And that, in a nutshell, is what is probably most troubling to me about the whole Monica Lewinsky affair. I wrote a couple weeks ago how I thought Bill Clinton has set us back morally as a country. He basically has shown us that you can lie and cheat your way to the top with little or no reprisal. Take a look at the polls. The president's approval rating stays high, even though most people say they don't trust him.

Grocer Seeks Zoning In Syracuse

Marsh is looking to build an Arthur's Fresh Market in Syracuse at 707 S.Huntington St., formerly the Wawasee Motel and an old laundromat. According to information provided Tuesday by Matt Sandy, Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission assistant planner, the company filed a petition June 9 to rezone a piece of property behind the motel from its current designation of industrial II to commercial. The back property was owned by Syracuse Rubber and was zoned industrial II though it remained vacant, according to attorney Steve Snyder, who is representing Marsh in the matter.The front portion, where the hotel and laundromat are, already is zoned commercial.The plan commission was set to hear the rezoning today at 1 p.m. The plan commission then will send its recommendation to the Syracuse Town Council, which will hear it July 15 at its town council meeting.On rezonings, the plan commission is only a recommending body.

Dr.Paul Grossnickle celebrates his 75th birthday Tuesday. Nothing out of the ordinary about a birthday, but 1999 marks two other anniversaries for Grossnickle.In September, he will celebrate 55 years of marriage to his wife, Jane, and 50 years in practice as an optometrist. What's the secret to his longevity? "I think Jane and I have been very fortunate.We're compatible.We have spats, but everyone does," Paul said."As far as work is concerned, I got into a field I thoroughly enjoy." Jane said, "I don't think there's any secret.I have no magic words or secret." The youngest of seven children, Paul was born June 22, 1924, in North Manchester.He has five older brothers and graduated from North Manchester High School in 1942.A year later, he enlisted in the Naval Air Corps at age 18. "My dad told me and my older two brothers we'd have to go to war and we did," he said.

Adams Cuts Treasurer's Office Staff

To save Kosciusko County money, county treasurer Kent Adams reduced the staff in the treasurer's office from 6-1/2 full-time-equivalent positions to 4-1/2. "The office is moving along well now," said Adams Monday."We've got a good staff and we're working hard." Coming into the county treasurer's office, Adams said, he had 20 years of finance experience.At Goshen Schools from 1972-1985, he handled finances.From 1985 to 1988, he was at School City Mishawaka.In 1988, he ran for the Indiana General Assembly, won, and took a position at Warsaw Schools as the director of finance. By 1990, he had 31 years in public schools so he retired, taking a job in the private sector in finance at Dalton Corp.He worked there from 1990 to 2002.He also was a school building principal in 1963 and was a trooper with the Indiana State Police.

New Red Cross Director Focuses On Education

After 35 years in the telecommunication business - 25 years of that with Sprint - Larry Peppel, 59, decided he wanted to do something different. He wanted to give back to the community. In mid-March, he was hired as the new executive director of the Kosciusko County chapter of the American Red Cross. He came to Indiana at the end of 1996 to serve in customer relations for Sprint for the southwest Ohio and Indiana area.He's lived in Warsaw since.At the end of 2001, he retired from the business. "I came to a point in my life where I decided to do something different," he said Thursday. Always having enjoyed helping people and wanting to work for the community, he decided to go for the Red Cross position when it became available after Becky Notestine left.
