ML Motorsports 2nd, 8th In Double-Race Weekend

DUQUOIN, IL - While much of the work force everywhere enjoyed Labor Day weekend with some time off from work, 25-year-old stock car driver Jason Jarrett and the Warsaw-based ML Motorsports crew pulled a double shift. Their hard work payed off, finishing second Saturday at the new Chicagoland Speedway and eighth Monday at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. Known as the most versatile stock car series in the world, the ARCA RE/MAX Series was versatile this weekend. Saturday, Jarrett and company raced on a new 1.5-mile speedway in Joliet.Monday, on the 35th birthday of Kimmie Miller VanSessen, daughter of team owner Mary Louise Miller, the ML Motorsports crew ran on a 1-mile dirt track against NASCAR Winston cup stars Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader and Winston Cup owner Andy Petree. For Jarrett, Saturday's race at Chicagoland Speedway was almost identical to June 2 at Kansas Speedway.

10 Years Ago February 23 1990 Barb Burdge, a member of the Tippecanoe Valley High School band, has been selected for the second consecutive year to participate in the 1990 All State Honors Concert Band sponsored by the Indiana Bandmasters Association. Burdge, who is directed by Michael Pearson, earned her position by participating in a highly-competitive audition last month at Penn High School, Mishawaka.She was then selected by a committee of bandmasters from a total of more than 400 entries. 25 Years Ago February 23 1975 Bertha Wehrly has been awarded the community's fifth annual citizen of the year award sponsored by the Milford Area Development Council. Her identity was revealed at MAD's dinner banquet held at the M&M Restaurant, North Webster.

'Contributing' Charge Filed In Fatal Crash

A man police say purchased alcohol for minors at a party prior to a traffic accident in which three teens died was charged Thursday with contributing to the delinquency of minors. Bruce Lee Clark, 39, of 9840 N.American Way, Syracuse, was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail at 9 p.m.Thursday after police learned his identity through interviewing other minors who attended the Oct.31 party at the Shepherd residence on South CR 400E, Warsaw.No adult occupants of the residence where the party took place were at home the night of the party, police said. According to the Kosciusko County Sheriff's Department, 20-year-old Josh Church of North Webster drove Clark to Liquid Assets about midnight Oct.31, where he purchased beer with money collected by minors present at the party.Three minors who were celebrating Halloween at that party later died when the car they were in left the roadway and struck several trees in a wooded area off Ind.13, near Pierceton.

Pierceton Revises Handicapped Parking Rules

PIERCETON - A revision of the handicapped parking ordinance will allow police to enforce it, ticketing able-bodied motorists who park in violation. Wording in the ordinance previously on the books didn't allow the Pierceton police to ticket violators.Passage of the revised ordinance Monday by the Pierceton Town Council gives police authority to ticket drivers illegally parked at any public handicapped space. Also, the council approved relocating one of the handicapped spaces in town that was on an incline.Wheelchair-bound people were having trouble negotiating from their vehicles in the space at the community building.It is now on the west side of the building. In other business, the council will review ordinances pertaining to loitering and curfew violations.Marshal George Alexander submitted the proposed ordinances, which are identical to those used in Warsaw.

10 Years Ago The Bistro ‘A Lago ladies bridge group met Oct. 25 with six tables. Winners were Mary Eherenman, Joyce Latta, Mary Derry, Leora Fuller, Margret Stutzman and Mary McCoy. The hostess was Grace Mayer. Thursday winners with five tables were: Mary Derry, Mary Gradle, Mary M. McCoy, Jean Kolar and Jean Pritchard. 25 Years Ago Soccer teams from Madison, Jefferson and Washington schools tied for the Warsaw Elementary Schools soccer championship this season. The teams completed their campaigns last week with identical 4-1 records. Washington forced the three-way tie with a 1-0 win over Madison during the final round of games last week. 50 Years Ago Wilbur Cochran, of Burket, has been named national inspector for the veterans of World War I by National Commander John Bashara Sr. of Norfolk, Va. Cochran has held posts with the organization in the past. The Veterans of World War I claim a total membership of 200,000. 75 Years Ago J.E. Beyer, of Winona Lake, recently left for New York City, where he and Mrs. Beyer will be guests of the former’s son. From there they expect to leave for San Francisco by way of Cuba and the Panama Canal. Miss Ruth Welkar, of Mentone, recently spent time at the Leesburg Conservatory of Music. Miss Welker is visiting over the weekend with her mother, Mrs. E. Mary Welkar.

After spending time in an emergency room at Kosciusko Community Hospital, a Warsaw man stole $7,200 worth of medical equipment.

Darren Heinzman was caught driving a stolen 2001 Dodge pickup Wednesday and was subsequently arrested by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department.

Nappanee Employee Charged with Stealing $2,000 in Tools
