Buyer Says GOP Forced Budget, Other Issues

Republicans should hold their heads high and be proud of what their party has accomplished. That was the message Rep.Steve Buyer (R-Dist.5) gave the county GOP at their annual Lincoln Day dinner Thursday. Citing the leadership the Republican party has provided since retaking control of the U.S.Congress in 1995, Buyer said Republican ideals of small, more efficient, less intrusive government were put into practice and resulted in the current budget surplus. "While the president may want to try and take responsibility for the current fiscal surplus, it was we Republicans who held his feet to the fire - even forcing a government shutdown to get sound budgetary practices in place," he said.

During two town meetings, held at Warsaw Community Public Library and Syracuse Town Hall, Roemer also listened to questions from area residents. Warsaw residents were concerned about the status of Social Security.Roemer responded by telling them that it was soluble until 2029 but something still needs to be done to ensure that younger generations will be able to benefit from the program. He said Social Security should not be used as a retirement plan but, instead, be used to complement such plans as the 401K and pension plans. He has also voted for bills that would limit Social Security benefits for those who abuse drugs and alcohol. The Syracuse crowd, which included several high school students, was concerned about public education and Roemer's view on the space station.

The proposed "Countywide Safe School Commission" is a response to a recent state law allowing counties to establish commissions that will study and make recommendations on improving school security. Indiana law also requires every Indiana school corporation to designate a school safety specialist, and those officers are included on the countywide commission. After Thursday's discussion, commission members seemed most interested in pursuing two lines of inquiry: the safety and security of school buildings and facilities, and preventing problems and crises through educational alternatives.
