Milford Sewage Project Prompts Rate Hike

milford - Town officials are on the verge of adopting a proposal to revamp the sewage treatment facility within three years. The project would cost about $900,000 and a phased-in sewer rate increase might begin this year and would eventually double from the current level. Town council heard a recommendation Thursday from an engineer proposing the current lagoon system be expanded. The proposal would require adding about three or four more acres to the 10-acre tract where the town operates its lagoon system near CR 1250N. The minimum sewer rate for a residence is about $6 a month.Although the doubling of sewer rates within three years might be startling for some, other communities charge upward of three or four times as much, according to utility superintendent Dallas Winchester.

Reporter becomes part of story

Rappel down a four-story building? Me? Yeah, I did it Sunday when Dynamik Adventures came to town. And now I'd do it again in a heartbeat. It's exciting, fun and scary at first. But once you've done it a few times, it's not that big a deal.I rappelled down the building at 122 S.Buffalo St., Warsaw, about five or six times.I ascended it only one time as it is very tiring. I participated in the full class Eric Bishop and Brant Upchurch, partners of Dynamik Adventures, Lafayette, offered, along with Jason Slone (no relation), Mike Thurston, Staci Trolin and Phillip Swarts.Dynamik Adventures came to Warsaw after former Warsaw City Planner Jeff Noffsinger took one of their classes in Attica and thought it would be great to bring them to town. The building used is co-owned by Noffsinger.

Nonsupport Suspects Rounded Up By Cops

One woman and nine men were arrested in a countywide sweep Wednesday night for nonsupport of dependents. As part of the Kosciusko County prosecutor's war on deadbeat parents, the arrests represented more than $115,000 owed in back child support payments. Twenty-five Class D felony charges of nonsupport were filed against 21 individuals; 10 of those people were located and arrested.Warrants are still outstanding for 11 individuals. The total owed on all 25 charges is in excess of $230,000. Prosecutor David Kolbe earlier this month announced a stepped-up campaign to collect delinquent child support."Parents who refuse to support their kids is unacceptable," he said.

Planners OK Transportation Plan

If Warsaw wants to avail itself of federal transportation grants, it will have to develop a transportation plan. The plan commission took the next step in that process Monday, endorsing a plan completed by the Fort Wayne engineering firm Bonar & Associates. According to Ron Bonar, president, the executive summary of their study identifies six projects the city could pursue that would qualify for federal funding. The top priority project involves renovating a 10-square-block area surrounding the courthouse square. "The top priority, through discussions with the traffic commission, involves the downtown streetscape area," he said. The project has an estimated cost of approximately $3 million and would require $800,000 in local matching funds, Bonar said.

Library Coping With Parking Problems

Several initiatives are under way to help people cope with the lack of parking at Warsaw Community Public Library now that its 64-space parking lot is no longer available. The first signs of the long-awaited expansion project appeared over the weekend when a chain link fence was erected around the parking lot. With the lot cordoned off, library patrons will have to seek out parking opportunities further from the building. That's no small task, considering the lot is used by an estimated 3,600 patrons every week and 36 library employees. Currently, the library has about 10 spaces available north of the building for up to 30 minutes per visit.Another 10 parking spaces north of the old parking lot will become available by early spring. "When we looked at this project, we knew that would be the hardest part," said library director Ann Zydek.

Silver Lake's Town Park Closer To Reality

SILVER LAKE - The town of Silver Lake is a few steps closer to finalizing plans for a town park to occupy the old Marathon Station site. Town council president Brenda Wadkins said last month the town plans to put a gazebo in the old parking lot, adding benches and a brick sidewalk to make the area a "sitting park." "Things are proceeding. We had hoped for Silver Lake Days.I don't think that's going to happen," Town Marshal Craig Hollopeter said Tuesday."We are open for ideas. These are preliminary plans so we really want input. This is the town park." Hollopeter said the town will be selling 4- by 8-inch and 8- by 8-inch bricks to the public to raise money for construction of the new park. The bricks will be engraved with whatever the buyer chooses and placed in the park. Council members discussed reasonable prices with audience members before deciding to sell the smaller bricks for $75 each and the larger bricks for $125 each.
