Warsaw Wrestlers Suffer Third NLC Loss

Warsaw's wrestling team hosted Goshen Wednesday evening and suffered a third Northern Lakes Conference loss, falling 45-27. The Tigers won half the battles on the mat, but it was not enough as they were still out-pointed 33-27 before handing over two forfeits. "We certainly did better tonight, I thought we battled a little better and at least we fought," said Warsaw head coach Tony Boley, recalling Tuesday's loss at NLC foe Northridge."Tuesday we were so flat, but we were more aggressive this evening." Boley went on to note the need for improvement from the down position, saying, "We just were not moving." The Tigers also have a number of underclassmen wrestling on the varsity team. "We have quite a few freshmen who have been thrown into the varsity level," said Boley. Three of the six freshmen suffered losses. Steven Palladino (112 pounds) was pinned by Goshen's Zac Bechtel, a junior, in 2:35.

2006 Will Be An Intriguing Election Year

The 2006 election should be quite interesting. The Democrats are chomping at the bit. They believe - and they may be right - that W has made the Republicans vulnerable. W's popularity is falling.Support for the war in Iraq is dwindling and the economy, while still strong, is being threatened by rising gas prices. There is an outfit in Washington, D.C.called Democracy Corps. It boasts members such as notable liberal political strategists as James Carville, Stanley Greenberg, Karl Angle and Robert Shrum. Basically, the group conducts surveys to get a feel for what Americans are thinking. They're looking for ideas and issues that they can use to get more Democrats elected.

Let's Hope Recount Is Quick, Accurate

I get the sense that it's going to be a long time before we know who our next president will be. And I think what the Democrats are trying to pull in Florida is a travesty. If you think the Democrats are going to simply abide by the results of a recount, you're out of your mind. Abiding by the results of the recount would be the honorable thing to do. The state of Florida, by law, should recount every vote properly cast in Tuesday's election - absentee or otherwise. They should take all steps necessary to ensure that the vote count is as accurate as humanly possible. After that, they should certify the results and name the winner. If Gore has more votes, Gore gets the 25 electoral votes he needs to win the presidency. If Bush has more votes, Bush gets the 25 electoral votes he needs to win the presidency. Then Gore, or Bush as the case may be, should congratulate his opponent and life should go on.

Disposition Of Murder Case Disappointing

There were various levels of disappointment for me in the case of the murder of Kathy Vroman. First of all, I was upset that someone was murdered in Milford.I suppose there is a certain level of naivet that goes with living in a small town like Milford. You know, the "it can't happen here syndrome."But that is precisely why most people choose to live in a small town. I could have worked in a bigger town at a bigger newspaper.Actually, I had that opportunity. But I wanted to live in a small town because I think it's safer and more neighborly and a better place to raise kids. So it was pretty upsetting to hear that a woman in Milford was shot a couple times in the head, transported to Michigan and dumped in the snow. Bad enough as the murder was, even more disappointing to me was the adjudication of the case. It's no joke. It's no clich. In Kosciusko County, somebody got away with murder.

Vikings Survive In Rochester 76-74

ROCHESTER -ÊFire alarms must have been going off all over Rochester when Tippecanoe Valley and Rochester met in a four-alarm overtime barn burner Friday night. Fortunately for Valley's boys basketball team, it finished hotter than the Zebras and earned a 76-74 Three Rivers Conference win. After the Vikings (9-2, 3-0 TRC) and Zebras (3-6, 1-2 TRC) played to a 64-64 stalemate in regulation, Josh Lett capitalized on a steal by B.J.Swank, and then Nick Patterson hit a basket to put the Zebras up by four, 68-64, making Valley fans more than a little nervous. However, one slick play by Cody New erased that lead and put the fans at ease.New hit a three-point basket and was fouled with 2:13 left in the overtime period. After New sank the free throw, the score was knotted at 68-68.

Glenn Knocks Off Triton

Editor's note: Because of a computer problem, this story did not run Saturday. WALKERTON - As Triton fans looked down at the tipoff, they had one thing on their mind: this game was a much-needed game to win.But the Triton fans didn't get their wish as the Trojans fell to Northern State Conference rival Glenn 55-53 in overtime Friday. "We weren't off to a promissing start at the beginning of the game," Triton coach Kevin O'Rourke said."Our team had a big opportunity going into this game, but we let it slip by." Midway into the first quarter, Glenn pulled out ahead leading 11-2 with nine points made by Mike Alexander and Corey Rough. The Trojans came back with Austin Unterbrink scoring six out of his total 18 points in the first quarter. "Austin did his job and that is to score points," O'Rourke said.

Foresters Chop Down Grace

WINONA LAKE - Grace College's women's basketball hosted and fell to Huntington College Wednesday. The two teams were tied at 32 at halftime before Huntington won 69-64. Grace fell to 3-13 overall and 0-3 in the MCC, while Huntington improved to 7-7 overall and 3-0 in the MCC. Huntington senior forward Amy Bechtel, of Goshen, hit 7 of 12 field goals and 10 of 12 free throws to lead all scorers with 25 points. Grace outrebounded Huntington 38-26, and both teams hit 21 field goals. The Foresters had a slight edge in points off turnovers, 21-18. Where Huntington won the game was at the free throw line.Huntington hit 16 of 20 free throws (80 percent) in the second half, while Grace hit 7 of 12 (58 percent). Amilia Devros led the Lancers in the scoring column with 18.Amy Doron and Tracey Mantegna added 15 and 12, respectively.

A Good Golf Game Is All In The Mind

My son plays golf for Wawasee, so I've spent a great deal of time the past four years watching teenagers play golf. These kids are really good at golf. Just this week, they won the regional at Fort Wayne and get to play for the state championship next week. I would like to congratulate them for the accomplishment. It's really pretty cool. I also would like to congratulate the Warsaw golf team on a fine season. One of Warsaw's golfers, Chris Hanson, advanced to the state tournament as an individual. Stephen Conrad, of Wawasee, was medalist at the regional and will vie for individual state honors as a member of the Warrior team. Actually, Warsaw outshot Wawasee three out of five times they played each other this season. But the Tigers came up a short in the regional, ending up in fourth place, while Wawasee set a tournament record to take first place. The first three teams advance to state.

Warsaw Ends Wawasee's Reign

To be safe, Eric Mohler took his wallet out of his pocket. Mohler, Warsaw's girls swim coach, thought his team would beat Wawasee in Tuesday's meet.Because he thought Warsaw would win, he also thought he would end up in the pool. As Mohler predicted, Warsaw won.As Mohler figured, he ended up in the pool. The girls tossed him in not so much to celebrate the 106-79 win as to celebrate the end of Wawasee's dominance.Warsaw improved to 8-3 overall and 3-2 in the NLC, while Wawasee dropped to 6-5 overall and 1-4 in the NLC. "Well, when you have 20-some girls tugging at you," a sopping wet Mohler said, explaining how he managed to end up in the water."I've been coaching here five years, and we had never beaten Wawasee.Warsaw may have beaten them in the early '90s.

Economic Development Is A Plus

Kosciusko Development Inc.has been going around giving talks about the need for economic development. They have put together a package to show just how important economic development is. Warsaw (and Kosciusko County by association) have been very fortunate to achieve the status of orthopedic capital of the world. Let's be honest. Those industries drive the local economy. And those industries are fairly recession-proof.If someone needs a new joint implanted, they don't put it off. They don't shop around. They just get it done because they're not paying for it, the insurance company is. I think sometimes because we have this very brisk and vibrant orthopedic thing happening here, economic development isn't always on our front burner. But it really should be, because economic development is on the front burner in every surrounding county.

W's Hawkish Policy Raises Concerns

It is really difficult for me, generally a supporter of W, to discuss some of his administration's policies without squirming in my chair. And now with the North Koreans plumbing their mothballed reactor with fresh nuclear rods and throwing out the international inspectors, it's getting even worse. It's like a return to the Cold War or something. Not exactly what the world needs right now. But I know why North Korea is doing that. They're playing a little one-upmanship game with us because of the whole Iraq situation. And they're probably not really fond of the recently approved Missile Defense System, either. Not to mention our research into Robust Nuclear Earth Penetrator missiles. And then Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld tells the world that the U.S.is perfectly capable of carrying on a war against Iraq and North Korea at the same time if need be.

Injured Warsaw Wrestlers Fall At Bellmont

DECATUR -ÊWarsaw's Tiger grapplers could not find a win in four meets at the Bellmont Invitational on Saturday.Beset with illness and injury, the team ended the day with four more losses, including a Northern Lakes Conference loss to Northridge, 67-10. Warsaw also lost 65-6 to Mishawaka, which boasts five ranked wrestlers.Against Bellmont, the Tigers matched up for three wins against the Braves in the 58-13 loss. Bellmont has seven wrestlers ranked. In a 56-18 loss to Penn, the Tigers recorded three wins again, along with a forfeit.A point was deducted from Penn's team scored for unsportsmanlike conduct by a member of the coaching staff. Through the entire day, the Tigers could only collect nine individual wins along with one forfeit. Eight Tiger wrestlers went through the entire competition without a single win, while just four of the Tigers earned the few victories.

Winona Amends Deer Hunt Ordinance

WINONA LAKE - Deer hunters now will be allowed to hunt in town limits in tree stands in Winona Lake. The Winona Town Council approved an amendment Tuesday to an ordinance the council passed in October 2005 stating a limitation on bows, arrows and slingshots in the town. The council voted in support of amending the ordinance to allow hunters to hunt from a tree stand with a minimum height of 12 feet according to state guidelines for deer season. The hunt must be permitted by the landowner and the hunter is not allowed to discharge a bow and arrow from the ground. The ordinance previously stated it was unlawful to discharge or cause to be propelled any arrow or other missile from a bow or slingshot, except at a practice target designed so as to prevent the ricochet or exit through such target of any such arrow or other missile.

Supply-Side Might Work

I'm glad to see Bob Dole picked Jack Kemp as his running mate. I would say I'm surprised, but hey, this is politics, so the hypocrisy just flows and flows. It was not too awful long ago that Bob Dole was joking about how a busload of supply-siders (Kemp) going over a cliff was a good news, bad news situation.Good news that it was going over the cliff.Bad news that a few seats were empty. But now Dole has happily embraced the supply-side theory of economics and has chosen one of its champions (Kemp) as his running mate. And to top it off, Dole has proposed a giant tax cut as the hingepin of his economic revitalization plan - a classic supply-side tactic. So there you have it, a giant supply-side waffle smothered in tax-cut syrup. And you thought President Clinton was a classic flip-flopper. Frankly, I'm glad Dole waffled.I like supply-side stuff.I think it can work. And so does Kemp.

Erickson Scores 33 In Win

Many basketball teams have their "go-to guy" to score, rebound, steal and spark team spirit. For the Kosciusko County Homeschool Eagles Tuesday, that guy was Jon Erickson. Erickson scored 33 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and grabbed five steals as the Eagles defeated the Lakeland Christian Academy Cougars 71-58. Eighteen of Erickson's 33 points came on free throws, and nine of those came in the final quarter of play. KCHE jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first two minutes of play, but the Cougars tied the score when Tim Buckholz netted a three-pointer with 5:20 on the clock. LCA then built a 12-7 lead until Erickson scored eight consecutive points in the last 1:02 of the quarter to give KCHE a 15-12 lead going into the second frame.

Liberals Look Down On Conservatives

Utilitarian philosopher John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) once said, "I never meant to say that the Conservatives are generally stupid.I meant to say that stupid people are generally Conservative." Apparently, 150 years later, that sentiment is stronger than ever. A casual glance at Web logs all across the World Wide Web shows the level of angst and disdain liberals have for conservatives.I realize, of course, that when there is a contentious election, one side or the other is going to be a little miffed at the results. But I have seen generally calm, fun-loving people become fairly emotional over W's re-election.

Red Cross says need for blood donations is great this year

Every two seconds, someone needs blood. But only 5 percent of eligible donors give blood despite the fact that by age 72, 97 percent of us will have needed blood, according to statistics provided by the American Red Cross. Thursday, I trekked to Center Lake Pavilion to give a pint of blood at the Red Cross blood drive. It's been about two or three years since I gave last, when I lived in Indianapolis. And while it's important to give blood every year, this winter the need is especially great. Becky Notestine, Red Cross executive director, told me a few of the reasons why it's important to give. She said that partly because of the weather, not all regular donors can make it out to give, so the supply is rather low.And with many weather-related accidents, it's important to have blood in reserve.

Columnists Take 9/11 Too Far

A couple columns that ran in the Times-Union caught my eye. I guess I couldn't have disagreed with them any more than I did. Frankly, they had me scratching my head. A little background. My wife and I went to see that "Spider-Man" movie when it came out. I liked it. It was a classic comic- book superhero story with some really cool special effects and modern techno gadgetry. It had a decent plot - a tender love story - and it wasn't rife with vulgarity or gratuitous sex. We both left the theater feeling entertained and upbeat. Along comes a column by Washington Post columnist David Broder.

Sometimes Intervention Is Necessary

Since last spring, Diana Welker has been concerned about her friend, Lucille Conrady. Apparently, her concern was not misguided. Conrady is in her 80s.She lives on an EMS lane off of Backwater Road, North Webster. There are conflicting reports on whether her home has running water. Some say there is a hose hooked up.Others say the hose is frozen. This week, Conrady is a patient in Kosciusko Community Hospital, where she is listed in "stable" condition. Emergency medical service personnel removed her from her home the day after Christmas. She was underweight and suffering from dehydration. Conrady received intravenous fluids and a hospital spokesman says discharge planners will discuss options for Conrady when she is well enough to leave the hospital.Case managers will look at the best options for her placement, whether that's a nursing home, assisted living or other arrangement.

School Debate Needs To Be Clear, Open

I've been reading about the Warsaw Community Schools building/redistricting stuff in the newspaper. I think it's too bad that a number of WCS patrons seem to have lost faith in the school board's ability to make decisions regarding the education of their kids. I also wonder how big a number of patrons have actually lost faith.I wonder if it is just patrons around Silver Lake, Claypool and Atwood, where the school board is proposing to close schools, or if people outside those areas have raised eyebrows. It's always difficult and unpopular to close schools, and the school board is charged with making difficult decisions. I understand that. But I think the school board might have been able to smooth things over with the public a little better than they did. In July 2002 finance manager Rande Thorpe said the school corporation was facing a deficit and that "reductions in staff and programs are not just possible but likely" unless new revenue is received.
