Manchester Struggles With Reconfiguration Of Schools

NORTH MANCHESTER - Concerned parents and taxpayers at the school board meeting Tuesday scrutinized the board members about the "primary" intention of the controversial reconfiguration issue. Educational benefits are "the primary objective of the board" in reviewing reconfiguration, school board member Thom Frantz said. "Is that true?" Pam Higgins asked the board."I thought it was for financial reasons."The audience of nearly 65 people agreed with applause. Financially, "we are in a heap of trouble," acting superintendent Kim Thurston said about the corporation. The school board has taken actions "that eased the financial pressure," he said. Seven elementary school teacher positions were cut in April.Now the focal point of the reorganization is educational benefits. Amy Lybarger, a parent, said cutting seven teachers hurt educational benefits.

Mobile Data Systems Installed In KCSD Cars

When it comes to technology, the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department likes to be on the cutting edge. Mobile data systems have been installed in all Kosciusko County Sheriff's patrol cars, and once all the technology is in place, they will be the first in the state with capabilities to access both state and local records from the vehicles.The systems could be running completely by Friday. "We could be running (all the programs) today," said Kosciusko County Sheriff Aaron Rovenstine."We want access to both state and local information.We are just waiting for the technology to be in place.The last steps are being put in place now." Kosciusko's cars have all the technology and capabilities to run both the state and local information access programs, but the state is in the final phases of installing the software needed to send certain information directly to officers in their patrol vehicles.

CCS Addresses Homelessness With Planned Facility

Combined Community Services received a zoning variance July 22 to create a group transitional home on Center Street. "It's not a done deal, though," said Jim Coons, director of the charity."People have been calling us and asking when people are going to move in and how they can help.All we have so far is the variance." And a dream to provide a place for homeless families to get back on their feet. CCS has applied for an Indiana Housing Finance Authority grant to purchase the vacant Extendacare Nursing Home building at 2404 E.Prairie St., in Warsaw. If approved, the state grant will bring in $400,000.Awards will be announced Sept.26. Applications have been registered with local foundations, too. Coons said the buyers are anxious to sell, although the CCS board has not yet voted to buy the building.The board will meet Aug.15. If all goes well, the shelter can be ready for occupancy by Nov.1.
