual "Apple Butter Bee" next week. This project has been carried on for a number of years and has grown from about 25 gallons to more than 1,000 gallons of finished apple butter, most of which is sold locally and in surrounding communities. However, quite a lot goes to other states. 75 Years Ago October 23 1934 J. Gifford Menzie of Warsaw was elected president of the Choral society, largest music group at Ball State college, at a meeting held on the campus this week. Mr. Menzie, who will have one of the more prominent parts in the cantata, has been active in campus music circles during the past three years. He is a member of the junior class and was graduated from the Warsaw high school in 1927.

Walgreens Site Plan Approved

With the entrances and exits changed on paper, the preliminary site plan for Walgreens was approved Wednesday by the Warsaw Plan Commission. The design shows an entrance with a right-turn-only for southbound Argonne Road traffic.There is no exit onto Argonne.Two weeks ago this was both an entrance and an exit, with traffic able to turn both ways onto Argonne. A new ingress/egress is shown on Market Street, 117 feet west of Argonne Road. Attorney Steve Snyder, representing the developers, said delivery trucks would enter Argonne from Center Street, unload at the back of the 14,560-square-foot Walgreens building and proceed west to Roosevelt Street.At Roosevelt, they are to turn right and return to Center Street. The changes to the traffic patterns were part of the plan commissioners' conditions set at the June 9 meeting.

Elliott Says He'll Miss The People At Zimmer

Ray Elliott announced Monday he plans to retire as president and chief executive officer of Zimmer in the first half of next year.He will remain as chairman of the board at least until November 2007. Elliott said, "I've put 30 years into running companies - 25 years as president, with the last nine years at Zimmer.This is a 100-hour-a-week job, and there are other things I'd like to do." Elliott joined Zimmer as president in 1997, when it was still owned by Bristol-Myers Squibb.He headed the company when it went public in 2001 and through the acquisition of Centerpulse, which made Zimmer the largest orthopedic company in the world.

JMISC Commander Relinquishes Command, Retires From Active Duty

MACDILL AFB, TAMPA, Fla. - The Joint Military Information Support Command, a subordinate Joint command of U.S. Special Operations Command, bid a fond farewell to Army Col. Jack N. Summe and welcomed his successor, Army Col. Dorothea M. Burke, in a ceremony at the MacDill Air Force Base's Davis Conference Center Sept. 3.

German Artillery Officer Surrendered To Smith

Editor's note: This is part of a series of interviews with World War II veterans.The articles will continue in each day's edition until May 28, prior to the World War II Memorial Dedication and Recognition Day, May 29. In November 1999, Albert Guy Smith recounted for the Times-Union actions that led to his being decorated with two Bronze Stars in World War II. Bronze Stars are awarded for heroic and meritorious achievement of service, not involving aerial flight, in connection with operations against an opposing armed force. Smith was a bazooka man for the Army's 255th Infantry Regiment, A Company, (the Blood and Fire regiment) of the 63rd Infantry Division, Seventh Army.
